So...I have a solid briefcase and I want to use it for my laptop.

Any thoughts on what kind of foam/material to line it with?

I'm going to install straps, like you see in luggage or some external HDD cases, but I want some kind of foam/material to protect the laptop (plus, other stuff) from shocks.

If you're installing straps then you might as well just use a laptop sleeve [http://www.bestbuy.com/site/case-logic-laptop-sleeve-black/4817142.p?skuId=4817142&ref=212&loc=1&ksid=64149d57-9de0-4365-adb5-af0f90321642&ksprof_id=8&ksaffcode=pg199034&ksdevice=c&lsft=ref:212,loc:2\]. That or something similar to Pelican's "pick n' pluck" foam, which is a ripoff.

As an alternative to both, you could just buy large sections of egg crate foam and cut them to shape/line your laptop.

But if you think outside the box you could just buy this mattress topper [http://www.target.com/p/room-essentials-comfy-foam-mattress-topper-twin/-/A-13314904?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&CPNG=PLA_Bedding+Shopping&adgroup=Mattress%20Topper_SC&LID=700000001170770pgs&network=g&device=c&location=9011944&gclid=Cj0KEQiA08rBBRDUn4qproqwzYMBEiQAqpzns1toDt327Ff5ZmZ4Ks2E7by6giIRIEGHtUKjG4GSRmAaAkWB8P8HAQ&gclsrc=aw.ds] and get a whole mattress-sized piece for less than $13 US.
