Convince me to buy Skyrim instead of something else.

I've noticed that Skyrim has been receiving the "you must buy or die" stamp by all of those who have played it; and while I am heavily considering it, I've been considering other, cheaper games such as Psychonauts or Just Cause 2 instead.

My question is (with only $60), should I spend my rarely acquired money on Skyrim, or should I spend it on something like Psychonauts (which Yahtzee punished me for not buying)?

You can use the hearts of demons to forge an arsenal of black-as-the-abyss death.

You can hurl fire of such unbridled power that it staggers dragons.

You can send people ass over teakettle into another zip code with a word.

You can make several different kinds of soups, depending on the ingredients you've found.

Ready your wallet.

I recommend Skyrim simply because you can replay it. I've spent 240ish hours in the game, and still climbing. I can't find that in any other game outside of Minecraft, mmorpgs, Fallout, or Elderscrolls. If one can make 60$ stretch over several days of playtime, as opposed to 8-20 hours of play time, it seems to be the more practical decision.

Do you like dungeons?

Yeah, we like dungeons!

Do you like vikings?

Yeah, we like vikings!

Do you like dragons?

Yeah, we like dragons!

Du-dupi-du, can't wait to get a claymore!

...Well, with that poor attempt at song out of the way, I'd say go for it. But on the other hand, Skyrim is new, and you really don't have to be in a hurry to get it. It's not going anywhere soon, so I'd suggest getting the titles you want first, and then pick up Skyrim when it's cheaper. Not to mention more stable and with full modding support.

So, yeah, I'd really advise you to pick it up at some point, but there's no hurry, if you would rather want to get some older games first.

Buy Psychonauts. Psychonauts is easily one of the best games I have ever played (and definitely the most original), and I would recommend it to anyone regardless of their gaming tastes.

I can't tell you which game you would like better, but if you buy Skyrim instead of Psychonauts, you officially have the IQ of a coconut.

Depends. Do you normally like Bethesda's games, even without mods? Then you'd probably enjoy Skyrim, regardless of anything like bad writing or bugs. If not, I'd start with something with more mod support, like Oblivion. That's not even that expensive right now. However, it takes a very specific mindset to properly enjoy a Bethesda game, and since their philosphy is that bugs that are funny enough don't need to be fixed, it's not hard to be jerked out of that mindset...

Psychonauts is definitely good, though.

To be honest, the reason I was kind of slow with buying the game is that I play all genres except RPGs and RTSs most of the time. I have little to no experience, and I wanted to know if the game was good enough to buy even without knowing a single damn thing about the storyline or fantasy RPGs in general.

Sorry about misquoting you earlier, here's my actual response:

Did you just spend time posting on my thread to tell me how much of a waste of time my thread was?

Psychonauts *is* great, but Skyrim has a lot more replayability. If you're really strapped for cash you won't be wasting your money with Psychonauts, otherwise I say grab Skyrim.

You will get lost in your first hour - a vague idea where to go, no idea what you're doing.
You will eventually find your way to civilization, start making friends, and slowly make your way up in the world. Soon enough (2-5 hours in) you will stumble on the main quest, and from then on forward you will have about twenty different stories and threads to follow at any moment.

You will come around bends in the road and be struck by just how beautiful Skyrim can be. You will get caught in a snowstorm with almost no visibility, finally stumbling on some form of shelter. You will make your way deep underground to reclaim ancient treasures. All that in an area comprising approximately 1/50 of the game world, if that.

If any of that sounds appealing, I suggest you buy the game. I'd also suggest you buy it on Amazon ($50.99 right now) and buy Psychonauts as well, if you can. 'Cause while Skyrim is not to be missed, Psychonauts is a marvelous little gem in its own right.

Skyrim, without hesitation. Psychonauts is a classic, sure, but once it's done, it's done. Skyrim offers so many possibilities to explore that it won't be over until you personally decide it is.

Get 2nd Hand copies... You probably could afford both! Psychonauts is only $10 on GoG.com! (Its a shame you didn't ask a couple of weeks ago, it was half price!) so if you find Skyrim for $50, you could get both easily!

I can't wait to get Skyrim myself! I have some time off coming up soon, (Well, 3 montsh time!) so will be bgetting it! :D
