"We take copyright law very seriously and we're actively working with the IOC (International Olympic Committee) to ensure the take-down of infringing Olympic content on the Internet," he said."

So the reason noone could post pictures or videos of an international event dedicated to world peace and harmony is because a broadcasting company wanted to force everyone to drive up its ratings by watching it 10 hours after the fact. Lovely.

And the IOC accused the Iraqis of being corrupt...

By all means congress, keep renewing the DMCA. It's worked out MARVELOUSLY so far.

I'm a firm beliver of "if you're gonna ***** about it, you'd better do something about it." Complaining about it is all good and well, but what will you do about it?

Apologies for poking a hole in that.

Me or him?

It just really gets on my nerves when people complain about things and expect other people to take care of it; write a letter, make a video, go up to IOC hq and bang on the door, demanding to talk to the executives. Just do friggin something besides complaining.

Sorry, but it's one of my pet peeves.

Or inform people of the problem? Nothing starts till people talk about it.

You waited nine hours for the Olympic ceremony. We antipodeans are still waiting for Rock Band. I cannot find it in me to pity those who had to wait an agonising 9 hours to watch something for free that they had no in-built right to watch immediately.

You can dislike something and not have the ability or even the will to stop it. Especially when it may be a pointless waste of time and energy to make an attempt or when the attempt could cause greater problems in ones life then the original problem, does that mean we are suppose to just ignore it and pretend it doesn?t exist?
You're wrong. There's always something you can do, even if it's not pretty.

Every corporation will do anything they can to make money. So, I suggest you start digging so you can get some dirt on them and shut it down if you want to watch the Olympic in a timely fashion.

Not that complaining this year would do you any good at all, as it's being held in China a country in so much trouble that George Bush criticises them for their human rights record! The Olympics is about uniting the world and it is in condemnation of China!

Oh and has anyone noticed the mysterious sound and vision outages whenever anyone criticises the Chinese competitors? Maybe thats just the BBC.

And of course there is the murder thats happened this very day, its very much trying to rival Munich!

It makes me so mad... I'm gonna post a video blog on youtube and write in my livejournal!

That'll show them.

Just an FYI... the IOC HQ is in Switzerland. You're advocating that people fly there (if they live in another country), show up and demand to speak to the executives who a) will not see you and b) would only tell you to write a formal complaint that will never get reviewed by anyone an end up in storage or a landfill?

Come on. Advocating action like that takes extraordinary time and expense. No one takes video blogs seriously because every self-righteous twit with a web cam thinks he's a crusader or a divinely-inspired sage. And btw, everything you're asking people is essentially just complaining, just on a different venue. In case you haven't realized it, this is taking action, just on a smaller scale. He's coming on here, trying to raise a discussion about this and create public awareness. So you're bitching at him for doing exactly what you said to do.

You picked out his most unreasonable suggestion there. He did suggest that you could write a letter. Also, most countries have their own Olympic committees that you could contact. So stop turning his arguments into straw men so you can feel superior and oh-so-cynical.

i dont know if anyone here paintballs here, but a similar thing happened with smart parts ages ago in the paintball industry

They stole a gun design from a developing company, before they could copy right it, made a few tweaks and put it out on the market, then when the original company produced it, smart parts sued them to hell

Of course, I could fly over to the headquarters of whoever decides to be a Copyright douche that week with a gun, and start a 36 hour hostage situation, where the only outcome is me heading off to jail for the rest of my useful life, and maybe getting an hour of press time, until the next politician comes out of the closet, and people completely forget about what happened.

I could also take a non-violent approach, and call them. Though I doubt talking to a machine or an operator making minimum wage will solve anything.

Or I can try to raise awareness about the United State's shit-tastic copyright laws, and bring it up every time we get shafted by them.

Being that I value my life, and pressing 1 for engrish annoys me, I tend to lean towards the third choice most of the time. But I guess to each his own.

Poking a hole in what, exactly? I'll admit, people congratulating themselves without waiting for the reaction has always irritated me, but surely it's not just my prejudice that makes me think that this just doesn't make sense? The OP wasn't trying to make a point, or form an argument, he was putting up some news for discussion. What is there to poke holes in? Yahoo's sports pages? Regurgitating pseudo-philisophical cliches is one thing, but at least give them a little thought, first. Or make sure they're salient, at the very least.

More to the point: assuming they're only taking on sites based in America, it's possible to argue for NBC trying to prevent American viewers from watching the ceremony online. They did buy the rights. Doesn't really change the fact that taking such action will make them hugely unpopular, and has a fairly solid chance of harming their ratings more than a bunch of people already having watched some sports event could, but hey. I'm no professional. Maybe it's more important to NBC to uphold an appearance of mind-blowing greed?

Kinda makes you wish the copyright laws were abolished in 2004, NO!?

*ahem*

Seriously spoken, corporate copyrights have been stuck up our asses too much lately and quite honestly it's starting to hamper the legitimate people's activities. Take Command & Conquer 3, for example. There's this stupid anti-piracy protection on the disc that randomly decided to FAIL after a specific patch for absolutely everyone playing it. Yet pirates crack the protection with no effort. IRONY!?

Another is Viacom and this other company suing YouTube for copyright infringements which they aren't even responsible for! Worse, Viacom intrudes on people's rights to privacy by demanding that YouTube hand over personal info about all of its users. Come on!

My final conclusion is that greed is corrupting modern society a billion zillion times worse than it ever did before, and this is reflected in how NO ONE bothers to be artistic in any way, everything is about the money and all morals have been thrown out the window. Which is also the reason why it has become a trend to assault pirates (blindly misfiring on the innocents as a result) and sue anything with your material on it.
