Stupid question I know

But I cosplay Link (because i'm the only one right?) I've got the tunic, sword, tights and all that stuff, but i'm really struggling to find a pair of boots, being a twenty year old male I know nothing about shoes, is there any particular type of shoe people would recommend? at the minuet the best I have is a pair of Walking trainers :S

You should tie bricks to your socks and wear them. Wallah! Metal boots from Twilight Princess.
I concur, but make them bricks of lead. Large bricks of lead.

Buy a pair of re-enactment boots and alter them. It'll look super awesome.

I'm no expert on mens' shoes, sadly...So I don't know how much help I'll be.
First of all I would check thrift stores and the like, sometimes you can get lucky and find just what you're looking for or something cheap that can be modified without any guilt.

Secondly I would suggest just buying a pair of boots that you'd be comfortable incorporating into your day-to-day wardrobe so you don't feel as bad spending money on them (since you'll wear them more than once).

Unfortunately I can't suggest any specific brands; Doc Marten's and Fluevogs are lovely but they're also expensive and sometimes they can be hard to get a hold of.

A pair of wellies spray painted brown could be an easy and cheap fix. not super realistic but good on a bidget and you could draw on more details

You can always do the boot cover approach where you just put cloth over a pair of shoes. Here's a tutorial for Link's.
Of course how well they turn out all depends on your talent.
