I just saw some children dressed up and pretending to be romanticised Pirates. The real men who terrorised the high seas a few hundred years back were violent dangerous and not at all fun. I can see so many parallels between modern day terrorists and olden-day pirates I wonder if kids will be dressing up like terrorists in a few hundred years.

I'd watch that movie, and then dress up like it at Halloween.

Have you been to Gaza? The martyr tradition is deeply engraved in parts of their society, they have posters and trading cards with the pictures of them.
Gotta catch em all!

I can see the parallels but Pirates seem to know how to have more fun which is why they may be as romanticized as they are. Terrorist are more of religious nuts. And there's nothing fun about that.

Most likely they will take the script from Pirates of the Caribbean, change up the names, and have them fight other terrorist. I can see how that would make money, though I wouldn't use Al-Queda. I would go with Hamas or Hezbola.

Piracy on the high seas was always about stealing cargo for a profit. The romantic and the real pirates were not like terrorists, in of the fact that terrorism is mostly for destructive purposes. If the guys behind the 9/11 stuff were pirates, they'd be all "This plane and all of you now belong to our cause. Prepare to be ransom fodder!". Alot less people would've died, since actual pirates look for profit and gain.

Pirates wanted to steal all your shit, get drunk and sail. Most actually wouldn't kill you if you agreed not to fight back and allow them to steal your shit.

Terrorists want to kill people and blow stuff up. The latter could be fun but they usually blow things up that contain lots of people...yeah.

Look at Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas for the Palestinians, the IRA and even the pre-Israel Jewish terrorist groups. They're politicians and national heroes. Yeah I can draw parallels between them and, say, Sir Francis Drake (a state-sponsored pirate and still a national hero).

So terrorists will be pirates, ninjas will be terrorists, nazis will be ninjas, and pirates will be nazis?

Pirates are the new pirates.

Jeez, haven't you seen everything happening over in african waters with the pirates there? The pirate way of life is still very much alive and kids like Cartman want to grow up to be them.

The problem is there have always been cool stories about particular pirates that kids could idolise. The chances of us liking the stories of misguided fanatics is almost nil. In fact, no one would want to read those stories, as the main character dies at the end.

Pirates weren't just about killing, they were more greedy outlaws like something you might find in the old west in America. Terrorists are nothing like this. Notice that both cowboys and pirates are seen as cool because they step only just outside the law, whereas terrorists just take it 1 bombing too far to be cool.

Their outfits are silly and unwieldy, without a hint of class; their weapons are the ultimate cowards tools, and I show my hypocrasy here as I said I liked explosives in that other thread; their motives are hard to identify with, no loot or plunder except some pipe dream of virgins, kids won't understand what virgins are.

Maybe from the point of view of an islamic/muslim child, they could be pirates, but not for western society.
