Could the Move and new firmware update spell doom for PS3?

For the last year, PS3 has built up quite a bit of momentum, with a lineup of stellar games highlighted by GOW3 and Uncharted 2. However, Move has been deemed by many as a cheap knock-off of the Wii. By comparison, Microsoft's Project Natal has generated a lot of buzz and is being lauded as the next big thing in gaming. In addition, PS3 has slowly been losing features since its release - backwards compatibility, USB slots, and now the ability to run OtherOS - while the XBox 360 and Wii have lost no features at all.

What could this mean for the public perception of the PS3 and Sony? It's possible that the public will see Sony as copycats and corporate bullies who rip off other companies and their own consumers. Meanwhile, MS and Nintendo could bolster their images and viewed as innovators who always bring something fresh and new to the table and always try to improve upon the experience one would have using their products.

What do you think? Are there dark times ahead for Sony?

No, because not a lot of people don't use the "install other OS" option and even less people (who don't have one) know about it. And why would the Move, an optional buy, bring down the PS3? I can't follow that logic.

No. Because the average consumer is too stupid to care about any of these things.

As much as it pains me to say it, 80+ percent of PS3 buyers will neither know nor care what's missing from their PS3. Their knowledge of gmaing and scope of intended use simply won't cover it.

As for image damage, any loss from feature choppping would be made up and then some from the money saved and a few months ofintensive marketing.

Natal will fail too. The reason the Wii does so well is the casual appeal, not the controller, although it probably helps. I just wish they would discontinue Move and make amazing games, but sadly they probably won't.

Alternate personality: This will be my last outing do to negative reception. Goodbye, cruel world. *Puts gun to head*

*Snatches gun away* Will you stop that? I'll still let you talk, we just won't share posts anymore. Sometimes I'll talk, sometimes you will.

screw public perception, I care about what is best for ME!

Public Perception says we should all buy a Wii and play wii-sports with your grandmother.

PS-move seems to be the most refined and advanced motion technology out of the big three (though not as good as mouse aim).

No it will not bring down the ps3. Why would it do that? No motion control system will never exist as more than a gimmick in gaming no matter which form you deliver it in.

You all know its true.

It will be fine, and a lot of Sony's "gain in momentum" came with the cheaper Slim which already didn't allow backwards compatibility or an alternate OS. As to the Move, this is a new and shiny peripheral but also optional so if anything it'll draw some people in.

It'll all be fine.

Hopefully, maybe people will make non DRM PC games after it goes down the pan.

OT I don't think it's a particularly good idea, but I'm an exclusively PC gamer so I now get to say I told you so. ^_^

This and I think the claims of "makes the PS3 less likely to be hacked" a twinkle in the eyes of potential buyers.

Hehe...your concern is cute, but unheeded. If anything, PS3 is the system that will last the longest, for sheer versatility reasons. The number of USB ports hardly changes things, and with the fresh release of the Slim models and price cut, you're still looking at one of the most valuable entertainment centers on the market. Couple in the soon jump of Move's games (if there are a few good titles), and you've got a solid system life.

sony's Move is not a cheap knock off. I believe it works better than the wii, or at least, will work out ofthe box better than the wii's did out of the box.

Anyway, I like the PS3, or atleast, without the features getting stripped off. It'd be great if they added MORE features so it can be the multimedia centerpiece I think it wanted to be. Or at least, I got that impression when it tried to justify its steep price...

LOL I patiently wait for the hacked firmware to appear...You know it is going to happen eventually.

Not to mention a controller that comes with a USB cord to allow easy use with the computer. It makes playing certain games on the computer so much more fun.
They just need to release proper 64bit drivers for the thing. (There is a hacked set but I haven't tried it.)

There is that, too, of course. Though that particular element does tend to escape my mind, it does come back every now and again, usually in an identical such thread...is it from you, bychance?

For sure. I would put a shiny penny down that "Higher security that Xbox 360!" will be marketed on the box of the PS3's. Stupid marketing ploys.

Edit: I went wrong somewhere, too lazy to fix.
