Ok, so I've always wanted to write a book and I have an idea right now I'm wrestling with and was hoping to kick around some thoughts and get some ideas flowing...

What if you took the typical high-fantasy world and fast forwarded it into modern day? What would that look like? What kind of characters would occupy such a world? I have some stuff which I'll post in a little, but I want to see what y'all think first! Thanks for the help

All I can imagine right now is a dragon and giant spider wearing suits and talking in front of a water cooler. In fact, I want to draw that now! I'll be back in a few hours!

Read "The Dresden Files" [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dresden_Files] and you'll get a pretty good idea for how it works (awesomely if you were wondering).

Wizards and vampires and werewolves and spirits and ghosts oh my!

Also, if you become rich writing thanks to this inspiration, can I have a signed copy of your book?

One suggestion I have is look at Pokémon the TV show. Sounds stupid but that is the best example of fantasy in the modern world I can think of. Obviously remove all of the camp, replace the pokémon with other kinds of mythical creatures, and make the world a little darker and more sinister and you could have a good base concept for a story or at least a universe going on.

Low tech, high magical advancements. I think Michelle Sagara did a good job with that sort of modern feel in her Cast series. You want that highly connected world feel I think without the typical "medieval" trappings. Though, really, it depends on how much magic is in your world. If the magic is still low, you'd have more tech. The more magic, probably the more silly technological advancements would become to the mainstream.

As for the characters. . .well, people are people, and their behavior would reflect the society they come from. If you're going with standard Euro-flavor, then well. . .they'd act like how typical Euro-fantasy characters act. The culture though should start out more separate from the present setting (how did they develop? Where are they located? What from their past caused them to act the way they do in their present?).

edit- you said high fantasy, I missed that. So yeah, magic-in-place-of-tech imo, unless magic has waned in recent years. And am I correct in assuming this is a non-RL-earth fantasy setting as typically seen in paranormal/urban fantasy?

It's a genre that has been done plenty of times before, and indeed forms the basis of my own idea for a webcomic (currently looking for an artist if anyone's interested, just PM me for details of the story and so on :D). As has been said, take a look at the Dresden Files for one take on it, also Buffy the Vampire Slayer (yes, it's a TV show, but it's still another unique take on the concept). Not to mention the Artemis Fowl series (more child friendly, but still...) and the Power of Five series. Hope that diverse range of examples gives some help, sorry I can't think of more to add though :p.
