So I was reading some reviews on films that were based on children's cartoons, such as Transformers: The Movie, Yugioh the Movie, Digimon the movie, and a few of the Pokemon movies, and they all seemed to get bad reviews from the critics.

Now why is that? Are they biased against it because they never saw the series themselves, and therefore do not understand the movie itself?

Are there any ones that actually performed well?

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Siskel and Ebert were kinder to it than they were to Batman Forever and Ebert considered it a turning point for animation.

Sadly it bombed at theatres, since it was only released in a couple theatres.

I think you're confusing "bad" with "not objectively meant for adults". Saying you shouldn't watch something doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad. It just means you might not like it. When someone says, "This movie doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence with barrels", that's when you know something is bad.

Oh, and as for "Children's" films critics liked? Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and any of the Muppet movies.

EDIT: Oh damn it, I got Ninja'd.

It's not because they're based on kids cartoons, they're just bad movies. If they think it's a good movie they'll say so.

Because they remove their nostalgia goggles. I re-watched Pokemon the first movie and couldn't stomach to finish it. It was horrible. I've already forgotten about the show (Had a brief one year run with it when I was 11) and I was looking for movies my little brother could watch.

Let's be fair now, all those films were terrible :p

I mean, the Digimon movie was just bits of the three Japanese movies mushed together into this horrible, nonsensical mess. And the DigiRap *shudders*

Well I enjoyed Transformers, and I can't really remember too much of the others.

Is this the '80s animated Transformers? If so, it's a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. It does so many things that I should hate and yet I can't help but enjoy it.

Yeah that one, the only one. There aren't any other Transformers movies. NOPE NOPE NOPE.

But there should have been. A Beast Wars movie would have been cool.

As someone else has said, most films based on kids' cartoons tend to suck, which is why critics review them negatively. Take off your nostalgia goggles and recognize that the first Pokemon movie, as well as the Pokemon anime in general, is pretty bad.

Does Bionicle count? I'm pretty sure there was a miniseries that aired and there were four movies. Assuming it would count, several of the bionicle movies were given fine ratings by critics although the strengths and weaknesses of their filmed changed between movies. Sometimes it was too story heavy, too little action, things like that but I enjoyed the movies I actually saw. Unfortunately most of them were straight to video or dvd.

The animated Transformers movie is by no means bad. I'm not really much of a Transformers buff, I loved Beast Wars and that was about it. But looking at it not as a transformers movie, but as a movie, I found a tale of a young soldier having to grow up and take control after their leader falls in battle. There were parts I disliked, such as the kid (oh god do I hate him) and I wondered why how Unicron exploded, but by no means did I find it bad. Not incredible, but bordering on great. And yes, I can see where some people could draw comparisons to Star Wars, but literature is full of retellings.

But an adults standard of 'bad' is somewhat different from a child's, and the children are the target audience.

It'd be like me rating how fun I find a Barbie doll to play with.

So? Plenty of kids films meet a great critical reception, so it's not like they're holding them to some unattainable standard.

*shrugs*

The point I guess I am making is: If the kids like it, then it's served it's purpose. It doesn't really matter if they don't like it, as it's not made for them.
