Almost in all genre's of gaming and movies the crossbow is considered the most deadliest weapon in the mediums stock, It makes sense since a Crossbow is just really really cool but to think of it hard a crossbow shouldn't really be considered the best out of the given lot since as a weapon it's pretty damn useless if you don't know how to use it.

It has to be made out of the right material.

The arrow ammo is not the easiest to carry around nor the best to manufacture.

Many factors such as weather conditions can effect the efficany of the weapon.

It takes skill to use making it only useful for the person who has extreme training in it.

It has a higher chance of backfire then any other ranger weapon.

Some mediums made sense out of it such as Killzone 2 with rocket like power to blot hostiles into walls then blow them up, but overall if you compare the cross bow to the gun the gun is just better.

So why does the Crossbow still get alot of hype and love ?

I can't actually think of any games which mix gun and crossbow. I don't play those kind of games...

I thought one of the big pros to the crossbow was the fact that it could be given to people with little to no training and have them point it and pull the trigger thus killing whoever is directly in front of them. Sure you're not gonna be an expert marksman with it without experience and practice, but that goes for pretty much any weapon, even guns.

Regardless though, I don't know where you get this idea that crossbows are overhyped, most games and movies I've seen treat them as they are, a projectile weapon with often more force than a normal bow, but with a slower firing rate.

Timeslitters 2 has a crossbow in the weapons list and it's an awesome game.

OT Crossbows were the shotgun of the medieval world, the only problem with them was the amount of time it took to reload.

That's true, I'd forgotten about Timesplitters.

However, how on earth are they like shotguns...? That's just illogical.

They're cool.

Also, I don't think any medium considers them the best, just that they look the most awesome.

How about the Sonic Crossbow in Condemned 2 could kill a big machine dude with one hit.

I think the cool thing about the crossbow is how creative you can make the ammo.

not really true as it became popular due to it being much easier to train people to use compared to the longbow for example which took decades for people to build up the muscle and fire effectively and accurately. plus bolts were easier to carry around than arrows.

I was putting their power into perspective. Compare the power of a handgun to a shotgun...thats the relative difference between a bow and crossbow, they used to use them to take down armoured troops because the bolts had that much power behind them.
{I wasn't saying they fired like shells XD}

I think we can count Half-Life 2 as well.

OP: You watch Unskippable, you should know that crossbows are much more effective than guns. Seriously.

i know what you mean. crossbow in bioshock is ridiculously powerful what with the incindiary bolts but however brought on practicality with electric trap bolts. i loved in time splitters 2 that you could light the tip on fire and shoot flaming bolts.

As always, your posts are impossibly hard to read. Seriously, how hard is it to just use Firefox with a dictionary, if after more than a year you STILL can't write correctly or use the proper plural forms of simple nouns?

Also, crossbows were good when there were few targets and you didn't care about the rapid fire.

Battle of Crecy can tell you this. English sharpshooters were able to rapidly fire arrows over a distance of 250 meters, while the French had slow crossbows with a range of 350 that fired only a single bolt for every 5 arrows an archer could fire.

Who cares they had 100 meters of advantage and more power? French army was desecrated by a barrage of arrows. Today, automatic crossbows are superior to bows, especially when it comes to aim, and are easier to load and use than in the old days.

Are you comparing guns to crossbows? Seriously! I got a thread idea. Let's compare nukes to catapults.

The reason crossbows go straight through armour, that's why they're protrayed as awesome.
It's presumed that if they can penetrate a solid piece of metal, they'll really fuck someone up.

Also: Crossbow = silent, the projectile is bigger than a bullet and with modern materials, a crossbow is a very sturdy and safe weapon.

Guns: Loud, fast firing, high ammo capacity, smaller projectiles, you know the rest, firearms are everywhere.

Actually, crossbows in Fallen Earth are the "early rifles" seeming as its much easier to craft a bolt then it is to craft a rifle cartridge, they're much easier to come by. Crossbows can do quite a bit of damage, whether against a soft or armored target, as its easier to have a high amount of power behind the bolt when you cock a crossbow compared to having to hold the bow-string of a bow.

Basically, a crossbow would be better in a post-apocolyptic atmosphere then a gun, since its much simpler to repair, furnish ammo, and use effectively. In a modern world where manufactured ammo is plentiful though, its impracticle.
