Custom Jeweler Tells Comic Nerds To "Lock That Down"

Are you in love with a pretty girl but you can't find the words to express your feelings? Maybe you should make her a custom engagement ring to break the ice.

This week's release of Green Lantern means that there's a huge number of tie-ins just about everywhere you look. A custom jeweler, Passion Fire Diamonds, has just released a new ad that pays homage to both Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern franchise in general.

The ad is part of a series, "Gotta Lock It Down," that basically tells average guys that they can convince stunning women to marry them so long as they use a custom ring to express their love. So far, the ads have shown a guy who just cannot say the right thing to his girlfriend, another guy who uses a ring to distract his love from the movie hunks she sees on TV, and this latest one, about a comic nerd who realizes the pretty girl in his store is just as much a Green Lantern fan as he is.

Anyone who grew up identifying as a nerd can probably relate with this commercial: We've all met at least one person who's gorgeous and shares a lot of the same interests as us. And, like the poor guy in the video, a lot of folks never work up the courage to actually say anything to the object of their desire. That said, getting an engagement ring for the girl who you've never really talked to is probably counting your chickens before they've hatched.

Now, while the overall idea of the commercial is somewhat cute, I've got a couple of bones to pick with it. First off, painting all comic nerds as slackers who don't want to move out of their parents' home is ... Well, it's a little irritating, to say the least. Secondly, I disagree with the girl's point about Hal Jordan (Hal is an awesome Green Lantern, though I like Kyle Rayner just fine).

Counting your chickens before they've hatched? That guy would be totally in with a green lantern ring... or two.

It wasn't even that funny, stereotypes and all. But I guess (smaller) companies gotta do what they gotta do to get some recognition and there's worse ways than being associated with a Hollywood Summer Blockbuster (and if the movie turns out to be a faithful adaption even better). It's not like this is the worst pop-culture show making fun of comic culture

Reading the article first I had a knee jerk reaction of nerd annoyance, but after watching the ad it's all gone. It was cute. Can't say that the approach would work for me, but its a nice thought.

You know how many hookers you could get for the price of that ring?!?!? Just remember kids you don't pay a hooker for sex, you pay her to go the fuck away after the fact.

If they REALLY wanted to attract nerds, they should of been promising Green Lantern rings or something like that.

Ugh. "Gotta lock that down?"

That motto isn't sexist or creepy in the slightest >_>

XD

Sorry. That's... eh.

This was adorable. Although Luke Skywalker was totally ambitious -- restless at his aunt & uncle's and then later rushing off to save Han and Leia instead of taking his time training...

this is the most chauvinistic and hilarious thing i have ever read.

OT: ive seen plenty of women shack up with worse men over less, so this is certainly a viable tactic by my experience.

and no mr journalist, i cannot relate to the commercial despite being a nerd; female nerds are still a myth to me :p

Did that actually run as a commercial?

I know that I'm going to be misunderstood, but I have to say it:

He needs a ring that says; "I love you, will you please shut up?"
My reality never unfolds that way.

A Green Lantern ring? For an engagement ring, surely you'd go for the Star Sapphire version...

I failed to see where it was said "all comic nerds as slackers who don't want to move out of their parents' home"

She was talking about Luke Skywalker, though I can see how it was supposed to be relevant to the guy. Still, not sure if that's what was meant by it.

The commercial just showed an attractive girl who loves comics and nerdy stuff, and he fell immediately in love. I mean, c'mon, I'd be in love too.

It's actually articles like this that contribute to the stereotype that we are anti-social shut-ins that live with mommy and daddy. We see just a glimmer of insult and cry about it. That's my two-cents.

I, more of a gamer nerd rather than comic nerd but nerd nonetheless, think this commercial is very funny.

Also: Admittedly, I think the "Gotta Lock That Down" slogan is completely dumb.

So, women can be bought and guys that don't have money will always be single.

And there's nothing creepy about buying an engagement ring for someone.

I thought we'd moved on from the 1950s?

So, is the hope that socially handicapped people will go out and buy a ring, give it to some stranger who will be disgusted and reject them out of hand, at which point the customer will commit suicide?

That's one hell of a business model. As in "they should burn in the fires of".

Hey, don't knock it. My wedding ring is a Green Lantern ring and it's awesome.
