Cutscene Incompetence

What's your worst example of cutscene induced stupidity/suckiness in a video game?

I'd go with the one near the beginning of Red Dead Redemption, in which John Marston attempts to draw his pistol on three rifle-wielding bandits who are all aiming right at him and (SURPRISE) gets shot in the gut.

This one measly bullet puts our hero out of commission for a couple of days, yet over the course of the game he gets shot dozens - maybe even hundreds - of times and never so much as stumbles. Perhaps the doctor in Armadillo gave him some kind of magic super-tonic?

The Resident Evil 6 demo made me laugh when you tripped the metal detectors and in the cutscene, instead of showing the zombies notice by, I dunno, turning their heads or something, they do this fastforward shuffle towards me. The only genuine enjoyment I

Also in Mass Effect 2, I lost Mordin in the Suicide Mssion by a rocket to the face, whuch I thought was strange because he'd taken plenty of bullets and rockets to the face in regular gameplay. I guess it was just one too many for him.

I do find it interesting how in one playthrough of Mass Effect 2 Tali died from a rocket to the face after I accidentally selected Grunt to be the fire team leader (not intended). I find it interesting because her death really had nothing to do with Grunt's leadership skills, the door just malfunctioned.

So what he was just such an epicly bad choice that the sheer volume of his inexperience as a leader caused the door to malfunction on its own?

Thankfully, cutscenes are far from the most important thing in XCOM. It's still very jarring though.
Maybe in the originals... The new one thinks that 10 seconds is far too long a time for a player to go without seeing another cutscene.

From what I've seen the new one is very low on cutscenes, the HORRIBLE demo/decent tutorial had them to get the setting right and from there I think you only get one at the end

Lol, really? reminds me of Dragon Age.

A good example of Cutscene incompetence is in Dead rising 2 (there must be around 20 or so post of mine mentioning this game already LOl).

I will make it super short: (SPOILERS!!!)

The ending A. In short, the protagonist gets killed by a zombie, despiste the fact that he potentially killed thousands by that point in the game, may have all kinds of crazy weapons, ranged or otherwise, hell he even have meele moves that instakill zombies, HELL the guy can take a shot from a sniper rifle and only lose 1 cube of heatlh (for reference, the max health is something like 12 cubes. 1 is practically nothing. A zombie´s bite actually do LESS damage than this, it takes 2 to lose 1 cube), and YET he got killed by some random zombie at the end (And for an equally retarded reason to boot).

Nope. It dosnt feels right at all. I mean, yeah, gameplay and story are not the same, but its just plain ridiculous.

Probably not exactly what the OP had in mind, but it really irks me when everyone talks about protecting Serah in FFXIII-2, like she's some fragile flower. Then combat starts, she proceeds to kick the monsters' asses, after which Snow and Noel fight over which one of them gets to protect her next. She seems to be doing just fine without you holding her hand, so fuck off!

There's a subtle difference in the cutscene when you select a "proper" leader like Miranda--she directly calls for suppressing fire, and the coordination required to do that is what prevent the Collectors from getting a potshot off and killing your specialist. If you send anyone else, the cover fire isn't well-enough coordinated to keep the enemy from firing (from what I remember, it's just kind of "shoot at the things on the other side of the door to dissuade them from taking shots.") It's hard to see, but it's definitely there.

Yeah, cutscene's incompetence in FF is off the charts. Hope in FF13 was one of the worst examples. To paraphrase Yatzhee: He whines, complains and act like a helpless kid most of the times, but the moment the battle starts he (literally) pulls a boomerang out of his ass and vanquish everything in his path...

And, of course: Why didn't they use a phoenix down on Aerith?

Every unskippable cutscene ever. And skippable ones too, come to think of it. The latter are just more bearable because you can skip them.

I feel like you could make a drinking game out of ME2 and parts of ME3 for every cheap shot of Miranda's ass in cutscenes.

Also, and I understand these are not really "cutscenes," but in Skyrim would it have killed them to have had at least a few hand-gestures and body-movements for people as they talk? So you don't have a room full of people arguing stock-still with their hands calmly at their sides?

Kai Leng. The concept of the character, the plot armor in his cutscenes, the sheer Konami-ness of his very existence. The nerve of those writers!

As for recently, the XCOM demo left a lot to be desired in cutscenes. Voice actors with very stereotypical American accents voice acting Japanese, Scottish, Argentinian, German, Russian etc. etc. characters. Top it off with bad lip synch and lack of any sort of facial expressions. And clipping issues when models interact with the environment. Very shoddy. Thankfully, cutscenes are far from the most important thing in XCOM. It's still very jarring though.
I'd also mention the first tutorial mission in XCOM, which is basically just a drawn out cutscene, but it takes cutscene incompetence to a whole new level. It actually forces me to act incredibly stupid!

In Resident Evil 4, as soon as you've acquired Ashley, you have you're first encounter with Saddler who explains that Ashley, being the President's daughter, is the key to revealing to the world his astounding power. And what's the first thing he does after having said this? Call in a couple of evil monks to shoot flaming arrows at her and Leon.

As a matter of fact his hence men/monsters are constantly trying to kill her throughout the game, despite the fact that she's vital to the succes of his plans for world domination.

Then there's the cutscene before the final boss fight: Leon has single-handedly laid waste to Saddler's entire operation, and still Saddler's like "MUHAHAHAHA, resistance is futile." Seriously, is this guy the most senile villain in the history of gaming or what?

Though the fact that it's this stupid and goofy is why I love the story of Resident Evil 4.

It's been a while, and there's a good chance I might have missed something...but why are they trying to stop Ashley's escape in the first place? The plan was to get her back to the States to spread the parasite, right? So why not just let Leon nab her?

There's a perfectly good reason for that. [http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=176]

He doesn't die. This happens. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT5v9gX404g]

Anyway this kind of thing happens a lot in games. It does annoy me.

All shall happen as the Great Lord Saddler wills it!

Even he can't grasp the brilliant intricacy of his master plan.
