So I recently saw a commercial for ^this^ movie and it gave me several mixed feelings.

I understand that cyberbullying be a sensitive subject. A lot of schools and media tend to make a huge fuss everytime a young teen commits suicide due to "cyberbullies".
Here's an example: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=3882520&page=1
Don't get me wrong, it's a tragedy everytime any young soul takes their life (but that's a discussion for another thread) and cyberbullying is no exception. But everytime I hear or read about cyberbullying it almost seems like it has been blown out of proportion.

And now a Cyberbullying Movie has been made to warn about the consequences of bullying over the internet. I think that it may be a bit too much. Does cyberbullying really need anymore time in the spot light? I myself think that phsyical bullying may be worse than anything done over the internet, but I digress.

The movie comes out on ABC on July 17. Here's a link to the website:

Hmm...well, I did see a movie about the dangers of internet porn addiction soooo this isn't really an issue, IMO. Let them address what they want. Hell, the parents who buy into this might keep younger children off the internet. But, what do I know? It's just some random TV movie. In other words...

I cant sympathize with those who are "cyberbullied" it doesnt seem that bad. Maybe you shouldnt be giving out your personal info to so many people?

Im sure abc fam is going to dramatize the shit out of it though, same as lifetime.

Cyber bullying = regular bullying, but it uses the internet/phones to accomplish the same thing. People commit suicide due to harassment, not the medium in which its done.

Not that I'm saying a movie about it couldn't be beneficial. I have nothing against it, but it will probably be typical of movies that try to show technology and either be dated or just completely wrong.

Was it the lifetime movie "Cyber Seduction," by any chance?

As long as they are honest about the subject (and not all "OMG technology!") I think it is a good idea. I think cyberbullying is a real problem, and therefore deserves a lot of attention. I don't think it is quite as bad as physical bullying, but that is an age old problem that just isn't getting any special new attention. As far as I know it is still getting all of the attention it used to get.

I doubt that the attention for cyberbullying is excessive, because I think that unfortunately the people who need to know about it the most, are also the least likely to pick up on it. Most people on this forum like and are interested in technology and have a pretty firm grasp on how it all works. I think it is therefore also a lot more likely that we will stumble upon all of these cyberbullying articles. But the people who are less tech-savvy are probably the ones who need to hear about it the most.

I do hope that the reporting on it will be good though. We don't need any sensationalist "The Evilnet is killing your children" headlines, especially since those who know little about these things are the most likely to buy into that shit. I think a movie that is widely supported by schools, and may receive media attention is a step in the good direction as long as it actually aims to educate and not try to make us fear technology.

Well, a good thing with cyber bullying is that you can ignore it. I can understand getting upset over the internet, but it's not like they can follow you, and some things allow blocking.

I always find the posters in my college saying "We can stop bullying" stupid.
1. Because by college most people are fine and don't intentionally go around annoying people.
2. Because to stop bullying is to stop free will. No ammount of punishment will end it.

Cyberbullying is the worst.

You get bullied in real life and it's over when the bullying stops or goes away. On the Internet your humiliation is saved on a server maybe for the rest of your life.

The whole idea of people committing suicide becasue of bullies always got on my nerves. Is getting picked on really that bad? If it is, fuckin' punch the guy in the nuts.

However, I realize that you cannot do taht over the internet. That's what the little red X on the uper right is for. If someone is bothering you online GO TO A DIFFERENT WEBSITE. Seriously, is it that hard? Why is ther such a big fuss over this? IS ABC really hurting that much from losing Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men?

Maybe I'm not an expert on the subject...actually, I'm not an expert on the subject, but...

In real life, you can be followed, harassed, molested, etc. The obligations you have in real life might prevent you from adequately escaping the bully in question.

In Cyberspace, I am not sure I can think of a game or service that doesn't let you block messages from certain people, and even if you can't, you can always see that the message came from said bully and just ignore it?

If I am missing something, please (politely) enlighten me, but this just doesn't seem like a big deal from where I stand.

Note: This comes from someone who suffered physical bullying.

I don't have much sympathy for the victims of cyberbullying. Having been bullied at school i know what it feels like, you just want to get away from it (which is difficult if you see the bully five days a week every week), if you can't get away from your bullies on the internet (by creating a new account, not going to that website, not using the internet as a social tool and get a hobby/join a club) then there is little hope for you when you grow up.

Kids need to stop being assholes, and the kids being bullied need to be less sensitive. Thats a blanked statement, I know. There are many cases of severe bullying where this doesn't apply, so don't quote me going "Some kids are bullied really bad though!".
