I find it's important to remember the carrot method: you may wave a carrot, any carrot in front of the players' nose, you make make it look delicious, you may extol the virtues of eating carrots, but you may not force them to eat it.
I ran a campaign for some people new to D&D, and I made the stupid mistake of forcing them to follow the plot I had rigidly. It failed miserably. Make sure to leave different ways of approaching problems available, because the solution you have in mind might not occur to the players.
Above all, the paperwork is just a guide. What the GM says, goes. Make it up on the spot if you go off the charts.
