Everyone talks about them as if there's no other way to play retro style or fighting games. This always confused me as I use the analogue stick for SSF4(360) and have no troubles.

Well, it's technically not old, but SPvTW: The Game was a lot more fun with the analog stick. And even more fun with a guitar hero controller.

Hmmm...

I think for me at least, the D-pad works best for anything on a 2D plane (ie, fighters, platformers, etc), while the analog sticks work a lot better for 3D gaming. That and for fighters, the D-Pad somewhat give out more precise inputs?(I think) I always have my hands all sliding around if its on an analog for fighters, but thats just cause I have big hands.

Joystick, in my fighters?

Honestly a fightstick is the best way to go, but D-pad comes in a close second.

The reason for this is that most fighting games use DIGITAL input, as in only the 8 basic directions. Using a Joystick means that it has to convert analog input into simpler 8 directional input.

Because of this, the Dpad is much faster to use and a fightstick is even faster... Also more accurate and less open to interpretation by the game.

I usually just go with whatever.

Odd case: when I play Fate/Unlimited Codes (fighting game), I tend to use the joystick for movement and the D-pad for attacks. It feels quicker and easier to pull off quarter- and half-circle motions with the pad.

I have been playing Trials HD with my brother a lot lately (I love beating the guys I know on his friendslist) and for that game the dpad is not only superior, its necessary for success. It's also better for fighting games based on tricky imput combos (not the buttonmashers, I'm looking at you soulcalibur).

I still don't think the 360 dpad is very good though.

Yeah, I always use them D-pad to play 2-D fighters, and to navigate menus.

Damn you D-PAD!! *Crunch**Boing* Sa-a-agat, you drank all the milk again! >.> flash collab anyone? no?

D-pad is kinda the jackass friend to me. I never know if they're actually going to be friendly, or pull the douche maneuver on me and screw up whatever I was trying to do. If it's on a retro game like SNES It's fine and natural to me, but it also sounds like from your wording that there were joysticks for a retro system. If so then i've never tried them, and that's why d-pad ftw on old games.

As for fighting games it's all how you learned. You can kick ass with the analog, d-pad, or arcade stick as long as you've practiced the hell out of any one of em. I saw some guy with a sony controller using the analog as Zangeif pulling no jumping 720's on his opponent. I was mind blasted! He didn't get far in the tourney, but hey you fight the tenth in the state kid when you're a walk in no one expects you to go far.
