Get 2 hourglasses. Drop one... then at some point start the slow-mo rewind. Show an intact hourglass. Flash Failure and Crowbar cuts. Crowbar 2nd hourglass. Reverse Slow. End with a final shot of an intact hourglass.

Fine grains of sand would look like smoke that's why sandstorms look more like speedy sand fog.
