So I've been trying to play Heavy Rain, and I can say that so far it's really drawn me in. For a QTE-filled game, I don't find them as annoying as I have in other titles, with plenty of chances to recover if you miss one, and in some ways it adds to the cinematic atmosphere, as your character stumbles, takes punches, goofs up, and other moments that remind us that these aren't world saving flawless badass heroes.

But for all that is holy, while the game really does a great job of immersing me in it's noiristic drama and emotions (*Spoiler* I actually felt like CRAP for not making the most of my time with my sons as the beginning unfolds given the series of events that follows..), one thing has literally PLAGUED what would otherwise be a surprisingly intense and amazing experience:

GAME BREAKING GLITCHES

Halfway through the damn PROLOGUE of the game, When I first met my lovely "children", the game straight up froze on me as if to say "maybe you arent ready for this type of emotional experience, lets give you a moment to reflect". But then, the game never started. Ultimately I had to do a hard reboot to get things going again. Ok, so maybe it was just a little glitch, no biggie.
That is, until I attempted to start from the last checkpoint, to which I was shocked to discover my game save was corrupted. So I had to start OVER again. Ok, no big deal, I'd only been playing through the opening, so I can replay that hour of my life, no sweat! Sure, I'll have to sit through the long, unskippable opening sequences again, go through the tedious motions of exploring the game's system by having my avatar take a piss, brush his teeth, shower, drop a deuce, and what ever. I'm a long time, die-hard gamer.. I'm used to this. I've played through worse glitches.

After playing through again, getting to the second characters introduction, bam, the game freezes hard again! Another hard reboot of the ol PS3 work horse and about now I'm starting to wonder how much damage it does to the PS3 to have to reset it over and over again. By now I'm a bit frustrated, but luckily the game save was fine, and I picked things up not far from where I had last let off, and even had a chance to replay a sequence again, this time to flawless perfection.

Enter the next character, Mr. FBI. After going through all his crime scene experience etc, walking back to my car I get ganked by the Freeze monster yet AGAIN! Three times in the beginning of a game, in less than two hours!?! Ok, thats enough for me to officially declare something aint right here. Either Quantic Dream is trying to add to the atmosphere of the game by frustrating ME directly by causing the game to freeze inadvertently forcing me to restart my system EVERY time, or somebody epically failed in the QA department before this game shipped.

Has anyone else experienced these problems yet? If so, how the hell did all these game reviewers and testers totally miss this if it's happening to everyone? Is there some sort of hidden agenda where the success of this game is so important to so many people that they willfully ignored these game-breaking glitches in order to encourage more people to part with their hard earned money to buy something that for all intents and purposes appears to be BROKEN?

It could just be my game disk, but I don't know why it would lock up my entire PS3 forcing a restart. I might take this copy back to the store and exchange it just to see if maybe thats the problem, but I have a sinking feeling it is not, and a little black cloud is about to unleash a torrent of heavy rain all over the sunny day that this title could have been..

Lol thanks.

To be quite honest, this sort of thing is becoming a serious black mark on my PS3 enjoying experience. I don't know what it is, but the PS3 seems to me to have the most game breaking glitches of any of the three consoles. I had issues with GHostbusters, so I had to get the Xbox version, same with Fallout 3, and Star Wars Force Unleashed. If developers aren't going to work the flaws out before release, it's going to start driving me to consider the Xbox version more and more often for multi-platform games. That and I'm sick to death of having to sit through a 20 minute installation/patch download session every single time I pop in a brand new game! I just want to put the game in and PLAY, something you used to be an advantage of a console over a PC. Now it seems I spend more time installing crap and working around bugs than PLAYING.

As it is, I am now seriously considering getting the Xbox version of Final Fantasy XIII just to AVOID quality issues, swapping out 10 disks be damned.

To be fair, you might not be. I barely was. I hate that for you though, I never had a single freeze.

I only had one freeze during the game (near the end of Jayden's first scene).

I thought I had a freeze reloading the save game, but it turned out that it just took a really freaking long time to load with the face close-up staring at me.

It seems like just about every PS3 game I've played has frozen exactly once and never again.

Ok well then given consensus, perhaps then I'll just take my disc back.. perhaps it's just as simple as that, I have a defective copy. I really want to love this game though, so I'm willing to get a new copy and try again, although after doing some googling, it looks like it might actually be a problem caused by the patch that was released.

Have any of you downloaded the patch?

EDIT: Also, just out of curiosity, those of you who have already finished your first playthrough, about how long is the game? Seems people have been suspiciously silent on the game length, and while I'm all about the cinematic experience, I don't want to be seeing credits in 6 hours...

I've heard a few people have had a few issues with the game at the start but a restart or a test of any HDMI cables has fixed it.

Ok so I've had my LAST freeze!!!!!! I'm almost tempted to not even finish the game and just go read spoilers.

But I'm really loving this game... I think I'll... take it back to the store and trade for a new copy just to make sure it's not just something to do with the disk, although I can't imagine it is.

Out of curiosity, Does anyone know yet if on multiple play throughs if the origami killer's identity changes, based on the decisions you make, etc? Also, anyone who has finished an initial playthrough, about how long did it take you? Thanks.. Just wondering.

Interesting, you just seem to be a very unlucky guy.

Usually Bethesda games (Oblivion and Fallout 3 mainly) freeze up on me every so often, though that's usually after 22636 consecutive hours of playing. Few other games have frozen on me, though hopefully Heavy Rain won't when I get it. It's odd though, I've never heard of these bugs from all the reviews I've read. You'd think they'd mention it, but whatev.

I actually saw you online last night, I think you were playing WKC... was gonna shoot you a message but didnt want to bother ya.

Lol that pointless comment aside, I too was wondering why few game reviews seem to mention this problem, but over on the Official Playstation online forums is a mega-big thread with other gamers complaining about the same issue, so it seems to be bigger than I thought. Most seem to believe that it's due to the patch for the game you have to download before playing, and thats why most reviewers didn't notice the issue. Others think it might be a batch of defective game discs that were shipped out, another reason the reviewers may have missed the problem.

Since Yahtzee reviews games much later than their usual release, I'm interested in seeing if his review (assuming he does one) makes mention of the problem as well.

Naw, sadly I don't have White Knight Chronicles yet, probably thinking of someone else. I'm just waiting for Gamefly to send me "Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising" so I can immediately send it back for Heavy Rain :D

With regards to length, I imagine it can vary quite a bit depending on who, if anyone, dies. I don't really time my playthroughs but I'm estimating my time somewhere around the 8-10 hours mark. A respectable time.

Got a new copy. Got another freeze and another forced hard reboot.

Doralingus, this is BULLSHIT.
Well, have you updated the PS3 firmware? Relying on old firmware can cause freezes. Also, if there are freezes of any kind in any other games you own, it could be your PS3's laser going bad.

On my own PS3, the only game that's ever frozen on me is Oblivion, and that was only after a 6 hour session.

I never had flat-out freezing, but there were a few instances of my character getting stuck to the point of breaking the game. Twice in one scene, each requiring a reboot of the game, and once requiring a replay of the level (because it check-pointed just as my character got irrevocably stuck standing through a chair).

So yes, so far it has seemed like the playtesting depot. dropped the ball a bit.
