So I've been trying to play Heavy Rain, and I can say that so far it's really drawn me in. For a QTE-filled game, I don't find them as annoying as I have in other titles, with plenty of chances to recover if you miss one, and in some ways it adds to the cinematic atmosphere, as your character stumbles, takes punches, goofs up, and other moments that remind us that these aren't world saving flawless badass heroes.
But for all that is holy, while the game really does a great job of immersing me in it's noiristic drama and emotions (*Spoiler* I actually felt like CRAP for not making the most of my time with my sons as the beginning unfolds given the series of events that follows..), one thing has literally PLAGUED what would otherwise be a surprisingly intense and amazing experience:
GAME BREAKING GLITCHES
Halfway through the damn PROLOGUE of the game, When I first met my lovely "children", the game straight up froze on me as if to say "maybe you arent ready for this type of emotional experience, lets give you a moment to reflect". But then, the game never started. Ultimately I had to do a hard reboot to get things going again. Ok, so maybe it was just a little glitch, no biggie.
That is, until I attempted to start from the last checkpoint, to which I was shocked to discover my game save was corrupted. So I had to start OVER again. Ok, no big deal, I'd only been playing through the opening, so I can replay that hour of my life, no sweat! Sure, I'll have to sit through the long, unskippable opening sequences again, go through the tedious motions of exploring the game's system by having my avatar take a piss, brush his teeth, shower, drop a deuce, and what ever. I'm a long time, die-hard gamer.. I'm used to this. I've played through worse glitches.
After playing through again, getting to the second characters introduction, bam, the game freezes hard again! Another hard reboot of the ol PS3 work horse and about now I'm starting to wonder how much damage it does to the PS3 to have to reset it over and over again. By now I'm a bit frustrated, but luckily the game save was fine, and I picked things up not far from where I had last let off, and even had a chance to replay a sequence again, this time to flawless perfection.
Enter the next character, Mr. FBI. After going through all his crime scene experience etc, walking back to my car I get ganked by the Freeze monster yet AGAIN! Three times in the beginning of a game, in less than two hours!?! Ok, thats enough for me to officially declare something aint right here. Either Quantic Dream is trying to add to the atmosphere of the game by frustrating ME directly by causing the game to freeze inadvertently forcing me to restart my system EVERY time, or somebody epically failed in the QA department before this game shipped.
Has anyone else experienced these problems yet? If so, how the hell did all these game reviewers and testers totally miss this if it's happening to everyone? Is there some sort of hidden agenda where the success of this game is so important to so many people that they willfully ignored these game-breaking glitches in order to encourage more people to part with their hard earned money to buy something that for all intents and purposes appears to be BROKEN?
It could just be my game disk, but I don't know why it would lock up my entire PS3 forcing a restart. I might take this copy back to the store and exchange it just to see if maybe thats the problem, but I have a sinking feeling it is not, and a little black cloud is about to unleash a torrent of heavy rain all over the sunny day that this title could have been..
