Dante's Inferno feels too much like GoW...

I've recently acquired Dante's Inferno, and after only a few seconds with the game Dante felt like Kratos, through and through. I understand that there is a strong narrative behind the game, portrayed quite well, but I can't help but quit playing at times because I feel like I've done it all before.

Mind you, Lust and Gluttony impressed me, but could the game have tried a different gameplay type to make it more original? Keeping the story and intricate set pieces together while changing enough to bring fresh control ideas wouldn't have hurt.

The QTE's are unnerving too.

The question I'm coming to is: Is it right for games today to take large chunks of other games (See Darksiders and Dante's) as opposed to trying to add a little more to their genre?

This has been done to death in the past few months. Yes these games all use elements or straight up rip offs of other games but they do it because its a formula that works. And to say that GoW is the first hack and slash game like that would also be foolish. Every game has elements of other games and its not like DI was trying to hide the fact that it was a GoW clone.

Erm, is it three months ago? Is there a wormhole to the past? Tell me!

OP: yeah, games copy each other. GoW is built off of Devil May Cry. Pong copied table tennis. If you like the subject matter/gameplay, then you like it. If you don't, you don't.

But..it did it well.

Im ok with a game borrowing from another, hell if flat out says its a clone of another game but, its good in its own rights then im fine with it.

DI was a lot like GoW but it did things in its own way and was a genuinely fun game.

yea when God of War came out I thought "this game is fun but the mechanics feel too much like Devil May Cry, except no sword+gun juggling combos."

point being GoW wasn't the first in the genre, they borrowed heavily from other games, too

I'll never understand why this is a negative aspect.
Actually, the head developer of Dante's Inferno remarked multiple times that if/when people said it was in the least reminiscent of God of War, it would be viewed as a compliment, since that was their main "inspiration" or equivocably their only source...and their only tool was the cut/paste combo.

Yeah I don't get that either. They're all like: "Dante's Inferno is a God of War clone!" and then I think: "And thats a Bad thing?"

I am kinda late to this party. (I have been anti GoW a lot in these forums too)

I played Darksiders and Bayonetta in full, with much enjoyment, before I played GoW1. I don't like the comparisons between them, but I will admit to the similarities. I only played the Dante demo, but this is what I think:

Dante didn't seem like GoW because of the following: Kratos didn't ride the beasts after beating them like it seems the Dante game lets you. Kratos didn't have to upgrade powers (his exp was universal) that contrast depending on how you played. Kratos was more fluid w/ his moves while Dante seemed to me more farming than hack n slash. I think Dante has move variety w/ enemies based on vids I've seen, but Kratos has more moves.

I am not sure where the fanboy ends, and my honest gamer begins for this..... but I don't like when people compare games, unless it's for a game that shares it's title or spin offs.

I played all of Gow 1 these last few weeks, for the first time, because it is said to be a shining example of a great play station game. I liked Darksiders and Bayonetta more.

Plus, didn't Devil may cry get released 3 years before Gow?? (I only ask because I hear people say GoW is like that game, I never played it tho)
it is well the first one anyway dmc 2001 gow 2005 i own the first one the second dmc came out in 2003

I liked both Dante's Inferno and God of War I, II, and III to get all the Trophies for all four.

God of War is better. Dante's Inferno isn't bad at all. I liked it. Darksiders is bad.

Darksiders is also, and this has been talked about alot...
I understand I'm late to the party on this one, but I felt too many similarities in Dante's and posted here. What got me was the Right-stick rolling and the double jumping. The bosses in Dante's are nice and very interesting, and the game as a whole isn't bad, I was pointing out something I had recently noticed on my own.

Darksiders was guilty of this too, but I personally didn't enjoy it.
