I think any company that releases their game on GFWL should be forced to actually USE IT before hand.

Then, well, there goes GFWL because they'll either stop using it or MS will bankrupt themselves by trying to bribe developers to use it.
We used GFWL because it worked on X360 and it's easier for us.

Yeah, it doesn't quite cut the mustard when it's put that way, does it?

It would be for their own good.

But maybe I am biased since GFWL isn't avaliable here.

Now see, there was a perfectly legitimate explaination as to why they chose GFWL. They have experience with the architecture and hypothetically that can mean ease of transition and possibly lower overhead by simply adding extra servers to support it. Hell possibly even cross platform play between the 360 & pc versions thus giving a wider array of players to connect with than one platform alone. Not saying that would be the case, but it is a plausible outcome.

Now, though, if they choose to accommodate people, that they will end up having to contend with a different server /architecture/framework thus meaning more internal expense and additional development. Not saying thats a problem, but this is where people get off calling gamers entitled because out of this whole push toward steam no one anywhere considered how much extra expense/work making it available on steam would cause the development staff because as long as they get what they want, they dont care how it happens.

Im really hoping Steam gets snubbed, and they accommodate and put it on Origin. Then watch as a new petition comes up condemning origin as spyware and again "asking" for steam.

On side note, I hope what I heard about no high rez textures is not true. Limited K&M support doesnt bother me because really, its designed for a controller, adding K&M support really adds nothing but needless complexity.

Well it looks like you have read none of the posts since people have clearly documented all of their problems with GFWL. This isn't "we want steam because steam" its "we don't want GFWL since it keeps deleting my save files and having massive connection issues". I'm not going to buy a product that has a good chance of not working before it's even released. Also releasing a game on PC with no K&M support. What? No that's beyond a terrible idea. It would be like releasing a game on 360 with no controller support and only joystick.

I honestly don't think they will change it, August is way too early for them to port it, add the new content, and rewrite the net code.
Maybe if they did something like, ok guys we're going to open preorders, if we get X amount of pre-orders we know there is enough buyers for the game, we'll delay the release and change out GFWL. Because right now they are kind of in murky waters, they aren't sure what kind of profit they will turn.
If it ends up that they spend the extra cash and they don't turn a profit, it is going to be a big black mark on the PC fanbase and it will end up screwing the company over.

No GFWL and no Steam. DRM-free! Is it so hard for NAMCO to take this decision? Since the whole issue of Dark Souls feels like a comdey to me, I'm thinking to start a new petition of my own with the following subject:

"Managers of NAMCO, devote one day for god's sake to surf the internet fora and see how much angry the gamers are with the DRM bullshit. Games For Windows Live can still be pirated as every other game. Unavoidably, and you have all my sympathy for that poor NAMCO, you are going to have a money loss either way. Get over with it."

First off, Ive signed the petition. Ive read the petition. Ive read the article on the escapist regarding the petition. Ive read the supplementary threads regarding this. Ive read this thread. I know full well people having problems with GFWL. Some of which are perfectly legitimate.

I also know that GFWL works fine for the most part. After fixing as many peoples computers as I have between family/friends and working as IT I know the largest amount of errors that a computer faces(and I'm talking damn near all) are either PEBCAK or PIBCAK errors.

Now if this really is about what your suggesting, "we want steam because steam" then Origin should be a perfectly acceptable solution then. Or is there a reason why the petition specifically said steam werks and not any other online platform? What of those who DON'T like steam? Is it right to disregard their interest as well?

Now as for K&M, Please note I did not say nor imply there should be no K&M support. What I said was I have no issue if they don't dedicate very much time and or effort to it because the game IS optimized for controllers, and I would not want to see the developers waste a lot of time and effort trying to build a completely new input system PCizing the controls to be more convoluted and needlessly complex just to accommodate one group of people. Or basically the flip side of logic that is presented any time you suggest having game pad support for a PC title.

I don't think anyone was claiming GFWL was causing all of their problems but when the common problems are deleting saves and major connections that nearly all of the GFWL games share then I would say the computer isn't at fault here. Also I'm assuming they say Steamworks because publishers value their oh so useful DRM so much and it's the biggest digital store. While I use Steam I would love for it to have some real competition which is why I want the Baldur's Gate games to only be on Beamdog since they would grow a lot from it and would give Steam a bit more competition if just a little. Back on topic I'm guessing they planned on releasing it on all the digital sites anyway and that it would just come with GFWL like the DoW games, Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, etc. I don't care if they put it on Origin at all but if they made it mandatory I wouldn't get it just because I dislike EA.

Also I cede on your last point since that just means I misunderstood so I apologize for that.

Great news indeed, though my enthusiasm has been weakened after hearin the rumblin about basic PC stuff most likely not at all bein a part of the package. Far as I've heard its planned to be a direct port of the console version. Lack of AA, barely if any keyboard and mouse support, 30 fps cap, console resolutions. Oi.

Hopefully those are just rumors and the game gets released sans the horrid GFWL and with the basic settings that an indie game from 2008 would have. If so, totally goin to be a happy camper and snatch this right up. If only GFWL gets dropped but we don't get the basic settings that every PC game in the last 5 years should have, eh...I'll get it when its under 50 bucks (though that isnt sayin much since I haven't bought a full price game since Skyrim and I still regret it).

Here's hopin for door number 1.

On the other hand, though, anyone expecting more than a copy-paste port is in for a kick in the balls... and before anyone says 'but free extra content', word has it that it was already planned as DLC for consoles before they made a decision on a PC version.

The happy fuckwits at Namco have decided that kb+m support will be minimal and no hi-rez/visual options included. No solid word on mods yet.

If GFWL wasn't a turn off for me (it was borderline) thoughts of MASSIVE console style GUIs and a lack of graphics options is getting there... and if they go out of their way to prevent modding via .ini the way ME3 did... not looking good insofar as me handing over money goes.
First understand that this game wasnt planned for the PCs at all and the controls will be a huge mess for the keyboard, thats for sure, not because they want to but because of the functions of the buttons on the controller and their roles. This game really needs a Xbox 360 controller on the PC.

Also understand that since they started to port it after the game was released on the consoles maybe all those other features were too expensive to add, I would also like to see mods for it but that is one thing that you cant expect from From Software, the multiplayer of the game is strict as hell, they really want you to play the game as they intended (its an asian developer, they are more inclined for that kind of stuff).

Just be glad to have a game that is rather unique in the catalog of available games for the PC, even if that version is only slightly better then the console one (the new content)

Well since the port was announced i decided i would buy, then when GfWL was revealed i would buy depending on the quality of the port.

Now though i may just forego Dark Souls online features and crack GfWL out of it. I can handle crappy PC ports, cant handle GfWL.

I can deal with GFWL.

But i'll never purchase a game that comes with it, just on the principle that if the game works like ass i don't want to have spent money on it.

First, the internet demanded [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/115111-Gamers-Demand-Dark-Souls-PC-Port] that Namco ditch Games for Windows Live and make it a Steam title - or anything but GFWL, really. And who knows? The internet might just get what it wants - again.
Hey Andy, gamers demanded [http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/petition?s=t] anything.

And I can't believe that there are still people like you who equate being a responsible consumer asking for a product that I pay for to be something that actually works with whining and being loud and obnoxious.

I've posted this before on these forums - I have bought over 230 games through Steam and two that use GFWL. With both GFWL games I experienced deleted and corrupted game files after several hours of play and constant hanging login and connection issues to the point where I was unable to continue or complete the games. How is this not a waste of my time and money which can certainly be better spent elsewhere on other games for a much easier and more enjoyable gaming experience?

I am a 40 year old who enjoys playing PC games in my free time not some whiny child and I will not spend my hard earned money on any more games that use GFWL unless I hear that Microsoft have substantially improved the service.

And shame on you escapist, seriously. It was not a 'demand' from the majority of people signing that petition. It was a polite request for them to please consider an alternative.

My preferance would be Steam - they would get the most sales going that route and that is a simple fact. But honestly I would be happy to buy it with any different form of DRM - yes even Ubisoft's always online BS, as long as I was sure to be getting a product that had a decent percentage chance of actually working.

Re the mouse+keyboard vs controller - I personally have no problem playing a game that was created and developed for console and originally had no expectation of ever being ported to PC with a controller. It's easy enough to plug one into my PC to play.

the thing is, i've used GFWL quite a few times and i've never had a problem with it, so i'm failing to see what the fuss is about

I thought that was a foregone conclusion, really. They don't have a lot of time to work with and I doubt they've been given a lot of funding for the port. PC gamers are like stray cats, right? ;)

I'm on the fence, personally. GFWL is disappointing because it's about as useful as tits on a bull. However, if it's a functional port without any major issues it will still be worth a look in my opinion.

people are making it sound like gamers are ungrateful and whning and making unreasonable demands, when it's just customers telling them what products they want to buy. The youngest generation of gamer kiddies seems to go right along with these companies that just plop out a game, say "buy it or fuck off", and react to consumer demand as if they're being insulted.

You can't get anywhere if you don't ask.
