For the Emperor!
Hope fully it's not like DoW 2 where they ditched base building. Hope they go back to Dawn of War Soulstorm/Dark Crusade style. That'll be fun.

To quote from another space marine in power armor, fighting against aliens:

"hell it's about time"

Going to admit. I didn't really care for the idea.

Then I saw this.

A God-Emperor Damned Imperial Knight.

So I went and looked at the actual teaser (People keep calling it a trailer. For shame). Actually loving it. I've seen some people complaining about factions (Only 3 confirmed, as far as I know) and how they might continue 40K's trend of bleeding the fan base for DLC factions. If so, I will obviously have to turn my back on this game, but I'm really, really hoping its not the case this time around.

Count me ridiculously excited, though it was in part due to mistaking the Imperial Knight there for a Chaos Warhound in the first seconds.

Edit: in case people haven't seen it, http://www.pcgamer.com/dawn-of-war-3-inside-relics-biggest-rts-yet/
Bases, larger scale, with upgradeable heroes. Basically a blend of DoW1 and 2, though as usual only 3 races so far.

That trailer was amazing.
The final shot of the marine smiling as he is about to die was almost poetry.

The giant units remind me of Age of Mythology and the titans.

I really liked DoW2 and would love more like that, but for now that isn't the case.

It's confirmed to be a blend between DoW1 and 2 in that base building and big armies are back, but with specialized unit abilities, progression, and cover like the second game.

You can read about it here, including screenshots.

I wonder what they will do with the army painter. more colors, additive bits, maybe actual gameplay changes? I kind of really liked the army painter in DoW1 a lot.

Pisses me off that the only factions are the Terrans, Protoss, and Orks.

I mean, come on guys. At least throw in Chaos or something.

As for the Chaos faction, I'm holding out hope - You never know. Might just be something their holding back for later hype generation.

Why do people even assume that these are the only three races making it in the game? Seems a bit soon to say. Does the presence of Imperial Knights not suggest some sort of other Imperium based faction?

I'll be pretty surprised if Chaos doesn't make the cut at some point, seeing as the Blood Ravens' most recent trials sure involved a butt load of them.

I'm not too big on the trailer, it's kinda long and draggy and doesn't tell a whole lot. The marine smiling like he just jizzed his pants at the end does not quite help. Granted seeing an Imperial Knight piledrive a Wraithlord? got the blood flowing.

But hey, it is more Dawn of War. I want more Dawn of War.

I personally enjoyed the direction DOW2 took. Less an RTS and more a real time SRPG. I'm cool with that, though the multiplayer was a bit weird.

The Imperial Knight appear to be confirmed as the Space Marines super heavy unit (Presumably Dreadnoughts have been 'relegated' to merely a heavy unit).

Protoss? You're getting your games mixed up, Empire, Orks, and Eldar.

What is the 40K trend of bleeding the fanbase for DLC factions?

For Dawn of War 2, all of the factions added after the initial release of the game were released as their own stand alone games with their own single player campaigns as a separate physical retail package.

In fact, I obtained the Chaos and Imperial Guard factions for Dawn of War 2 on physical discs with no downloading necessary, so I can say with 100% certainty that Dawn of War 2 featured no DLC factions (with the possible exception of the Tau and Necron Lord commanders for the Last Stand, although I would argue that one unit for one game mode doesn't constitute as an entire faction, merely just a hero unit with extremely limited use).

Wasn't it also a similar case with the first Dawn of War, that all new factions were added via stand alone expansions with their own campaigns that were released as their own retail packages (so again not DLC)?

From a brief perusal of the WH:40K games on Steam, I don't think I can even find one example of factions being sold as DLC. There are a quite a lot of DLC skins which are purely cosmetic upgrades to existing factions with no effect on gameplay, but I can't see any actual factions themselves being sold as DLC.

Total War: Warhammer and Battlefleet Gothic, the two newest GW games. Both come with 'Pre-Order/Early Adoptor' Faction DLC that will have to be purchased if you don't buy the game early enough.

My apologies, I should have said 'Games Workshop,' not 40K. I can see how that could be confusing.

If that's what your O-face looks like, you are one composed fellow. Most people don't have such luck.

Most of what I've seen and read sounds pretty exciting, but I am a bit worried about the graphics being based on table top models. It looks way too cartoony and 'clean' for 40K.

At the end of the trailer it says "three devastating forces" which suggest we'll only be getting these three at launch.

Oh, that... Heresy.

That makes much more sense. I haven't really been keeping up with the newest glut of Games Workshop's franchise sperging, which seem to be given to anyone developer with the desire to make a quick buck, but I do recall some grumblings about the pre-order DLC for some non-Relic games and the microtransaction nature of some of the mobile offerings.

Still, hopefully that type of behaviour is more on the individual developers rather than mandated by the publisher or Games Workshop, and hopefully Relic will continue their tradition of adding new factions in worthwhile expansions and only offering minor pre-order incentives, such as items of rare Wargear that is cool from a lore point of view, but is ultimately inconsequential and is only really useful for the first couple of levels, or a few exclusive paints for the army painter that initially look impressive with their translucent and effervescent finishes, but are ultimately too gaudy to be used in a decent colour scheme, or as in the case of DOW2 Retribution, a fancy physical package with some nice art cards and gubbins & bitz, but which has no effect on the actual gameplay.
