I tried finding a relevant post on this but I could not find one. Sorry if it's repetitive.

I'm picking Dead Island again and I've only ever gotten past the first chapter, so I still don't know a whole lot of the characters/trees. I am having a debate with myself whether to play again as Logan or Sam B. I hear Logan is more intuitive and powerful later on but difficult earlier in the game, whereas Sam B. is reletively easy to play thoughout the game but a bit of a bore. I'm not real sure about those claims and every website/youtube seems to have differing comments about either. And I know a lot of people claim "just pick one and roll with it, pick the one that feels better." but I am a college student and my gaming time is valuable to me. I would prefer not to waste time on a character that turns out to be boring or too difficult later/earlier in the game only to have to replay the same chapters over with another character.

My main question is, who would you prefer for first full play-through with? Who would you recommend with pros/cons? Thanks all.

Sam gets health regen and basically breaks the game.
Never liked the idea of playing a "throwing weapons" character because removing my only source to fight back seems pretty dumb.

I picked Sam my first time, becuase I really wanted to make the game feel like a true zombie apocalypse game

There's always going to be more blunt instruments around, and since that's Sam's main...

Sam. Blunt weapons ftw. It really is broken that essentially the "tank" of the game also specializes in the most useful weapons(imo). Who do you voodoo, *****?!

I haven't played the game since it originally came out, so no idea if any of this got fixed with patches or anything, but Logan is a liability.

Let's say hypothetically you find a really sweet weapon. You're playing a class that specializes in chucking that weapon at foes. If you want the weapon back, you have to pick it up. So what happens when you chuck your really sweet weapon into an inaccessible area? What happens when you chuck your really sweet weapon and then can't find it? What happens when you chuck your really sweet weapon and one of your Co-Op partners proceeds to pick it up? What happens when you chuck your really sweet weapon and the game decides to have it glitch into the corpse of the target and you can no longer pick it up? What happens when you chuck your really sweet weapon and then die before you get the chance to retrieve it? What happens when you chuck your really sweet weapon and are forced to leave the area by additional enemies before you're able to pick it up? What happens when you chuck your really sweet weapon, then realize you don't have a backup weapon?

I think you get my point.

Anyway, I'd suggest Sam B. (blunt weapons) or Xian Mei (bladed weapons). Purna is... alright... during the game's final act when firearms and ammunition are a bit more common, but she's pretty worthless prior to that compared to Sam B. and Xian Mei (who both continue to be effective even in that final act).

As for what I personally played, I played as Xian Mei. Blunt weapons if you fail to repair them will shatter and be destroyed permanently, regardless of their rarity or level of badassness. This doesn't happen with bladed weapons.

Logan seems useless because its extremely easy to have your wepons glitch out after you throw them at an enemy.

Played as Sam because of his blunt weapons speciality. I wanted blade weapons, but don't like playing as girls, so I didn't have much choice. Went well all throughout the game. Don't think I ever had any problems.

Sam B. is the easiest character to play. Logan isn't that difficult if you just kick people in the head and then use blunt weapons (they are sort of his secondary speciality). Xian Mei is probably the toughest character to play because of her low health. Purna isn't too bad and is best either in co-op for the stat boosts or when facing other humans, where using melee weapons will get you shot in the face.
