This is just my personal opinion, but it seems to me that Dead Island is ripping off the Dead Rising franchise.
A few examples that I've noticed are:
Use virtually anything as a weapon
Leveling up to get new skills for your character (Skill tree in Dead Island)
Combine weapons (I recently saw a picture of an electrified Machete, plus it said so in an interview)

Few points, but they are what make Dead Rising Dead Rising and not any other zombie game.

Not in the slightest, 90% of zombie games / shows are the goddamn same thing, don't expect different, really, don't.

The main reason behind the more worldly functionality coming into play with zombie games is simply put, as it being finally doable fiscally.

Nah.

They're both zombie-based action games. There are bound to be some similarities. It's a bit like if you were to say Sam and Max was ripping off The Longest Journey.

Besides, the game isn't even out yet. At least wait until they bust out the Zombrex.

Nah, dead rising sucked. It was way too comical for a zombie game. And the story was terrible even as far as zombie games go. I seriously hope its not that bad.

Rising makes items out of scraps.
Does that mean they have ripped off point and click adventures?
Rising has rpg elements.
fallout? borderlands? anyone?
Besides, there are youtube videos of early Dead Island design way back in 2007. Long before anyone even knew about Rising.
And i for one, am looking forward to what Dead Island does with the genre.
From Wikipedia:
Dead Rising (デッドライジング Deddo Raijingu?) is an action-adventure, survivor horror video game, developed by Capcom and produced by Keiji Inafune. It was released on August 8, 2006 exclusively for the Xbox 360 video game console.

August 8, 2006.

But you know this is just my point of view, I didn't, nor don't, mean to get anyone mad.

The more games like dead rising the better, really. I'd hope future games like dead rising improve the NPC survivors AI. I.E finding shelter, moving place to place and joining up with other NPCS, maybe.

I know alot of that would be a nightmare and maybe impossible to code. But that's what i hope for in future games.

I don't feel like it's ripping off Dead Rising, and I'll probably love this game about 600,000 times more than Dead Rising as long as they don't do ridiculous timing throughout the entire game. I didn't enjoy DR at all to be fair. Maybe it just wasn't my type of game, but seriously, some of the timed challenges - or the whole timing of the entire thing - drove me up the wall.

I wanted to spend more time levelling up because challenges were getting too difficult with my character, then I didn't have time to do that. I kept going with the challenges but I was too weak and not upgraded enough to make it through half of them. So I went back to trying to level up - but ran out of time. AGHHHH!

To be fair loads of zombie games probably have the same principle ideas and functions and hey, if it didn't work it wouldn't sell surely?

I love it. I'm psyched to see this game come out.

Dead Rising: "Third person view". Running around in a mall.

Dead Island: "First person view". Running around a island. = (Propely closer to Valves "Left for dead 1-2" in the first person combat).

No. It's not ripping off Dead Rising.
The fact that you can use anything as a weapon is just something that games should have realised ages ago when you're helplessly defending yourself against something because you ran out of bullets but there is a perfectly good plank of wood or a brick laying on the floor next to you.
Using anything as a weapon is a feature that survival games in particular have brought to our attention. The silent hill games had a good start by letting us pick up TVs, broken brooms, a telephone, candles.. ect. And now more games are doing it and they are VERY welcome!
As for Leveling-Up.. Almost every game offers that one way or another. And skills trees are better!
And combining weapons = FUN$ FUN$ FUN$!

I think it's too early to make judgement calls about whether it's an uninspired knock-off or not. I'd say let's wait until the game's released, then the comparisons can begin.

Also, it's worth noting that the game has been in development since at least 2007, if not earlier.

I'm really looking forward to Dead Island, and I didn't really enjoy Dead Rising, due to the absurd time limit the game had.
The idea behind 'everything is a weapon' is really good. It'd be fun to beat a zombie's head in using that half-a-brick you refused to grab before when you still had bullets left for your pistol.

All due respect to the genre but most if not all horror games take ideas from one another.

Zombie games are known for scavaging weapons and ammo as well as having to resort to melee. It's not stealing if it's something they're inspired by. As long as they do their best to create something unique, I don't give a rats ass what other games it may have elements from.

Who gives a shit? You'll still buy it and play it. -sigh-

Sorry that sounded rude but seriously, what does it matter?

Dead island hasn't even come out yet, there's been no gameplay footage as far as i know,if dead island ends up being better than dead rising will you complain that dead rising is being unoriginal when it *inevitably* ends up taking ideas from other games as it goes downhill?

I love Rising - shame it's terrible as an Xbox port. Also, it's from the same people who made the Gothic series, so it came before the most recent editions of Fallout (I'm presuming, don't hold me to that)

Oh didn't Dead rising come out in 2006? Meaning it must have been in development before that?

I wouldn't call it a clone in anyway. Just because it uses related features, doesn't mean it's the same game. It's like that game coming out on Xbox arcade which looks a lot like Minecraft (Very similar infact..) But it has a lot of different features, it's still its own game in its own respect.

it looks more like a Far Cry with a Zombie setting (which is promising)

still waiting for a real Zombie Apocalypse Simulation though (with survival elements like Visions of The Aftermath, Robinsons Requiem etc)

You should inform Capcom of this obvious plagiarism. Dead Island even has zombies in it, which were clearly invented for Dead Rising and nothing else at all. The characters even have arms and legs, what a rip off!

Hmm, first I read "Dead Island ripping off Dead Space" :p

Lets just wait for the game to be released, then we can start talking about rip-offs...
