Dead Rising am I missing something?

I receive my envelope from Gamefly in the mail. I finally decided to try out Dead Rising, a game that has been out for years and has quite a following. I love zombies and the promise of a mall sandbox where almost everything and anything can be used as a weapon to murder the mindless buggers is enough to catch my interest. I throw the game in and start. I play the opening of the game which I am assuming will set up the situation. (I'd like to take the time here to say Capcom has the worst character design ever.) Eventually after taking pictures from an helicopter I'm finally dropped off at the mall. go on to the roof to find a man with incredible long hair (ones again not very good design. -_-) and go into the mall. After I leave the security area another cut scene begins to play. I realize the game is trying to force story on me so I simply push it away like a nagging dog. So after it takes me a while to find a trigger sequence (no idea why it was right there!) I do the little great escape thing back to the security room. I leave again to finally begin the part of the game I was waiting for....ZOMBIE SLAUGHTER. The game tried to have story constant walkie-talkie ringing, a bunch of updating side quest I consistently ignored, an annoying other photographer who kept telling me to take pictures of him (to which I replied by shooting him in the face.....he survived.) I was having a delightful time checking my watch counting down the hours till I had to go up to the heliport running around killing zombies in my short shorts and my megaman helmet with a plastic sword. Since I shot that photographer a few times, he retaliated and my health was low. So as I go to swipe at a zombie he decides to walk in my way. I hit him and he hit back killing me. I wasn't the bit phased until I learned the game makes you start back at a save. I didn't save the game since the game taught me how to in the beginning. After this I threw the game back in the envelope and mailed it away assuming I have had my peak of fun with the game.

So the ultimate question after torturing you with all that I have wrote.......was there something I was missing or was this pretty much the game?

Yup, that was it. Honestly, I don't see what else could draw to the game. Timed escort missions? Really? They need to hunt down who came up with that idea and keep them from reproducing.

That is pretty much the game. There is a story that you can play through, but obviously you can choose to ignore it. To be honest, I still enjoy the game, and play it every so often, so I suppose I'm getting my money's worth out of it

The save issue is a big problem for me though. I would much prefer a system like that in Fallout 3, where you can choose to save at any time when paused, but the game also autosaves when you go from one area to the next

Regardless, I still find the game fun, and am seriously considering buying Dead Rising 2 when it's come out

The game insulted me, after I picked up a mannequin it gave me a gun which caused me to dropped the mannequin like I want to use a boring gun!

I'll probably GF the second one, I hope they add to the items because I did have fun for the hour I was alive.

I'm not really much of zombie killer myself. I don't find much fun in mindlessly killing thousands of zombies, so I actually did the story. Got the best ending. Beat the extra day. Unlocked Infinity Mode. Got pissed that it was actually "survival" mode. Sold the game.

Eh, it's not for everyone. There are really two ways to play the game. Well... three, I guess.

1) Go nuts. Ignore the story. Ignore the side missions. Kill zombies. I imagine this must get old after awhile, but it can be fun short term.

2) Do the story. See the different endings. Try to unlock the secret additional 24 hours.

3) Panic mode. See above, but also take all the side missions. Since missions have a countdown timer to them, trying to save everyone while getting the story gets a bit nuts at points.

In options 2 and 3, the zombies become less "the point" and more "the obstacle" which is kind of what I think they were intended to be. When you need to be on the other side of the mall in a minute and a half, you find yourself getting more creative with your travel options. Or you just use the parking garage, I guess. I went with option 3, but if you do that, be ready for the horrendous escort AI. I recommend option 2 for most folks.

Yeah the whole 1 save thing kinda did it for me too. I like to follow the story and save often, something that Dead Rising didn't let me do.

I gave up after trying to get into it twice. It was fun for about an hour but then I got bored and couldn't be done with the stress.

Besides, escort/protection missions? NO, NO and uh... NO!

The only part I had difficulty with was the scene later on when it's you versus a motorcycle. That was the only time I noticed the annoying lack of convenient saving. However, this was not enough to stop me from playing the game all the way through (yes I got to and killed Mr. I have a tank, what now *****?).

I also love the ending credits music. It fits the theme of the game's story so well.

I never actually bothered with the storyline until I had levelled up significantly and done pretty much everything else there was to do achievement-wise. Just going through the mall looking for decent weapons and finding interesting ways to kill zombies was fun enough, but the story is pretty random and doesn't always make sense (especially all of the 'twists'). The save system really messed things up and having to escort the incredibly inept survivors aaaaaaaaaall the way to the security room was just ridiculous even when you thought you were prepared.

I didn't have any gripes about character designs though, it's an old game now so obviously didn't push the graphics front all that much compared to newer titles. The only annoying thing was that they only made a few models for the zombies, so whilst you could have dozens of shamblers nibbling your ankles in screen at once, you'd have groups of them clad in hawaiian shirts. Hopefully that is different in the second game, though I don't know whether I'll bother with it just yet.

edit: Oh, and the aiming system for guns was awful. I dislike having to stop and stand still to aim properly, even if you could argue that it is more realistic.

The game is pretty fun to start out with, but unfortunately begins to suffer from getting old quickly. I feel like a lot of the stores are just copy-pasted (how many children's clothing and you stores do you need?). Beyond that, about three hours in, you eventually get bored and put the game away.

I actually know of nobody who has finished the game... at all.

Same here, the game suffers from being advertised as one thing (Ultra Mall Zombie Sandbox) but being something else (An actually game with a story.)

there was more to it than that if you tried the story and went round rescuing people, but even the most ardent fan has to admit dead risings save game system was horribly broken.

if you jusgt wanted to run round hitting shit then fine, take a few photos of the zombies too, if you get a shot down a female zombies cleavage or up her skirt you even get a bonus! (dont ask me how I discoverded this, you would not believe me anyway.)

The only other truly broken thing in the game was the escaped convicts in the jeep, which made getting to the otherside of the mall nigh impossible, other than that i thought the game was fine, and what you get from it depends on what you try to acheive.

Oh God, I forgot about the Jeep. That thing took my friend and I an hour to get through. We actually made it past them one time, got as far as literally mowing down the other zombies, and then wound up getting shot as they made another pass at us.

Agreed, escaped convicts in jeeps? That sounds absolutely evil.
