What breaks a game for you to the point where you refuse to play it anymore OR ever again?

Dealbreakers for me for the day, usually only things like latency or a particularly challenging and frustrating task will make me put down the mouse / controller.

Dealbreakers for life? Broken controls and cheats. If I can't control the game the way I feel I should be able to (within reason) I can't be bothered. Also, sometimes when I pop cheats into the game (long ago) I could never bring myself to play again, just didn't feel the same after, not as fun.

I can deal with just about everything game devs can throw at me. ....Except annoying 12 year old JRPG characters.

GRITTY REALISM.

I don't want to have to drink a liter of water every couple of hours, and eat some jerky or risk losing health. I play video games to GET AWAY from all that crap.

Broken gameplay, pretty much. This can manifest itself in bugs, shitty controls, overpowered enemies, or an overpowered player character.

A close second is the stereotypical 12 year old JRPG girl. Their voices make me want to claw my eardrums out.

The last time I stopped playing a game was terrible mechanics. The specific example was in a third person shooter. There were enemies that were immune to long range attacks and had to be meleed. Ok, not a bad mechanic. It is a nice change of pace since I can kill everything in a room in 3 sec with a gun. Wait, this level has those enemies exclusively and is 50m long at the very least? Ok, I can deal with th...o wait, their is no melee system to speak of in this game. Fuck. That. Shit.

The loss of hours of playing. Just putting a quick-save key into a game doesn't do it.

Really losy porting, crappy controls and no save points combined with too few autosaves. Yep, I think that sums it up pretty good. Oh, and never forget: Same ammo to all your weapons. Yes, Deus Ex 2, I'm looking at you! *shakes fist*

Broken, terrible and overall very bothersome to play multiplayer. Case in point: Modern Warfare 2.

Shitty, uncreative and not-thought-out story line. Case in point: Modern Warfare 2.

Gimmicky, boring and a waste of time side feature. Case in point: Modern Warfare 2 Spec-Ops.

I think Modern Warfare 2 was the first game I got into that I actually stopped playing due to its horrible game design.

Oh, another deal breaker: insane amounts of DLC that you can't not have and can't deactivate. I am speaking, of course, of Team Fortress 2. Oh TF2, my sweet prince. . . what happened. . . You used to be my favorite game, I played professionally with you, I have over 2000 hours in you and. . . now I can't look at you.

Extreme difficulty to the point of frustration. I play games to have fun, so frustration is the opposite of that, end of story. That's why I stopped playing Super Meat Boy and Street Fighter IV.

If I just cant get into the story or care whats going on, like the witcher I spend a few hours playing before I realised

"Hold on...what am I ACTUALLY doing here? who are thease people? whats going on??"

or if the imersion is just that bad(and above), Oblivion was horribly laughable, and no I dont think I should have to Mod the living hell out of a game to get a decent experience

Far cry 2 had great imersion as for the plot...I just sort of lost track of what the hell I was doing other than killing the enitre population of south africa (I mean seriously By the time I was halfway through the civil war should have been over)

Borderlands...just too bland on its own, a little more NPC interation would have been nice

Kake and lynch I played for 5 minutes before I realied...yeah I dont care about eather of you assholes

^ This.

Or a boss that you get so close to defeating, you can TASTE victory, and you get a super shitty move that destroys your character(s).

The Game Over screen after a cheap loss generally ends in Rage Quit... or a broken controller

A console port that feels like a console port. Especially if the devs say you should be using an Xbox controller to play it and use that as their excuse for not making a decent control scheme for the PC.
