Summers hit the uk recently, and its hot. Very hot. In previous years I dealt with this by plenty of water and gratious use of hand fans. Money issues however, means I cant use either of these two methods.

So tell me escapist, how do you deal with days where the heats overbearing?

Okay, maybe I'm utterly spoiled by drinkable tap-water, but is water really that expensive in the UK?

We have drinkable tap water too, we are a first world country after all. The issue is that water companies tend to charge a lot for such a service, and bottled water is pretty damn expensive too. So we do have the luxury, but it costs an arm and a leg of sweat :p

Anyway, yesterday I did what was probably the silliest thing possible to deal with the hot weather, which was eat very hot spicy chicken, shish kebab, and curry, in a pub (to be fair, it was a family meal because my cousin from New Zealand is travelling Europe, the UK, and the USA, and she's staying with us for a week - this was basically a treat for her). Either way, lots of hot spicy food, and alcohol, does not a cooled down Trivun make. Ah well, if I dehydrate at least I might have a case against the pub owner (sod the fact he's a friendly family acquaintance, if I can get a hefty payout then so be it!).

I deal with it by sitting in front of a fan all day and drinking water with lots of ice in it, it's been horridly hot today.

Basements are almost always nice and cool. Hanging out in air conditioned stores when the heat gets too terrible. Parks with shade and good breezes. If you want to stay in the house, just hang around in your underwear. It sounds creepy but if it's really hot it'll help. Another good method is after you take a shower, air dry yourself as much as possible. Wet some paper towels or some clean rags and drape them around your neck. It'll work for a short time to keep you cool.

Fill something with cold water, up to your shins or somewhere a bit higher. Stand in it. The blood that goes thorugh it will be cooled, circulating cold blood throughout your body.
Temporery warmth reduction.

anything above 24 degrees is an annoyance and too hot for me. recently it is not hot where i live it is just humid and i say FUCK IT! if I feel sticky after talking a walk around the block, there is a problem!
soo I stay inside with a fan and very little lighting on and the blinds shut so the room does not overheat.
also being in the lowest part of your house ( really only applies to people living in a multi floored house.) I sometimes even hang out in my basement because it is underground.

Living in Toronto when ever there is a heat wave going on, the news always tells people to stay in public air conditioned places to stay cool like libraries. and considering the smog we get courtesy of the people down south it make days seem ten times worse! just be glad you don't have to deal with smog.

so gross!

The water in the UK is, for the most part, drinkable. I stick a load of sun cream on and wear sunglasses. It doesn't stop me burning however and I can't afford after sun lotion so I just use moisturiser and keep the burnt area cool. You could put any drinks you do have in the fridge and avoid eating salty food to avoid dehydration. Avoid direct sunlight and stay in the shade. If you drive open the windows instead of putting on the air conditioning. Go swimming if possible.

hibernation. the heat drains my energy and it makes it very easy to just sleep through it. actually it makes it very difficult to do anything else, i guess.

being that my room i have nicknamed mount doom since it gets so hot I usually have my wall ac running and both my fans running and lounge around in as little as possible. And I have a few gallon jugs of water with me cause I get dehydrated too easily. Take advantage of breezes.....Hell I've been known to sit in my bikini top and a pair of shorts in my car with my windows down just reading in my driveway just for the breeze.

I've been dealing with it by sticking to my leather computer chair... Not a very good solution but there isn't much I can do about it...

Also opening up the back door of my house, a window between the lounge and the kitchen and the kitchen window allows for a gust of wind to go through the main room of my house without the risk of any door slammage...

I really really dislike warm weather... (I'm hot blooded so tend to wear a T-shirt and jeans in snow and the like without getting cold) luckily my college is air-conditioned. Unluckily I break up for summer holidays in 2 days...

Open those windows to cool down...and swat those invading flies to get all hot again.

I don't envy you guys in North America over the hot weather, boy, you need air-con just to function! . We tend to be air-con skeptics here in the UK, until we experience some glorious Summer days in North America.

Fellow Brit here. Lots of water and cold baths. Can't afford that? Get a bowl of ice, put it in front of a fan, blast it at you. Just one fan will do the trick, so nothing too expensive

All you need to deal with heat is sticky tape and ice cubes.

Also, even if you are on metered water drinking 10 pints is cheaper than flushing the toilet. Unless you are fussy and need bottled water.

It been a gorgeous day down here on the south coast. Spent most of the day outside, sun-bathing with a book and my iPod. Now it's clouded over though so I have a feeling there's going to be a massive ass storm pretty soon.

Sit around with a cold beer and do nothing. Then when the sun goes down make a fire. Occasionally make fire and cook meat over it. Manly manly things to do.
