I can only really speak for BFBC onwards, but from those games, none have featured a free for all mode. Closest you can get to is Squad Deathmatch, but even then, you still have a team, albeit a small one.

Frankly, an FFA mode would really go against the core design of Battlefield. The games are designed around the squad, and how the different classes interact, and you just cant do that in a mode like that.

I haven't played them all, but none that I did play had that.

There may have been custom servers running a FFA deathmatch mode though.

No, there has never been a "true" FFA Deathmatch in any Battlefield game. However, there have been two things which have come very close and are probably what your friend is remembering;

Squad Deathmatch

Team Deathmatch, except instead of 16+v16+ it is instead 4v4v4v4, or four teams of four.

Gun Game

Like, the Counterstrike mode of the same name, the goal was to get two kills with every weapon ending in a knife melee kill. This mode was played in teams of two and was usually 2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2.
