I have heard very good things about Persona 3 and 4, although I am yet to play them myself.

Well, if you like Pokemon's style( I.e:Not dependent on time.), then I'd personally recommend Final Fantasy X on the PS2.

However, you may or may not enjoy it, as it's one of those games where you either like it or hate it just because of the story. Still, I enjoyed it , so you may to.

For the PS2, I'd suggest Tales of the Abyss and Final Fantasy X. Both very good games with fun, good storylines. Tales of the Abyss has a more anime-based aesthetic, and uses real-time combat. It also has the weaker of the two storylines, but I prefer the characters to Final Fantasy X's cast. FFX is... well... a Final Fantasy game. Turn-based, rather comparable to Pokemon in its combat, with a touch more realism in its visuals (and it's ridiculously pretty for a comparably older game). I've also heard good things about the Persona series, but haven't played them myself.

For the 360, I'd look into Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, or Resonance of Fate.

If you liked the Kingdom Hearts games, you should like the Dark Cloud games and Rogue Galaxy. As far as turned based goes, the Persona and Xenosaga games are very good (but hard, so keep that in mind). Those are all that immediately pop to mind.

I highly recommend the Xenosaga trilogy if you like your sci-fi operas long and complex. The characters are all pretty memorable and the game developers kept learning from previous iterations, making Xenosaga 3 a blend of the best of the previous 2 in game play, pacing and art style.

For better or worse, the game is in-game cutscene heavy. There's about 8 hours of cutscenes per title so if you are not in it for the story, I'd suggest not getting it. I absolutely loved it, though.

It's been a few years since I played it and I still have very fond memories of it. I'll probably replay the trilogy in a year or two from now just to experience it all over again.

Many have mentioned Final Fantasy X. I'll leave it at that.

If you liked Kingdom Hearts, I can recommend Star Ocean: Till End of Time. It doesn't have the same platforming (or any, really), but it has very active combat.

Rogue Galaxy. Another Tri-ace game, and I had a lot of fun with this one. Very cartoony and extremely predictable (except one twist I genuinely didn't see coming), but pretty darn good fun.

Persona 3 is pretty good. I liked its depth, but ended up hating the game. A lot of people I know liked it.

Megaman X Command Mission. ...shut up, I liked it. Turn-based but input-sensitive combat, fairly lame but still fun story, lots of bright colors and interesting aesthetics... plus it's Megaman X.

Radiata Stories was pretty good too. It has a little "party-collection" aspect to it, and combat somewhat similar to Star Ocean.

I'd agree with most of you say because Xenosaga is easily one of my favourite JRPG trilogies ever (went out of my way to do research on their source mythology too!) However I think you may understand the second falls as being the weakest of the franchise, an irritating combat system and barely anything told or explained. However regardless of my detestment (ha testament!) of the second game the third game won me over in forgiveness and more.

Yeah totally give the Xenosaga trilogy a shot, Persona, FFX, Rouge Galaxy, Star Ocean Till the End of Time, DOT HACK, Radiata Stories, Kingdom Hearts (all of them). that's all I got!

Tales of the Abyss (as in, from the Tales of Symphonia series of games) is awesome, as is Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. Don't let the 'tactical' RPG tagline put you off; it is really, really funny and addictive. To go even more retro: Klonoa on the PS1. It'll definitely play on your PS2, and should cost about as much as an envelope. Plus, despite the graphics, it is a genuinely involving and well-written game.

A few people have mentioned it but it bears repeating Persona 3 FES/4,hands down two of the greatest games for the PS2. Hell any of the Shin Megami Tensei games for the PS2 are fucking awesome if a bit of a ***** to find. Though It's been advised to pass up the first Raidou Kuzunoha game,I've never played it but I hear it's pretty poor. I have played it's sequel,Raidou Kuzunoha vs King Abaddon, and it's very enjoyable.

Of the Tales of games Tales of the Abyss is preferable over Legendia but both have their strengths and weaknesses.Abyss's loading times are terrible and the combat is a tad bit overly complicated (still very fun none the less) but the characters are excellent and it has one of the better stories for a Tales game. Legendia is the one of the more despised entries of the series(along with Tales of Tempest) but honestly I found it enjoyable. The requirements to gain new spells is involves needless grinding and the chibi art style and story may be irksome but it's still a tales game so the characters are at least likable and interact well.Plus the soundtracks is one of the series best. Abyss is probably superior but Legendia is has it's own charm. Also while on the Tales of series, Vesperia for the 360 is amazing;fun combat, great characters, and plenty to do.

Finally Wild Arms 3(PS2),an awesome Wild West flavored RPG with an excellent cast and one of the best female leads in an JRPG. It's loaded with side quests and clever puzzles. However the Sonar system, which is used to find new towns and dungeons can be annoynig but never really stopped the game form being a blast.

Ar Tonnelico 1 and 2.

J-RPGs, even though rather *puts on hipster glasses* unknown in europe, they re outright stunning in their style and appeal, not to mention their soundtrack that is dropdead gorgeus. Not much more to add to that.

Tales of the Abyss would be my first recommendation. I'm only a little over halfway through, myself, but I'm loving it.

Disgaea and Kingdom Hearts are also pretty good, and rather divergent, games.

FFX would be perfect for you in that there is no timer for the battles and you have all the time in the world to pick your moves.

other PS2 greats include shadow hearts, Disgaea, Persona4, Rogue Galaxy, and Grandia 2 amongst others.
Even though it's not a JRPG you might like Lord of the Rings: The 3rd age, which is basically FFX with a lotr skin and a bitchin' soundtrack.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King.

Then again I don't think enough people know about it.

Repeating a few, but Final Fantasy X, Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga, SMT Nocturne/Lucifer's Call, Persona 3 + 4, and Disgaea Hour of Darkness. Seeing as you like Pokemon and turn-based, you would probably enjoy the Persona games above all. -evil laugh-

If you want strong themes of death, go for Persona 3 first.

If you prefer strong themes of identity and sexuality, Persona 4.

1. Everything by Atlus. This means Persona 3, Persona 4, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne and both Digital Devil Saga games. Haven't played the Raidou games, but those are more real-time and weird.

I think you'll particularly enjoy the combat of Nocturne and Persona 4, since Shin Megami Tensei uses some of the same ideas as Pokemon (despite preceding the franchise by quite a few years). You gather monsters/personas and fight with tactical turn-based combat. There's also always an intriguing plot, great design and amazing music.

Persona 3 is also good, but the version on the PS2 doesn't offer full control of your party members, which is a bit of an impediment.

You should also consider that Nocturne is considered to be balls hard by modern standards, so if you're unfamiliar with tough JRPGs then Persona 4 might be a better entry point to the series. Unless you dislike wordy games, that is. Compared to Persona 4, Nocturne is a silent film. They're both very well-written, but P4 by its nature has more opportunities for dialogue and characterization.

2. Anything by NIS. This means Disgaea, Soul Nomad, etc. These are more SRPG than traditional JRPG, but they're fully turn-based and have plenty of tactics and humor. A lot of fun.

3. (Xbox 360) Tales of Vesperia. Feels like a completely unashamed tribute to oldschool JRPGs in the FFIX vein. Despite that, it has some interesting real-time combat. Great characters too. On the surface, everything you hear about them sounds simplistic and cliched, but they're so much better than what you're picturing. Trust me.

4. (Xbox 360) Resonance of Fate. Tactical RPG. In a way, this is like Valkyria Chronicles shrunk down with more combat options and customizations available to each of your three units. The story is completely impenetrable and convoluted, but the characters are so fun that you probably won't care. Combat takes some getting used to, at which point it goes from "okay" to "fantastic".
