After seeing the "Basics Tutorial" of Gas Powered Game's soon to be released Demigod, I got this feeling that it seems like the game essentially took the wildly popular Warcraft 3 multiplayer map Defense of the Ancients (DOTA), redid the graphics, added a commander player to each side and implemented a player profile RPG mechanic. I am not saying that they didn't do anything new, as the persistent experience gain that carries over between battles is certainly something different and I am not saying that DOTA is by an means a bad game (yes I understand it's part of Warcraft 3, but for all intensive purposes DOTA has differentiated itself to the point where it is a separate game in its own right). Lets however look at some of the uncanny similarities:
1) Single Hero controlled by each player with an emphasis on micro-managing and utilizing the specific role of the hero
2) Focus on destroying a single building shared by all opposing players
3) Pre-placed towers designed to prevent rushing and emphasize hero combat with non-playable characters (npc being termed "reinforcements" in Demigod and "creeps" in DOTA)
4) Small amount of item collection
5) Starting back at Level 1 every match
Beyond this, I find that some of the changes that don't match up with DOTA, do match up with another popular Scenario call Footmen Frenzy. Specifically:
1) Choosing between leveling up your hero and upgrading your troops
2) Being provided with constant reinforcements that you can control
3) Minimal Item gathering
4) Controlling a single hero which you level up and define to fill a more or less specific role
This is just my observation based on trailers. I fully advocate waiting for the final game before making a call, but I felt this was the vibe I got from the game based on the current information available. What is your guys/girls thoughts?
