So, I finally got a PS3, and my first game was Demon's souls, I'm playing a wanderer and I've died in the area after the tutorial vanguard (god damn evil squid) about 15 times, is the remainder of this game going to be that hard? or do I just suck?

You just suck.

Nah, only kidding! The game is 'considered' hard because unlike most current games it does not hold your hand and guide you along, gently patting you on the head while whispering reassuring comments into your ears.

If somethings hard enouph you technically can't suck at it which I'm pretty sure is the case with demons souls.

Demon's Souls is infamously known as the hardest game on the playstation 3 so you don't suck but it's not going to get any easier either.

You'll get used to it. It's more or less guaranteed that you're going to die a lot in that game; the idea is to learn from your mistakes and then not repeat them. Looking back, though, the first level was probably one of the more frustrating levels.

No it's pretty much the hardest game I know of on the PS3 and one of the hardest I own. It never gets any easier, and every time you die it's back to the beginning of the level for you.

you're in for a tough ride. I even gave up on it. It was the first time I gave up on anything. This might be because I unexpectedly got God Of War, but you get the point.

Think that's bad? Wait until you get to New Game+ :p

Just play cautiously. Block attacks, evade, all that jazz. I can't tell you how many deaths I've avoided by playing it safe.

The game doesn't necessarily get easier.. you just get far better. Which I suppose is getting easier unto itself, but now I'm just talking in circles.

Eh, it gets a bit easier once you've beaten the first boss and can actually use the souls you gather to level up.

The gamee can be pretty hard, but once you get used to the mechanics it's that good sort of hard, I'm about 3/4 of my first play through as a Knight and about 1/4 of my way through with a Royal.

If you're having trouble you may want to start as a different class, the Wanderer is a brutal class to start with, weak starting armor and low health. I'd recommend starting with either a Knight or Temple Knight. They can absorb much more damage than any of the other classes due to their heavier armor. I'd personally recommend the Knight out of the two because better starting armor and more balanced stats that will let you easily branch out into whatever specialty you prefer where the TK clearly favors Miracles over Soul Arts early on. However, he does start with a heal miracle.

Royal could also be a good starting class but has some sharp downsides for beginners. Royals don't hold up well while taking enemies close up and head on. Instead the class relies on rolling for evasion and ranged magic attacks. This could be a problem at the start as MP is in fairly limited supply and it can be easy to be quickly overcome when facing more than one enemy. If you do try this class I'd recommend not soloing until you've got a few spells under your belt and maybe picked up a decent sword and shield to fall back on in a pinch.

In the first real level, make sure you get the Cling Ring. Once you kill the blue eyed knight, walk past the fog gate he's protecting and fight your way down through the tower there, you'll end up back near the beginning, in the path you just opened up is the ring on the body. When wearing that right your health is only 3/4 instead of 1/2 when your a phantom.

Hopefully that helps make your quest a bit easier. Also if you want a good resource on item information and how to get good equipment and anything else you could need for this game I recommend demonssouls.wikidot.com

Your really not supposed to be able to defeat the vanguard at the beginning of the game, it's possible, but a complete newbie to the game won't know how to effectively dodge the demon's attacks and whatnot until you have more experience with the actual game, and your ready to make an alternate character.

I always have the mindset that the game is never unfair, when you die it's your own damn fault ( I include myself in this train of thought so I'm not picking on anyone) I can chalk up every single one of my game deaths (not by invading black phantoms) to my own error in judgment or thinking "yeah screw strategy I'll just run in mashing heavy attack like I do in every other hack 'n slash" since every enemy has a set pattern to their attacks which if you learn how to dodge effectively you can stay out of danger most of the time.

After learning these lessons I'm currently on my fourth playthrough, and am still having a blast, and it's still the only initial purchase for my ps3 that I haven't traded away and probably won't (unless they cut off online support).

And if you think the game is hard now, just wait till new game+, if you come to a stand still in the game I recommend using the demon's souls wiki, also one thing that I learned after new game+ heavy armor is more of a hindrance than a advantage since you can't effectively roll dodge out of enemy attacks quickly enough, trust me when I say dodging save more health than the armor boost, it also weighs you down so you can't take all that shiny loot enemies drop from time to time. Of course you can wear whatever you want, and some of the heavy armor looks kick ass (gloom armor in particular).

TL;DR
Yes the game is difficult but not unfair.
Stay away from the heavy armors (unless you just have to have it) and stick to the leather armors they allow moderate defense while allowing you to keep your maneuverability.

That was a "supposed to die" battle. The rest of the game is almost that hard, though. But that's the fun of it.

No.. the game is just hard, restart as a knight for your first play through he has the best balance of equipment and starter weapons, it will make the game easier but it still hard so be cautious trust me beating the game makes you feel most triumphant especially when you beat it a second time.
