"Dead Boy's Poem" or "Creek Mary's Blood" by Nightwish are all I can think of at the moment.

Depending on the exact mood you're in, "Lamento Eroico" by Rhapsody might fit.

Radiohead is a big one. Pretty much most of their songs.
David Gilmour's "On an Island" album.
"Wishing on the same moon" - Powderfinger

Bohemian Rhapsody (no need to mention band) always brings tears to my eyes.

Pretty much everything by Radiohead, The Cure, Muse and Placebo is soft and sad.

I'd recommend listening to the album Grace Submerged by Octavia Sperati, (a goth/doom metal band).
Or if you only want one song from it, I'd say "Dead End Poem". Or maybe "Submerged".

These might also be what you're looking for:
Emilie Autumn - "Marry Me"
Marilyn Manson - "Count to 6 and Die"
Nine Inch Nails - "Hurt"
The Dillinger Escape Plan - "Mouth Of Ghosts"
Slipknot - "Danger - Keep Away"
EDIT: Almost forgot... Smashing Pumpkins - "1979"

You should also get the Donnie Darko soundtrack. :p

the beginning is the end is the beginning by smashing pumpkins. It's ok, I don't get the title either... I think it's pretty depressing but i'm not sure if it's what you're looking for.
Sorry >.<"

Street Spirit (Fade Out) By Radiohead , that song hypnotizes me somehow....
I just was on Pandora and I was listening to that song except it was by Eliza Lumley.. I'm unsure of which is better.

Many of these songs have a positive tone about the melody, but depressing lyrics. I'm straight going for depressing throughout, Street Spirit is a great example
Ya it really is a lovely song, great finger-picking. I just had to learn how to play it the first time i heard it.

That was really good, I didn't much like the singer. Wow, I'm really finicky. Oh wait, the screechiness is coming in. No. I don't like this anymore. (I'm typing this as I listen.)

I do like Slipknot though. Just not right now.

"Elanor Rigby", The Beatles.

Maybe it's just only me, but I get a bit sad listening to that.

Radiohead, too.

No! There is no hope for me! It's too depressing! No, wait...it's that song...

In all seriousness, thank you. I'm not the one asking for depressing songs, but that sent a shiver up my spine, especially at the ending.

I was about to suggest Xasthur, but then I remembered he doesn't fit the criteria of "depressing songs with mellow vocals and piano".

I find Insomnium-"In the Groves of Death" to be pretty damn depressing. You need to read along with the lyrics, though, as they're kinda hard to make out.
