Well, each of the three classes had two (and then three) sub-classes. There were distinct differences in those classes. For example, the Warlock Voidwalker had a Super that was basically a huge blast while the Sunsinger focused on spamming grenades. The Hunter Gunslinger used throwing knives and had a Super that allowed them a few extra powerful (1 hit kill on players and certain enemies) shot, and the Blade Dancer focused on melee and had a Super that allowed for powerful slashes. The Titan Defender could create a shield that couldn't be fired through and the Striker could use a powerful AOE attack. That was just a quick overview, but I think you might get the point.
Cool, did not know that. How much did the various class change gameplay? Are talking borderland level (everyone play essentially the same until they activate there ability every 10-20 sec) or more/less?
Well, every class had a grenade skill, melee skill, and a Super. It varied a bit. Each class could choose between 1 of three different grenades to chose from, and there was certainly some overlap in that. For example, I think at least two of the classes had a sticky grenade.
Each classes had similarities and differences. For example, Titans had more health, Warlocks recovered lost health faster, and Hunters were quicker and more agile. Hunters had a double jump, while Warlocks had a sort of float skill, and Titans had a skill that would give them a slight lift and then a small float effect.
Each melee skill was different. For example, the Voidwalker could use their melee and reduce the cool down on their grenades, while the Defender could kill enemies and gain a temporary shield. Each melee skill had three modifiers you could choose from. For example, the Hunter could choose one that would reset the cool down on their throwing knife, if they killed an enemy with a precision kill (usually a head shot).
Supers similarly had modifiers that you could choose. For example, the Sunsinger could actually revive themselves from the dead by using their Super. And the Striker could generate a shock-wave increasing the AOE of their Super.
And of course the classes all had different special skills that could be selected. The Sunsinger could make it so that they gained an additional grenade, or all of their abilities set enemies on fire. The Blade Dancer could be become invisible by crouching for a few seconds or regain health when they kill enemies with their melee strike or Super.
And, of course, various Exotic equipment also modified abilities. There was a helmet that made kills with the Voidwalker's Super reduce the cool down on their Super. Yes, that helmet was amazing and I fucking loved it. Hunters had boots that gave them a third jump.
So to answer your question, you wouldn't feel completely alien in a new class as the gun play is the same, but you might need to adjust how you use their special abilities.
