So anyone use Deveiant art? whats it like? whats the comunity like? is there actually good artwork there?

I like to draw so I thourght it might be a way to get feedback, though I dont do stuff that looks like manga/anime (I dont particually care for that stuff...mabye no because its bad, most of the time, because its just so annoyingly popular) Though I assume anyone actually looking at your stuff is hot or miss especially if its not manga looking

DeviantArt strikes a very narrow chord for me. While in some very specific contexts it is a very respectable community for posting artwork and having an internet social life, many of the techniques and systems on it are poorly governed, administrated and otherwise provided that other websites offer that's better. It would be fair to make the analogy of the Youtube of image hosting and commenting versus Vimeo or whatever-have-you elsewhere.
My greatest indignation is their policies regarding users who do not have paid-for premium accounts have the terms of service change without consent or notification, and then have the audacity to say that "DeviantArt loves [me]".

This is in addition to the overabundance of a generalization that can be readily made about many teenage young women and girls making unappealing attempts at anthropomorphic pop-culture figures, anime, pretentious poetry and unfunny web comics. But the mixture is usually about 7/10 "crap", 2/10 "pretty cool (I guess)" and 1/10 somethings as clever as this:

I was once very much into Deviant Art, but I grew away from it. Two good friends of mine were simply amazing and all I did was mainly write in the journal and occasionally post terrible photos and drawings. But being noticed on that thing is often difficult, some genuinely amazing pieces never get as much notification as others, sadly. And as for community, from what I've seen "cliques" or "They treat their own well". Not a particularly bad one, mind, just...oddly isolated.
And yet, I came back, made a new account and now have my slightly more professional pictures there. Sometimes people never learn.

I haven't had much trouble there. Someone did say my picture was traced, wich did strike a nerve after working over 5 hours on it in MS Paint.

The above youtube analogy is pretty good, there is some quality stuff there, but also a lot of crap and...strange stuff.

I see it like Newgrounds. It's not someplace I browse daily, but it is the central hub for its medium, and when I know about something specific by a certain author, I'll go there for it. (Remember that, people who view any and all flash animations on YouTube)

I'm on it...

But overall, it's about what you're there for, I've been there for 5 years now and sure it's a little slanted in favour of the cash-in 'Hi I draw cute wolves or anime you like, ain't that great!' artists.

But the occasional Original Character artist breaks through and their stuff is usually of high quality.

To think of three off the top of my head.

Delya,
Endling and
JollyJack.

I spend a good amount of time on there and I think it's ok. I don't upload to much, I usually just click about for some inspiration if I have art block. A lot of my friends are on there so it makes it easy to get feedback and to keep up on what they are doing. Plus I really like In The Machine's stuff. They make me laugh. DA is by no means the best, but it's alright.

The Artwork is good.

But 99% of the people who use it are either Wannabe tattoo artists wanting to get noticed or whiney emo / goths kids who all specialise in nothing but black hearts, cutesy Anime angels and poetic nonesense who use the bio pages more than the art pages.

Alternatively you will find a few good artist out there who genuinly deserve praise for sharing there work.
But the stereotype I describe above does flood every page of the once proud website.

There's plenty of good artwork on Deviant Art, and the community is generally helpful and supportive. If you do good, they will notice. If you don't, they'll let you know what the problem is.

But getting yourself noticed feels like pissing in the ocean a little. They get dozens of submissions a second, meaning your upload might not be on the homepage for more than a flash before it's gone.

I'm on it. I had an account under Cheesus333, but I deactivated that cause my friends were driving me mad with their talent and success. A few months later I came back to it and made a new one under Edamessiah. This time I just didn't add them.

I don't put much up there, and when I do it's mostly just game fan-art. But I only put stuff up when I think it's particularly good, then I later realise it isn't, so it deters me from uploading again. It's quite vicious.

It?s mixed.

It?s a big website so it can be rather difficult being seen, finding people and networking in general. I think it?s mostly because of how it?s set up, nothing about it really is very helpful with finding things.

Depending on who you do end up communicating with it can be pleasant or a bit of a *****. You also run the risk of tucking yourself away in the corner with people who only praise you. Getting critique on anything, actual real critique that will benefit you is difficult, if it's what your after at any point.

There are some really good artists on there, some amazing ones, mostly it?s a lot of teens taking snapshots and drawing stuff that isn?t too great. You?ll have to sift through it all. It?s a website with a lot of different people on it. If you just want somewhere to put your stuff and look at other peoples stuff, it?s pretty good at that. If you are looking for that and a place that?s helpful and has a lot of easy to find awesome artists, there are better places.

To sum it up, I think as an art website it has a general air of childishness, which might be good for you right now as it was for me for quite some time. Eventually I grew tired of it and moved on to a difference art website that I like a lot more.

Its cool to just go through and browse pictures sometimes. I usually head there if I have something specific I want to find. I never leave disappointed, though it might take sometime to sift through the stuff. Theres a lot of great artwork on there, but theres also a bunch of crap. Not that I am one to talk, but still.
