'Ello, DuoM here. Finally pulled myself away from Devil May Cry 4.
I'll call this a snap review. Reasons? I haven't beaten it yet but I feel obliged to share my experience with the many other posters here.
We'll start with gameplay-
It perfects the controls that were seen in Devil May Cry 3. However they packed some new things in. Nero's Devil Bringer (I refer to it as the right hand of doom) adds to the combo system but should be used typically at the finisher so it boosts the meter up higher. Also you can switch styles on the d-pad but I think that's Dante Only. Other than that, there's now a new currency outside of red orbs. Brave Souls are needed to purchase new skills and they can be earned by completing missions only.
Story -
From what I gather, this takes place before DMC 2 and after DMC 1. I won't spoil anything although the most I can get is that Nero is basically at the center of a very large conspiracy. THAT is all.
Sound -
Remember the hard rock from DMC3? Its here. Remember the creepy music? Yep, that's here too. However the switch is that there's opera singing as well and oddly enough it's a gret addition to the gothic adventure/action game.
Movies - I've separated this BECAUSE DMC has become a game that is know for its awesome cut scenes.
The guy who did the cut scenes for DMC3 returned along with the staff that worked on DMC3 as well. You will see more gun fighting, more sword play and more corny dialogue then you can shake the proverbial stick at. I do admit I look forward to playing the game as much as I like watching the cut scenes however I will concede that it does go a bit overboard in places. For some people this'll be like an over the top action film and others, will set the controller down and roll their eyes and groan.
Voice Acting - Has to be separated.
Dante's voice actor is back and he's playing the more grown up enigmatic Dante but you see classic bits of stuff for him in this game. Especially talking down to Nero. Nero is voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch, aka The Black Power Ranger, Vash the Stampede and recently Ichigo Kurosaki. Bosch's portrayal of Nero is good. He lends his more pissed off voice to a very confused character who only just wants to know what the hell is going on. The other voice actors, all add uniqueness to their characters, one even stutters (You'll hate him... TRUST ME!!!).
Overall - SUMMARY Read if you're not interested in reading the rest of this crap.
This game brings another nice action title into the breadth of video games and should hold all those crazed fans of stylized uber hard hack and slash satisfied until the holy grail of head trauma releases (Ninja Gaiden 2 for the uninformed). I personally bought the collectors edition simply cause I liked all the extra trimmings in a game as well that getting a free anime dvd with it (Worth 20 bucks if bought separately).
Buy or Rent? - Depends on the taste. If you're bored looking for some fun and mindless violence I'd say buy the game, you won't get disappointed and for that matter you might be pleasantly surprised.
(This is the 360 version btw, I've been reading around the PS3 version has a download on it that lowers the load time, I find that rather stupid considering it does nothing. Hope you all dig.)
