Yes yes, I know, this is another Devil May Cry thread after the whole "OMG DmC" fiasco, but let me lay my points down, because this is somewhat different...somewhat..
[hr]

[HEADING=2]Devil May Cry: A Legacy[/HEADING]

I'm going to start of with some back story here. The Devil May Cry series first started off as Resident Evil 4, and was headed by the Resident Evil series' director, Hideki Kamiya; somewhere down the line though, the project started making huge deviations from the main points of the RE franchise, so instead of scrapping the project entirely, a new game series for Capcom was born.

You played as Dante, a young half human/half demon devil hunter for hire. You had 2 goals within, be as stylish as possible, and try to stop the rise of the Demon Emperor Mundus, that your father sealed before you. Slowly but surely, Devil May Cry grew into a hit, and a must-own title for the PS2, and the fans were craving for more. So after the completion of the game, Kamiya left the project to work on the REAL Resident Evil 4 and later form Clover Studios, leaving the creation of Devil May Cry 2 with an entirely different team.

While it turned into an ok game in and of itself, Devil May Cry 2 was not exactly what the fans were asking for, with its vast differences and tones from the first game as well as its poor story. It has been for the most part, christened with the title of "worst title in the franchise", but for it's downfalls, it also introduced many main gameplay aspects, such as Bloody Palace, faster combat, and newer and unique combos attacks(such as Twosome Time, and Fireworks) which would later benefit greatly to the next title of the series.

Devil May Cry 3, again made with different team, Capcom takes a shot at explaining Dante's backstory, and ends up succeeding with flying colors. DMC3 is universally acclaimed, as its held on high for its difficulty, fun gameplay, flash, and story. More fans came pouring in, to live through Dante's beginning and tribulations, to slash and gun through missions and to be as stylish as possible.

After the high ground that DMC3 had set, it would be quite a task for DMC4 to try to live up to its older brother's reputation. While not doing nearly as well as DMC3, DMC4 allowed more new blood into the franchise by introducing a new character into the series, Nero, and by releasing its first entry into Next-gen with bold graphics and gameplay mechanics. Through Nero, you were allowed the use of the Devil Bringer, a demon infected arm, which allowed you to throw, grapple, or shield yourself with the various demons you came across. Still keeping with the DMC3 playstyle with a few tweaks, it gained its own little following within the series like all the other title had previously.

So, while Devil May Cry may have switched hands from time to time, each person adding their own new look onto the series, and adding more and more to the gameplay and overall mechanics, each one has still kept the same vibe of "cool" and "stylish" and has established Dante as an iconic video game character.

So basically, the main question here is, for fans and others alike is, what attracted you to the series? And which title is your favorite and why?

[HEADING=2]The Backlash[/HEADING]
So as most fans were, we were waiting for any news of a 5th installment into the DMC franchise(each game has been released within a ~3 year gap), and finally we get some news, DMC at Tokyo Game Show! The day finally comes and the announcement arrives:

DmC....a reboot of the series....made by Ninja Theory...with a western tone.....
So far, the game has taken an almost universal negative reception, with complaints ranging from the reason for a reboot, to the new look of the main character, "Dante", as well as the overall style of the game.

So the main question here is: What actually do you think of this new direction of the franchise?

[hr]
[HEADING=2]Personal Rant[/HEADING]

I have followed the series since the start, and while I think that the new game might end up turning out ok, I feel like it's a real stab in the back to fans of the series. There was no reason for a reboot. Each game as sold a significant ammount, the people still love and want the same old gameplay and the same old Dante, and its not like Capcom is in severe financial troubles(though they did have one of their worse years LAST year). And not that reboots are bad in and of themselves, but from what we have seen so far, there is little to no recognition that this game and the DMC series are one in the same beside having a main character called Dante and being called DmC. I just hope that they don't change the gameplay too much.

Devil May Cry isn't no regular hack n'slash, it isn't God of War, it isn't Dante's Inferno, and it isn't Dynasty Warriors, where you button mash to do as much damage as possible. The point of DMC always has been and always will be, to be stylish. It doesn't matter how much damage you do to that enemy or that boss, as long as you combo it up and make it look cool while doing so. You want to be doing stuff like this:
You want to be getting those S ranks, or doing those no-hit runs. It's not about the story(though the story is decent enough itself), its about overcoming odds, beating those difficulties and showing off while doing it, which I hope DmC can do....[sub]because nothing in that TGS trailer of it was stylish at all =S...[/sub]

Well, I got in due to a friend telling me about DMC3 and bugged me for MONTHS to get it. After I did, I can see why.

What do I think of the reboot?
"A reboot of the series"- sounds good (too lazy to quote stuff)
"Made by Ninja Theory"- Ok... sure.
"With a western tone"- SAY WHAT?

To be completely honest, I've hardly played the previous titles. I spent most of my time watching my brother play through the series. It looks like an awesomely enjoyable game, but for whatever reason I never wanted to play myself, possibly because my brother always stressed just how much the game was about style, and not button mashing. Now, that wasn't a turn off because it seems more difficult that I prefer, but because I figured I would... suck.

So the main question here is: What actually do you think of this new direction of the franchise?
Though I believe the series was doing fine up until this point, I don't think a reboot should only ever be used when a game series is on it's last legs. Whether this is because I'm not as personally attached to the series, or because I prefer to think all games are going to be, at the very least, good (until I'm all too often proven wrong), is something I don't know.

At first, when I watched the trailer I thought "What the hell? This isn't DMC...!", but then I watched it a few more times. At that point I realized a few things;

Although the only thing that is related to the original DMC is the protagonists name, and the game's name, that doesn't mean everything that made the series good isn't going to be present. I'll admit, I was a little bummed when I saw the car, as it was then I realized just how similar the environment looked to our cities, but around the third or fourth time I watched the trailer, I realized that doesn't necessarily mean the game's going to suck. Basically, I decided that it's just a trailer... no more than four minutes of CG. This trailer was a teaser, and it didn't show any actual gameplay. Hell, the game is hardly halfway done even.

Just because I don't think a reboot is needed, or that the environment and new Dante is 'lame' because he isn't the same as what I've grown to love, doesn't mean this wasn't a good choice, or art direction.

Change isn't bad, most of the time. Not to mention we hate change. Whether we'll admit it or not, most people hate it, and are quick to judge it.

It's not a finished product, and I haven't played it. Not that it's pointless to speculate or even complain, but I feel it's... eh. Somewhere between pointless and interesting, but not quite either.

Anyways, the TL;DR version is that I've decided against judging an entire game based on one trailer. There are too many unfinished and unknown elements for my own speculations or opinions to feel necessary.

Also, I'm really impressed with the OP. Organized, informative, interesting, and visual pleasing! Cheers. :)

The funny thing is look at Dante in the earlier series, its harder to get more western he is a cowboy boot wearing lone gunmen who could stride through hell with a smirk and a one liner, while flirting with his girl of the moment. The guy is John McClain meets Salomon Kane with a dash of James Bond, I am Not Sure how replacing with a crack addicted emo kid is supposed to appeal to a western audience.

One of the big draws of the game was the Characters themselves I hand become invested in Danta, Virgil, Trish and Lady. Sure I loved the game play but story was just as important.

Why should I invest in a similar game just cause it has usurped one of my favorite titles names.
I wouldn't have been any more likely to buy Dante's inferno If they called it a God of war and claimed it was a reboot why should I buy this unproven game from another developer just because the slap a DMC cover. If anything I am less likely to buy it then I would have been had they called it crack addict emo demon hunter then Devil May Cry, because I am ticked that it means I am not going to get a true Devil May Cry.

Note I would Total Play Crack Addict Emo Demon Hunter if they named a game that.

I can't really judge the new game yet since it's only been announced, nothing more, but the new look doesn't bother me. Apart from the coat, which looked better before... I'm guessing he'll become the dante we all know and love over the course of the game, so I don't think it would be that bad.

I agree with you about the character thing. After DMC 4, I wanted to find out more about Nero. Was Vergil really his father (meaning Vergil was getting it on with a prostitute at age 10)? What is his next adventure like? Will he start up his own chapter of Devil May Cry like the book suggested?
I wanted to see more from Trish and Lady. Both characters were pushed to the side-lines in DMC4. Especially Lady, who only appeared in two cut-scenes and had little to do with the plot, other than deus ex machina. I wanted to see what their next adventure would be. Especially since the hidden ending had the three of them setting off on a new ... case.
I wanted a sequel to DMC2. Maybe Vergil and Dante team up in the bowels of hell and escape with the help of Nero, Trish and Lady, who use the power of Yamato to open a gateway, releasing Dante and Vergil, but allowing an army of demons to run loose, which is then sorted out by the combined strength of Dante, Vergil and Nero. Something wild and over the top like that. Something that would dispel the hard feelings for DMC2 (which actually wasn't THAT bad, it just wasn't DMC good) and set up the DMC world for either continued adventures or a grand finale.

Again, I'd have to agree that Dante was pretty damn Western in the way he acted. I mean, hell, he even dressed like a cowboy in DMC4. What's more Western than a cowboy? That's Western even for Westerners.

I just want to know the reasoning behind the reboot. Especially when trend and popularity seem to indicate that a game focusing on Dante and/or Vergil as established in DMC3 would sell like hot-cakes. I mean, people hated DMC2 because it tried to go grim and gritty, and they screwed up Dante. DMC3 was widely acclaimed because Dante was back in full force. There are even people who will bash DMC4 because it didn't have enough Dante, the focus of that game being mostly on Nero. Why change it when the fans seem to have emphasized and over-emphasized exactly what they wanted in a DMC game: Dante (or Vergil. Everybody seems to love Vergil).

I loved the first game, the second game was ok, the third game was the best and the fourth might qualify as a decent rental.

Thats my opinion.

As for the reboot, can you provide a link? I have not heard of this.

I'm looking forward to it. Sure, it may not be as good as DMC3(what is?) but as someone who hasn't gotten a chance to play the first DMC, and never will, I'd like to have a game gave me a good introduction into the series. DMC4 was okay, but too much stuff isn't explained in-game. Like how Nero had his arm infected, why he looked so much like Dante, why neither he, nor Dante remarked on how they looked like twins... that kind of stuff.

Some of it is apperently explained in a book.

OT: I did judge it a little bit to much on the new Dante look at the beginning but i will judge it after i have played it.

But if Ninja Theory fucks up the gameplay...The rivers are going to be coler of red...

Honestly, I could NOT disagree more. For me, at least, it has ALWAYS been about Dante and the story behind him. His awesome attitude and kick-ass demeanor. It's been HIM that has been stylish and cool. Don't get me wrong, I love the game play too, but it was the DMC 3 Dante that I fell in guy-love with.

In short: Fuck Ninja Theory.
First Metroid Other M, now this.
Keep your fucking hands off the most awesome characters in video games.
What's next? A MGS2 Raiden version whiny effeminate Master Chief???

I can't remember how many times I've posted this, but here goes...

Metroid: Other M was developed by Team Ninja. DmC is being developed by Ninja Theory.

I don't care too much about Dante's horrible new design but I can say without much doubt that Ninja Theory is a bad developer.

I to have enjoyed all the DMC games,some more than others,I enjoyed the gothic tone,fast paced combat that just oozes substance and style and for the most part I enjoy Dante,even though some of his personalities annoyed me.My favorite one though is easily DMC 3 not only was it the most polished gameplay experience for me in the series,but I really enjoyed the story.Dante's and Virgil's rivalry was a great dynamic throughout the story making Dante's arc very meaningful as he transformed into the hard edged slayer we where introduced to in the first game.

As for your second main question this "reboot" really doesn't make any sense to me and just seems really uninteresting,I thought the 4th entry went well and opened up some new directions for the series.I know alot of people weren't a fan of Nero but his abilities mixed up the gameplay and were very satisfying,he was in the most direct position of events in the story and I thought switching up to Dante in the middle of the game to go backwards through all of Nero's progress was just a lame attempt to alleviate fan out cry of having a new protagonist and I was really starting to accept Nero as a new part of the series.

This reboot means nothing to me and has no place in the legacy you just so passionately outlined.I'll still play it when it comes out but so far from the looks of it that legacy is over.I wish the developers the best of luck and hopefully they can start their own legacy and retain the spirit of Devil May Cry.

To be honest, I kinda like his new look, I think it matches his "don't give a fck" attitude. While he may not look like the dante we know, the tench coat wearing, leather chaps bad ass, it's his attitude that makes him who he is. Being a 1/2 demon noone real knows how old dante is or whats his life span, or time zone he's living in. His look atm feels like he's some kid living in the 80's punk style, who prob slowly getting his demonic powers and doesn't know why, so its turned him into an outcast. While he looks young in other games, playing from dmc 3 > dmc 1 could be a 20 year difference w/o him ageing, aslong as he still keeps his cocky, smart ass attitude and they don't turn him into some silent sulking emo, then he'll still be dante, just in a different time of his life.

Not to be a dick or anything, Drow, but I haven't really seen anything saying that it isn't a reboot =S Ok, sure, it's been said that it just takes place in a different universe or something along those lines, but that can be taken in many different ways.

So, if you do have a link or anything, saying that it isn't a reboot, feel free to post it =]

Well, that may be true, but we have seen the art direction, the style, and the overall feel of the game; and when the major audience you are aiming it at has an overwhelming negative reaction to the whole thing(since DMC5 was expected, not a reboot/whatever this is), its usually not a very good thing =S

Oh trust me, I was pissed...

But then I thought...were all reboots bad? Think of other games with reboots. The Resident Evil original reboot was pretty good...so..why can't this be?

I'm going to give it a chance....a hardcore Devil May Cry has a reason to give it a chance.
