I've seen a lot of posts on both sides of this issue, but what's struck me is that I haven't seen anyone question this basic premise of Blizzard's argument here. Can anyone provide me with a cogent explanation of why they couldn't just allow single player and then disallow importing of characters into multiplayer?

It all boils down to the fact that more people online, equals more people using the RMAH, equals more cash dripping down to Blizzard from fees.

It has nothing to do with your convenience, security or enjoyment.

What Diablo 3 is doing is exactly what A PART OF Diablo 2 was doing. It's just that Diablo 2 can also do single player/LAN (i.e. you can be the server and host your own game.)

Also 75% of the fun I had from Diablo 2 was tinkering with its save file. I can get myself all kinds of ridiculous equipment by modifying the binary code in the save, all WITHOUT interfering with battle.net online player.

I am an avid PC gamer. Diablo 3 and it's apologetic community make me lose hope of the group called PC gamers.

This. There is no good reason for lack of single player. At all. Any argument in favor of always online can be countered by what you already suggested, but Blizz doesn't want to do that
