Did Brittney Spears Deserve A Tribute

Apparently she received a Tribute from the VMA tonight. Now, im not a hater or anything. As a 21 year old, i have pretty fond memories of hearing Brittney in the late 90s/early 00s. She was a pretty talented teenager/early 20 something, who could dance, and had a pretty nice voice. She couldn't sing as well as Beyonce or Christina, but she was the "it" girl of that time.

However, in more recent time, through a good amount of the last decade (and this one too), she went way downhill, and started making crappy autotuned songs, lip sinking in concerts, and lazy dancing. I know she is older, but i think an artist should mature as they age. I think she has digressed, if anything. But she is only 29, and is still young. She has plenty of days ahead of her. Which begs the question: shouldn't they wait a couple of decades or so to see how she plays out over the course of time?

She released her first single 13 years ago in 1998. 13 years sounds like a long time, but not that long ago actually. The kids who grew up listening to her, are still only teens/young adults. Not enough time has passed to see if she will still be looked up to by other younger generations, or if she is just simply 90s nostalgia for ageing generation y who is starting to grow up.

I also think that this tribute will just go to Brittney ego, and will give her more inspiration to make more crappy music. "I can lipsink, and sing on autotune, and i still get tributes. Might as well keep doing what im doing". Younger people's egos are harder to keep humble, and things go to their head easier, than say, if they waited 2 decades or so, when she is 49. Then she would have been around for a while, and have had her life figured out enough to the point where it wouldn't phase her.

just a thought...

Hell no, she was the one who inspired the wave of crappy pop music that had me convinced that all music was crap until I discovered that the late 80's and 60's existed. I know nothing about Brittany Spears or music, please disregard this post.

I dunno, how many of the songs attributed to her did she write? Must be quite hollow receiving a tribute for a song you did nothing more than show up to a studio to record.

Yes, she deserves a tribute within the context of Pop music. Because she managed to stay famous for thirteen years, that deserves a freaking medal. Think of all the other "It" people we've ploughed through (Nelly Furtado, anyone?), Brittney did extremely well, and they ought to honor her for it.

If you think the entire above statement is full of crap, then chances are you're not the audience for said tribute.

No, she didn't. But of course it is a mtv awards show so all sorts of stupid stuff would happen. Anyway, what has she even done for the past five years? Couldn't of been anything big cause I had totally forgotten she existed. I kinda preferred it that way. Thats the reason I don't watch those kinds of awards programs ( one of the reasons anyway)

Exactly. I'm not a bitter musician, I know that a talented writer came up with every catchy song she wrote (seriously, catchy songs ain't easy to write, try it) I know she has a great voice and is capable of dancing and that she is a figure head more than anything but I can't imagine looking back at "my" body of work and knowing I had nothing to do with it's inception and being proud.

I don't know though. Maybe she worked hard with the writers and she did tour like a ************ so I gotta give her props for that.

Did she die, and I didn't hear about it? Then no, she doesn't deserve a tribute.

Tributes should be given either to artists who have passed away in the year of the VMAs, or to artists who have had careers that lasted forever and actually contributed something to music. Yes, Britney has been famous for 13 years. So what?

They fell from the limelight a LONG time ago, and any fame they've garnered in the past few years has been from Beyonce's extremely successful solo career.

I'm talking "in the tabloids, in the top ten songs constantly" famous. Pretty much everything Britney releases gets in there (even recent ones like "Dancing 'Til the World Ends" and "Go All The Way"), and she still makes the tabloids (with stories such as getting a tribute at the MVAs).

ummm...maybe you missed my point. Destiny Child (*cough* *cough* Beyonce) has been making music for longer than Brittney. Brittney has been making music for 13 years. So what? Beyonce has for longer, and so have many others...

And you missed MY point... it's not a question of who makes the music for how long, it's a question of who stays famous longest (and no, Destiny's Child and Beyonce are two seperate entities).

I'm guessing you don't follow pop culture much?

As contrary to everybody here who hates Britney, I believe she does deserve a tribute.
Like it or not, she did inspire a new pop generation and in twenty years or so people will look back and say, "What happen to the good old days when Justin Timberlake and Britney sang?"
It's funny because awhile back people use to say that rock and roll fucked up kids and now people wish for those days back.
Besides, She lasted much longer then any modern day pop star and had lots of memorable hits regardless if you think her music is shit (Who doesn't know 'Oops Baby, I did it again'?). 13 years is a long time for a pop star career.

Seriously, as long as shes dead I dont begrudge her a tribute. I mean how many did that freaky pedo get after he kicked it?
Wat.

No, she's not dead. Remember, we're talking in terms of modern pop culture, which doesn't follow traditional word definitions.

It's a shock to me that Brittany Spears is even remotely relevant now. Pop musicians are supposed to have their 15 minutes of fame and then just fade into obscurity. I wasn't aware she was even still around. Last I heard she shaved her head and had some kids. Did that Chris Crocker thing resurrect her music career or something?

beyonce was famous when she was in Destiny Child. She's been famous before Brittney. What part of these sentences do you not understand?
