I just brought a brand spanking new desktop from comet today, but im still not sure if i had a good deal on it or not.

These are the specs:

4GB DDR3 Ram
3 Ghz Intel core I5 Processor
Nvidia G210 graphics
600GB Hard drive

All together with monitor, mouse and keyboard it came to £570 Pounds.

I tried out my graphics card and im less than impressed with it. On the Sims 3 I managed to nearly max it out while on Stalker Call of Pripyat I could only get it to run smoothly without dynamic lighting. While the card is not bad I certainly won't be playing Crysis on it (which was what I was striving for).

I mainly brought it for gaming and was told it was their most powerful Pc in stock, so i was expecting more from the graphics.

Did i get a good deal considering the price for it. Should i rush out for a new graphics card anytime soon and if so what one should I get?

If it came from Comet, you probably didn't get a good deal!

EDIT: Although I suppose you did get a monitor in with it too. I was comparing it to what I paid for my rig recently, and that came to £650 without a monitor. Much higher specs though.

I'd never buy from Comet again after the pain in the arse I had with my first LCD.

No, going buy the graphics card (I've never even heard of that model), since you'll have to buy a new one to max anything, out which is another £120ish.

Better to go with smaller computer companies who build it for you than any pre-built machines.

Mind you, with a monitor and everything I guess it's fair, although the graphics card is obviously an issue.

You should have invested more in the GPU, and less on RAM. There is no need for DDR3 RAM and it's more expensive than DDR2 which is enough and it will be enough for a long time. As for HDD, you will learn pretty soon that size doesn't matter as much as transfer speed. I have a 500Gb Hitachi and I have more than 70% free space after 3 years. Having a good HDD with a lot of space is important, but if you're on a tight budget then you should concentrate on what really matters, and I guess games are what matters for you so you should always look for extra money to invest in GPU. So in conclusion no, you didn't get a very good deal.

The graphics look pretty shit and if your processor isn't at least 2ghz(or something) or higher, then comet just jerked off in your face.

Except for the graphics card, it's not that bad.

But seriously, they're liars.

Its 3 ghz thank god.

I'm actually surprised how fast the processor is. That is one of the good things about the system.

I can run Crysis, and my specs are significantly lower than yours. Just turn the settings down. For me, I have texture detail in every game VERY high, with everything else around bare minimum.

Well, if its fast, then you have a (probably) good chance of upgrading the graphics because there are few enough computers that can run that fast.

~$900, right? Ergh... it's not awful, not great. I could build that thing myself for about... $500.

If you wanna shell out extra money, get a Geforce GTX 400 series card. That'll cover the "meh"ness of the processor (which isn't too "meh", but it's not remarkable either).

Umm. Not really I got the same sort of specs, but a 220 GPU and a Quad Core processor for £400. Though it had an awful keyboard that I replaced right away. Still it's ok if it's a good monitor. The processor is good.

Really? that's good news considering I am only really concerned in texture detail, resolution and anti aliasing.

Resolution's the big one that I tone down, my native is 1680x1050 but I don't run ANY games in that resolution. Your processor should be able to handle almost-native, but don't expect too much...

Not sure how the pricing works over there, but I'd say with the monitor mouse and keyboard, its a pretty good deal.

The G210 is an entry level, non-gaming graphic card. Don't expect to run most games at high, especially not Crysis.

Graphics card may as well not exist. Well, it's better than a straight intergrated card, but it's still pretty dire for gaming purposes. Were it not for the fact that PC gaming generally needs competent graphics cards, I would say that would be a decent deal. Monitor would be worth about £80 to £110, but otherwise you're probably looking at spending another £110 for a good graphics card. You might as well have built it yourself and not spend twice.

That's a good 900 USD, and you got hosed.

For $300 more (from Dell, even---this astounds me. Normally I buy from them expecting to pay a big premium just because of their generous credit terms), I got:

- 9 GB 1333MHz RAM
- Core i7-930 2.8GHz
- 1 TB hard drive
- Radeon HD5670 graphics card.

Didn't come with a monitor, but I've already got one.

Wow...that's incredible, but i doubt you would get that for less than a thousand pounds over here.

Let's try and match this from Dell.co.uk...
Core i7 870 2.93Ghz
8Gb 1333MHz RAM
1.5Tb hard drive
Radeon HD5770 graphics card
No monitor.

Total cost: £899 (about $1450)

Slightly better PC, but not $200 better.

Of course, if you know where to look (*cough* [http://www.myvouchercodes.co.uk/discounts/dell.co.uk#discounts]), you can find a significant chunk off that price, but still. You can probably save more by building it yourself.

You could save more, but (a) you'd have to go to the trouble of building it yourself, waiting for all the parts to ship from all the vendors if you bought piecemeal looking for the best prices, (b) Warranty services would be a ***** because you'd have to suss out exactly what part was causing the problem before you got the warranty service on it, and (c) if your credit is good Dell offers long-range no-interest financing (I got mine with a 12-month no-interest payment plan.)

I could probably build a similar-spec PC for a few bucks less than what I paid for my Studio XPS 9100, but it's worth it to have all my customer-service needs (even shitty customer service like Dell offers out of Bangalore or Manila or rural Papua New Guinea or wherever the fuck their call center is) in one place.
