Did "Other M" hurt the Metroid series? (and what do you want to see next?)

after being addicted to "Metroid:Zero Mission" the entire weekend I got thinking....

do you think because of the reception of Other M it may have hurt the chances of us getting a "proper" metroid game anytime soon? and by that I guess I mean a follow up to Fusion which is (as far as I know) chronologically the latest...

weather or not Other M was as awful/not as awful as people say one thing that sticks out is the charachterisation of Samus...at least most people agre...that kind of sucked

and again from that I hear it wasnt a case of [i/]"those people who made the volleyball games fucking up samus"[/i] no, it was aparently partly the fault of the original creator....which isnt exactly a good sign,

so anyway...if we ever do get another Metroid game then what do you want to see? 2D?..3D? 2.5D?..should Samus keep her mouth shut?

personally Id like it to be "next" in the series, preferably not on a handheld but rather a console (yeah..Im a little biased against handhelds) eather 3D or 2.5D

I'm fine with the Idea of Samus Talking...Other M isnt the first time she's ever uttered a word (there was Fusion and also a Manga at some point) hell there has been narration by her before....I dont think its a hard thing to fuck up eather

so..[b/]what do you want for the next metroid game?[/b]

Supposedly the manga has her close to her Metroid Other M personality, that's just what I heard from a friend really into Metroid though. I would love to see a 2d or 2.5d Metroid done on a console as a downloadable title, a lot like Shadow Complex, so it can look beautiful and I can play it on a big screen.

Other: M may have hurt the series if the creators don't learn from it's mistakes particularly with respect to characterising Samus, not a bad idea in and of itself but was terribley executed and in stark contrast to what was expected of her based on previous games. She doesn't need to go back to being silent but if there isn't the voice and script to do her justice it would be a safer bet.

As for the style of game I think either a tradition 2D style like the originals or 3D like the prime games, I have never been a fan of 2.5D. Also while I am at it, did anyone else hate the switching from 3rd to 1st person perspective in Other: M? Besides feeling very unconfortable it just made me think everytime 'I wish I was playing one of the prime games'. Choose a perspective and stick to it please.

I'd like to think that Other:M didn't kill the series considering how consistently good the metroid games have previously been, so with any luck this screw up will hopefully refocus the franchise towards to correct path and not created a point of no return.

I think Metroid Other M was more of an experimental thing that didn't go so well. I haven't played it (I own it, I just need to get on that), so I can't exactly talk about it, but I'm glad they dared to try something.

As for what I want for later games, I can totally see the Shadow Complex thing working, I think that would be awesome. That's my input. Yup.

I want a 3D Metroid (Prime series), done by Retro Studios with Samus quiet as a mouse. I would consider it partial compensation for the atrocity that was Other M.

Well, I dont think Metroid Other M will shelve the whole Metroid series indefinitely, I do think we wont see another Metroid game in a while, a long while.
You see, while they do get good reception, they dont really sell well (cept' for Metroid prime), usually by unfrotunate circumstances, so I heard. Other M getting both lukewarm reception and bad sales may have left a bad impression on Nintendo. but hopefully I'm wrong.

As for a hypothetical sequal... well I have a lot of things I want done to it. As everybody mentioned, Shadow Complex is an awesome base. So yeah, 2.5D, though I would've loved high definition 2D sprites. I'd also like elements from Heart of Darkness, though the thought of constantly dying by tentacles on the wall may undermine the idea of being a powerful space bounty hunter, so maybe not.
Meh I even made an outline for an imaginary sequal back during highschool, tis a loser I am.

I wouldn't mind more Other M. I found Samus' character to be rather believable in it.
Although I haven't played far enough to get ot the story complaints.

Maybe some third person stuff with a more free camera? Because I'd like more like Prime but more first person may get stagnant. More games with a distinct story and voice acting would be interesting.

I think other M was the best 3D Metroid, because it's the only one that played like a Metroid game. Don't get me wrong, I hundred percent-ed all three prime games, but they were just FPSs with exploration. I want a 3rd person perspective action adventure game more... because that's why I like Metroid?

Don't get me wrong, the story and characterization of Samus was utter dog shit. But god knows I don't play metroid for the story anymore then I play Mario for the Story. Most negative reviews were aimed entierly at the story, then just nit picked from there from their fan-rage; most of them even admitted that (Xplay, for example). Yeah, it was linear for a Metroid game, but what the reviewers failed to mention is so was Prime 3, and all while simultaneously using the prime series as a positive example. It's like, come on guys I know you hate the story and just find it THAT OFFENSIVE! (OMG) But you should really give the game it's due where deserved. It's the closest thing we got to the 2D Metroids on a console since the SNES, and that was very much welcome and fun.

I'd like another fps from the prime folks, personally. Those games were golden.

I also loved the old ones and fusion, so I wouldn't mind a 2.5d or true 2d one to come on.

That said, whatever it is I'd rather they finally give us a sequel to fusion, and not just another prequel.

Also keep Samus a silent protagonist... or hire a voice actress with any believable human emotion at all.

Well, it's not why most people do, I'd wager. Metroid is ALL about exploration. Prime 3 was divided into planets, but each one wide and explorable. Other M had virtually NO exploration. Metroid has always been about Samus working alone in a cold, unforgiving environment, not being in constant contact with a douche bag barking orders at you.

SO WRONG. Please go play metroid fusion. It's worlds better than other m, a true 2d sidescroller, has no voice acting and minimal dialogue from samus but a way better story.

(GBA is technically a console)

In fact, other M outright stole its biggest plot twist from metroid fusion. Both games even have adam malcovich! And yet adam in fusion is not an insufferable douche, usually.
The federation is secretly cloning metroids a spacestation that you destroy. Again.

The only thing other M had going for it was passably good gameplay, which I did enjoy. Still doesn't measure to the 2D games or primes, though.

Slap the original creator away (from the story, not gameplay if it's 2d), get Retro Studios back on it. Needs moar first-person-adventure, the Metroid Prime: Trilogy box is perhaps the greatest thing on the Wii. Corruption was a bit less explore-y (although the occasional setpiece battles were fantastic), Echoes a bit repetitive due to the Darkworld, following in Prime 1's "Super Metroid in 3d" would be nice.

Wouldn't mind Samus talking, but give her back all the implied badassness of the previous games. "Oh noes, the space dragon I've killed five frickin' times is alive again!" Probably leave her fairly quiet, like a loner war orphan raised by non-humans probably would be, but less daddy issues plz.

Also, make another one not featuring space pirates weaponizing metroids, the federation weaponizing metroids or phazon. Maybe explore one of the background plot threads from Hunters - Kriken Empire, mebbie? Having a reactive invasion force present in the gameworld could make all the bactracking a little less repetitive - the third time you trek through the overworld, a dropship might be flying by; do you try and shoot it down, fight the occupants, or sneak into a burrow with the morph ball until it passes?

It may have kind of buffered the release of the next Metroid game, but it's such a big series i dont think one outlier in the series will ruin it. Personally, i'd love to see more games like Prime, the first one, specifically. I didnt like the dark world in Echos and while i've never played it, I heard Corruption was much more action-orientated.

I didn't really mind Other M, that being said I doubt that after the pile of fanboy "but That's not the way I imagined Samus" whine/hate that we'll see anything like that next. As far as style... 2.5d can carry on tablet, phone, and handheld. And I think Wii U needs to wait until the devs get a good look at what the U can do, and then hit it up... full sandbox style? It makes a little sense, even though it's always been a series of linear corridors it's always had a focus on exploration that would be good in a full sandbox. Plus method of transport is important in a sandbox, and she could have some kind of cool speederbike or a jetpack to go along with the energy hookshot. And Just Cause 2 proves sandbox transport with a hookshot is pretty fun.

Wish the series were multi-platform. It is clear that those games aren't system sellers anymore. Why not try other systems as well to improve sales? Or am i looking from the wrong angle here?

Well, Other M may have hurt Metroid´s reputation, but if the series distances itself from it and moves forward in future installments, Other M will likely be forgotten. At least for me at any rate, the only reason I actually remember that I even played it is that it keeps cropping up in discussions like this from time to time (not that I mind though).

I would like to see some more handheld games though, in 2D preferably (as those tend to look really great on handhelds).

First of all, regarding mangas, let's be clear and understand that 97% of books based on games are abominations (guides and things do not count).

I didn't play any Metroid game until Corruption. I thought the controls worked crazy well and the environment was chilling. I got the Wii Trilogy version, so I'll go back and play the other two.

I've played one, and only one, Metroid game so far. So, with that in mind, I hope the next one I play will be exactly like the one I just played in control and atmosphere. For me, that'll be a game that already exists, but if it wasn't, I'd still hope for the same things.

For the love of god they need to make Metroid Dread. Make it more like Super Metroid than Metroid Fusion. A new Metroid Prime style game would work as well. It has to be made by Retro and if it has the Corruption controls, I would love it.

I am one of the few people in the world who didn't hate the game. I thought the gameplay was decent, but the way the story was presented was pretty bad. Samus talking in a monotone, bowing down to her male companions, taking orders from someone with no right to issue orders.

I don't think the game hurt the future of Metroid as long as they don't shelve it because of this. All they need to do is to make a new Metroid Prime and no-one will care about Other M.

It was separated into planets, but you couldn't go anywhere or do anything on those planets except the one direction and the one door you were supposed to go to next. Yeah eventually after you got the item you were supposed to get, you had to go back to a planet you have been to already, but again it was just to go to a single spot, with all other paths blocked. Other M was identical in layout. It had backtracking but it showed you where you had to go, and gave little options for divergence outside of a hidden missile tank or two. Granted, Prime 3 opens it's doors a bit more towards the end.... but so did Other M. Both of these games failed in the exploration department, especially after the HUGE world Prime 2 offered.

SO WRONG. Please go play metroid fusion.

Well, that's just semantics. I will change my statement to 'home-console' if that helps. But you are right, the GBA games were MUCH better then other M. To bad those are gone forever; I honestly don't think they will ever make another Metroid game just like that ever again. Something like Other M is the closest we will get because "Lol Nintendo".

I'd love to see a game that combines the combat gameplay from Other M with some more fine-tuned traditional gameplay like the GBA games had.

Also, Nintendo need to hire a professional writer for the script. No more Sakamoto writing, please.

And I wouldn't be against a complete reboot of the series.
