Even domestic abuse here the cops can't really do much if the person doesn't want to press charges or isn't cooperative. One of my friends is a retired state trooper and detective and he has tons of stories obviously. He'll sometimes talk about some domestic abuse cases where the woman won't cooperate/press charges and then he's back out there in like a month and she's beat up even worse than before and sometimes worse than that as well. There's not much you can do if the person won't testify or they'll just lie in front of a jury and say they fell or something. And, of course, there's certain crime stats that are technically true but not actually true like a guy in our board game group is like "we shouldn't even put people in jail because like only 0.2% of people are repeat criminals (or whatever the actual stat is)" and my friend is like "he has no fucking clue what he's talking about".That thing about not pressing charges, I don’t know if it’s common in the US but there are certain offences in Australia - domestic abuse for example - which the police are obligated to investigate regardless. But they’re usually crimes that involve violence, although robbery by definition involves violence. But in 1969, if someone said they weren’t interested in pursuing it I don’t see the cops doing anything other than saying “Woohoo!” and going away. So yeah I agree that’s odd.
