And I thought it was a fun movie. Never watched Origins or First Class, just the original X-Men trilogy, compared to which I thought this was fun and thankfully NOT overloaded with pointless characters sitting around waiting for an arc to come by. Nope, this is aaaaall about Wolverine. His arc lasts exactly one (1) first act, his dilemma of "To Be or Not To Be (immortal)" is quickly solved (as in he makes his choice) and it's all ass-kicking thereon.

The, shall we say, "plot" involves him fighting yakuzas, ninjas, samurais, mecha-samurais and a few other mutants. Coupled with the fast pace and constant swapping of random scenarios in exotic feudal/modern Japan, the whole thing reminded me of an old school beat 'em up arcade game where just about ANYTHING will pop out to fight you. Think Cadillacs & Dinosaurs (ever play that game?) or God Hand.

Well, it's not all campy fun, there're some stabs at Wolverine's sadsack plight early on, and his guilty conscience following Last Stand, herein symbolized by Jean Grey showing up now and then waiting for him in a sexy nightie in a pearly Hereafter. And a romance subplot involving Mariko, the daughter of the dude that summons him to Tokyo in the first place. But that's it. I found it to be fun, not at all solemn or gritty like your Dark Knights and Men of Steel. This is by and large Jackman at his most dettached and charismatic. I realized how much of a Mel Gibson-esque presence he has, and how easily he can carry the weight of an action-adventure movie on his own.

Yes, there're a couple of plot holes involving the villains and their plan. It was more of a Bus Ride Home Logic for me, didn't really bother me during the movie. And I called it action-adventure as opposed to straight out action flick or superhero movie because, well, it feels equal parts action and adventure. Like I said before, part of the fun is the silly ride we hitch through the plot and the wide range of enemies, scenarios and campy shifts.

Another thing I was deeply thankful for: no allusions to terrorism whatsoever. I'm sick and tired of every single action blockbuster working in terrorism as part of the plot. No terrorism, no fleeing masses of civilians as towers crumble behind, no contrived propaganda or patriotism or messages about modern-day political agenda: just a bunch of bad guys who cross the wrong dude. You know what? FINALLY.

As for the mandatory Marvel bonus scene during the credits (after the fancy Power Point credits and right before the boring scroll-on-black credits)...

Next thing, reality freezes and Wolverine is confronted by both Magneto and Xavier because "dark forces are coming/preparing" and "they could mean the destruction of all of us" (something along those lines). Xavier's return is simply hand-waved as "you're not the only one with gifts/powers", which I think is a reference to the very first X-Men movie, regarding a conversation they had there. So there you go, Xavier has returned, he's in good terms with Magneto and X4 is gonna pitch them against Sentinels.

Or you know...it could be for Days of Futures Past, which deals with Sentinels and stuff.

So it would be both a sequel to The Wolverine and First Class?

And X-Men 3. Don't forget X-Men 3.

I fear Future of Days Past could be a massive mess trying to fit X-Men 3 and First Class in the same movie, I forsee a lot "This happens because of Time Travel and because fuck you, that's why" coming.

Part of why I liked The Wolverine was because it felt unburdened by the rest of the movies in the franchise. It'd be a shame to see them go back to their retconning schemes.

I see Days of Future Past hand-waving large parts of X3 out the window
, notably Xavier (which X3 did somewhat), Jean's and Scott's deaths, and the loss or reduction of several mutant's powers, like Magneto

Because that's what time travel is very good at, retconning films that nobody likes without having to reboot a series.

I kinda would like to see a hard R Wolverine flick after reading X-force and his MAX line, but the PG-13 rating didn't really detract from my enjoyment of this film. It's crazy to see an actor that is so dedicated to a character, especially a comic book character, he pushes himself to get that ridiculous physique and then acts the part faithfully. Beyond that, it's Logan pulling the same act that Tommy Lee Jones played in The Hunted, then he's in Japan fighting ninjas. What more could a comic geek want? Sure it's not the Hand but yakuza is the face of Japanese mafia that everyone recognizes so that works just fine. One side note with the dreams of Jean - did anyone else get the idea that she may have been a bit more than a dream, perhaps a callback to the White Hot Room in the comics? She was after all very powerful in X3 (yes they screwed her in that movie but still) and if the Professor can survive the destruction of his physical body then why can't she? The after credits scene was cool, an obvious prelude to DOFP, though I would have liked to see a shot or two of Dinklage as Trask.

Generally speaking I assume no comic book-inspired franchise will forever alter their status quo based on the fear of running out of options (or fans). Most deaths take place off-screen, or are inferred, or are vague for whatever reason. So it's very hard to invest myself on people who cannot and will not actually die. Xavier's alive and Jean keeps showing up, for one thing. By that principle, maybe Scott's alive. Who knows, they can pull some alternate timeline crap as they always do. Sabretooth and Toad died Disney deaths. Everybody else (like Viper) are so expendable and obviously one-shot that they don't really matter much. Maybe this is one of the reasons I tend to like Batman universes. As far as the Nolan trilogy and the Arkham games go, people who are presumed dead tend to stay that way. Which makes things so much more interesting, in my opinion.

A friend of mine was an extra in the movie, which instantly makes it a 105%

I'll check it out in the future, like DVD future, dont care that much otherwise. Tho I did read the post-credits spoiler, and like the sound of it.
