Disgaea 5 complete edition will soon hit the market, within a week worldwide.

I looked up some youtube clips and got the feeling of Fire Emblem combined with Pokemon or Shin Megami Tensei...
How accurate is this?
If it is anything like that, then I know I will like it and will get it. Which I most likely will anyway... :D

How would you guys describe this game?
Mainly in a way I understand, so games similar to it, when it comes to exploration, combat and so on.
No spoilers please.
and Thanks in advance!

Disgaea is a satirical anime adventure, it's mainly funny and cool, with a lot of references and so on. Gameplay-wise it's like a final fantasy tactics style game with the core difference that the point of the game is to grind to absurd levels (lvl 9999 and so on) and do trillions of damage in your combos. I mainly enjoy the story but you can also get hundreds of hours of gameplay out of them if you try to beat everything the game throws at you and get the ultimate team.

There's no exploration, just a basic hud that acts as a base that you traverse which is basically glorified menus, that and a whole hell of a lot of combat scenarios with various conditions. Item worlds especially make grinding the focal point because not unlike characters, every single item also can be leveled up, but to do that you have to grind inside of the world of the item and beat various consecutive fights, which will also give you other items.

Oftentimes, trying to level up something will in the process give you something better than the item you just leveled up and in trying to level the new thing up you get another even better thing, eventually you get to a point where you're too weak to level up the new new new thing any more so you kinda settle with what you already have but by then you've played for like 20 hours and are still on chapter 1. That has been my disgaea experience with every single game :p.

Right, there is exploration in that sense. I just thought he meant a more standard skyrim-type exploration. There's a whole hell of a lot of surprises hidden within the game. You just don't find them through exploring but rather through grinding the ever living hell out of your team.

Pokemon it is not, though as of Disgaea 3 there is a monster-catching element.
You deploy up to 10 characters over an isometric grid-like level and assign each character up to (1) movement and (1) action per turn. You get a bunch of story-based characters along the way, usually painfully under-leveled, but can create original characters as well (there're like 100 different classes or so). Characters level up their masteries of certain weapons and abilities the more you use them, and can get reincarnated into different classes while carrying over class-specific bonuses.
Really the game is as complicated as you want it to be. I'd recommend beginning with the first one, Hour of Darkness.

I mainly got the POkemin/SMT from what I saw in the first 45minutes, were they explored a small area, but apparently it is more of a small area which works as a "menu" of sorts.
So yeah, thanks for clarifying that misconception :D

That is the basic hub area that serves as a base. It functions the same as a main menu would but instead of giving you all the game mode options it turns them into characters you talk to to access these options so as to add a bit more flavor to the world. Nowhere else in the game do you freely walk around and interact with things like in a pokemon or smt game, the rest are all isometric grid turn based battles like in FFT that are accessed through this central hub.
