Do Console Gamers Have More Fun?

So, do blondes console gamers have more fun? I'm just going to put a console gamer's perspective on this, with the intention of PC gamers putting their points across and other console gamers agreeing with me. Obviously.

So: let's get some things straight right from the beginning. I have played PC games. I don't have a 'gaming rig' or whatever, but I've played Civilisation IV... and that's it. Which, I suppose, leads on to my problem.

Too. Much. Effort.

And that is mostly my problem, you could argue. And yes, it probably is, but the simple fact is that I don't want to spend, say, £1000 pounds and hours building a good PC for something that a console can do adequately, and most importantly well. Then, once the fun of setting up is over, there's the fact that it just isn't as user friendly as a console. There isn't the friendly dashboard with a nice interface showing my friends, what they're playing, my games, my achievements, etc. It's nice; it's clean. Now, in the few times I've used a computer to play multiplayer games, there has been a definite feeling of solitude. I rolled up with some people I didn't know in a random lobby. With the Xbox, for example, there is a feeling of community (even though MMOs that can only be found on PCs are far more 'community'-ish than the Xbox) and connection at all times with the whole guide system. Say I was playing Halo 3. One of my friends could log on, decide to play Modern Warfare 2, invite me to join his party, and in say less than a minute we would be playing together.

Sadly, I find that using a PC is nowhere near this user-friendly. There is a lot of work - the initial setup, keeping it updated, drivers, installing, private servers, and the whole point of this arguement? It's just too much. Yes, maybe in the end there are more rewards, but I just think it seems like too much effort for it to be fun. Why do that when I can do nearly the same on a console?

TL; DR GUYZ - YOUR CUE!

This post isn't just about hating on PCs. It's about me trying to find out why PCs are better than consoles as many would have me believe. So, if you're rooted on the side of computers: what are the overall benefits of a PC, how hard is it to keep it running, and most importantly: why is it fun?

Thanks for reading (unless you are one of the aforementioned TL; DR guyz, in which case, you may leave quietly) and I hope your responses can set me straight. Because I just don't see the appeal.

Different strokes for different folks.

PC games can achieve the same level of "community" you speak of, and in many ways it can achieve more. Steam helps me a lot with this, as well as this very forum.

Unless you get ripped off every step of the way there is absolutely no way a good gaming PC is going to cost you £1000. Maybe in the late 90's, early 00's, but these days tech is getting so accessable I'd be amazed if you couldn't get a very servicable gaming rig for the price of, say, an xbox 360. Keeping them updated is easy (ok, maybe upgrading hardware every few years is a task, but hey) and maintaining them is not only simple, but fun too! (Getting a little rubber thingy of compressed air to just squeeze over the computer every few weeks, it's a barrel of laughs!)

Ultimately, PC Gamers enjoy a greater sense of control and freedom. In my mind, both PCs and consoles are perfectly valid ways to enjoy one's hobby, it just comes back to the phrase I mentioned at the start of this post.

Edit: As for the simpler question the title alone poses; my brother plays xbox 360 and he's always screaming and moaning about something or other, so probably not.

I know that with a console, you can be sure that a game will run fine on it.

and that with a PC, you better be damn sure your PC can run it, or else you are in for a laggy, unplayable mess.

*feels ripped off after getting "The Bard's Tale" off of Steam, only to find that its slow as fuck even on low*

Console gamers can play with friends ON THE SAME TV, for PC, you have to have a whole another PC. That and the controls are little more friendly for first time users. That's about it.

I have more fun on Console games because I'm not distracted by social networking, etc.
Although I do like PC gaming to an extent but mostly only use the PC for MMORPGs when looking at gaming.

I must admit that I have never used Steam and I completely forgot about it when writing my OP. Now that you reminded me of it, I realise this is definitely something that would 'streamline' my gaming, so to speak.

For the dashboard showing your friends that is why we have xfire, steam and stuff like this website. Yes dragging computers over and setting them up is a chore but it can be fun doing it with your friends as much as say rock band or something would be. I have found a much better community via xfire than I have ever seen on consoles.

Also we have Teamspeak and Vent so we only have to listen to people we actually want to when we play a game so no whiny little kids.

We have much more freedom over everything than consoles will ever have with mods and dedicated servers. Also although it may be hard work when you actually get it working it is more rewarding . If you aren't lazy and have a bit of initiative if you're in trouble you can google something and nearly always find the answer.

+ Better Communitys (setting them up)
+ Mouse and FUCKING KEYBOARD! Oh yeah!
+ Modifications.
+ Customization.
+ We use an actual OS, so if we want we can alt tab outta the game, and go to a walkthrough if desperate.
+ Console(no not the gaming console, it's a command window CALLED Console). Who doesn't wanna spawn what ever the hell they want [sub]Crazy people that's who[/sun]
+ Dedicated Servers, and Dedicated Server browser. If I want 6 ping and map X with 63/64 people I'll get that 6 ping with Map X with 63/64
+ More people per map. Which then = Bigger maps.
+ More graphical and processing power then the current consoles. That's right, the consoles TECH WISE are out dated.
+ Devs can add features that just can't be done on consoles due to hardware restraints. Example in Red Faction Guerrilla they improved the destruction and physics for the computer.

- Hard for people who can't work a computer (i.e. Idiots)
- Generally speaking, unless you're in the know you won't be able to upgrade or maintain the computer. But due to it being PC and having the INTERNET available it's a mere google search away.
- Devs focus on console gamers.

Hell, from my Point of view, with exception to Devs not caring about the PC guys (due to us being a minority now) I don't see why console Gamers ARE console gamers. Unless you seriously can't work a freaken server browser window, or you just can't work a computer (from which is a freaken GOOGLE SEARCH AWAY) I just don't see it.

Ahh well to be fair all of my Console experience is from my PS2 and reading online.

ive got a PC and a 360
the 360 is better for when u have friends around and want to play co-op
the PC has better online community and online gaming.

i dont like paying $80 a year to play online, Ontop of my usual Internet bills..
and Pc gives the wonders of the world wide web =D and allows you to access awesome websites such as the one you are on now

also.. i dont like paying for my Game updates, like on Call of Duty WAW and L4D!

Don't think you have enough PC experience to compare the two.
For me the pros far outweigh the cons, which is why I'm leaving at least this console generation out.

As for your "there isn't a user interface of friends, games they are playing and chat things", I've been using xfire since before the xbox 360 was released.

As long as i start right, my PC will satisfy all my gaming needs (better graphics and processing along with better FPS controls and online far outweigh the complexity). I don't have one, but am planning to build once I get enough money

I've experienced both and they deffinately both have their advantages but i would go with the PC. I've had most experience on the PC, and i think that's why it's better than the consoles. I had an Xbox 360 for about a year and after a while felt like I wasn't getting as much out of it as i would get on a PC. Building up a PC is pretty satisfying and makes you feel like you're a specialist in the field, even when you don't have a clue what half of the parts actually do. Theres also the huge amount of pride when you max out a game and feel proud as if you've made the right decision. Mods and customisation mean you get just that little bit more out of your games.

Just my opinion though.

I have measured global fun levels with my frivolometer and can confirm that PC gamers have on average 10 funvins per hour more fun than the average console gamer.

Exactly this, except switch The Bard's Tale for Portal.

Me: "Hey, that looks like a fun game, let's hit up Steam and get going!"
Portal: "Y... eah... no... you... c... an't... pl... ay... thi... s..." (absolutely unplayable, with a full second of lag between each movement, on lowest settings and a running in a tiny window)

Although I can actually play some stuff since I got a new graphics card, I'm sticking with my consoles. I'd still need to upgrade my PC a lot to keep up with current games, and then keep doing so in the future. Even if I bought the parts, I'd have to get friends to help me or take it into a computer shop to get them installed, for fear of the irreparable damage that would undoubtedly happen if I did it myself.

Long story short: I can't afford it or be bothered with the effort when console gaming is so much cheaper and easier.

(Fair warning for anyone who wants mock my lack of technical ability or otherwise flame: don't bother, I'm not interested.)

PC can even have a MUCH bigger community...and remember...most PC problems are caused by incompetent users. The problem isn't your machine, it's whats between the keyboard and the chair.

I have a nice gaming PC and feel that the PC is superior in all ways. Larger communities, easier to get online (no need to pay for Live) and superior mouse aim control. I payed $760 for my PC in total (Custom build) and I can infinitely upgrade it and play PC games from 2001 if I care to. Can an Xbox do that? No. Can a PS3 do that? With limited choices, yes.

To me it's worth the hassle.

And I do have more fun. Cause then I can put my emulators on my PC, have all my older games (I still play Resident Evil 4) and even take advantage of crappy controller controls if I wanted to.

Mods can make any bad game good, as long as it has a following. Take stalker:shadow of Chernobyl, its a outdated game but has good qualities, so i downloaded a HUGE mod pack and it looks and plays much better. Consoles cant do that (without a lot more effort anyways)

consoles can have mods with little effort like in unreal tournament 3 on ps3.
