Do I just like bad games?

Fable 2, Mirrors edge, Spider Man: Web of Shadows, the new Prince of Persia and The Force unleashed are some of the best games I've played this year. These games, while getting 80% and above on reveiw averaging sights are seen as generally bad games and dissapointments. Why is this? Am I just attracted to bad ganes? Do any of you feel like you like you enjoy generally disliked games? I don't just mean underappriciated ones, I mean, you look at a reveiw and you say: "aww man, I was really looking forward to this, and it sucks." then you play it and its really good and you wonder whats wrong with everybody. I never feel bad for myself, really just for other people for over analyzing things and not enjoying themselves. Or is it just an over-abundance of cynicism in todays society?

It just really depends on what you like. Some people will love Nintendogs, other people hate it ( I am one of the people that hate it lol )

I think, with those games in particular, it really falls with how you're looking at the games, and how they're perceived. Viewed objectively, they really aren't as terrible as most would have you believe. In fact, they're quite good. The problem is that for the most part, expectations for them were impossibly high. Whether this was caused by an overzealous PR team, a particularly excitable developer or just blind hope, it all comes to the same conclusion: The games didn't meet our expectations, so they were viewed as being of poor quality.

Take those out of that list now.
I find that those two games are generably unliked by those I ask about it.

Your taste in games is entirely subjective. What appeals to you will make the person next to you puke on your shoes. Play what you like and don't pay attention to reviews, unless for some reason you need an excuse to stop playing something you claim to like.

Trust me, my friend likes some of the worst games ever. Mainly the Halo series which he still hasn't found any hard evidence that it's anything more than an average shooter.

He even liked the new Alone in the Dark *shudder*

Sometimes your average shooter is exactly what you want to play. Halo is one of those spectacularly average games. It has something that everyone will like but everything in it is average, nothing bad, nothing good.
Personally I don't care what others think, other than to try and see it from their perspective. I'll listen politely and keep on doing what I'm doing.

Some of those games I agree with you are awesome, but I strongly dislike Fable 2. To me it felt like almost a copy and paste of fable one's story, except with different people, and guns. And it was far to short. But that's just me, I'm sure there are at least 20 people who will disagree with me.

But I do agree about Force Unleashed, I liked it, but apparently a lot of people hated it.

Everybody likes different things. Some folks like outstanding graphics, some like super fast-paced gameplay, others like games that are intellectually stimulating. What you like is what you like, and that's all there is to it.

Of course you don't have bad taste. You have your own, individual taste in games, which is more important than caring what others think about them. There's no law on games you are or aren't allowed to like, so stop worrying and keep playing. By the way, most of those games you mentioned are pretty good, in my opinion. I'm not keen on Fable 2 or Mirror's Edge, but I wouldn't exect people to care too much about it, since it's an opinion, and everyone is entitled to a different one.

but... but... wait a minute you guys, we're all forgetting that the only opinions that matter are other peoples... and that subjectivity is a lie...

Joking aside, I read reveiws to get an idea of the features in a hard copy of a game. More like an extended preveiw than something to base my buy on. Although I have found that if I play a game I really like and read a bad reveiw of it, I tend to notice the things they said bad about it exaggerated when I continue to play the game. For example when I first bought Assassins Creed, I never noticed any repetivity or I just didnt care. Then I read a reveiw and I noticed it. I still loved(and love) that game, I just realized how repetative the missions were. Good thing they're still fun the 100th time.

As a general rule I read reviews when I'm on the fence about a game; if the game mechanics are horribly broken or if the game's buggier than a cheap motel I want to know about that before I buy.

Beyond that I place absolutely no faith in scores because scores exist only to satisfy the corporate payola machine. I'm more interested in the substance of the writing (one reason I like the reviews on the Escapist, even if it seems like certain members of the staff love every game that comes their way---q.v. Susan Arendt's reviews of Fable 2, Animal Crossing City Folk, and Mirror's Edge.)

If I really want to know what a game's flaws are in no uncertain terms, that's what Yahtzee is for, but I don't base my buying decisions on his reviews or I'd never buy anything.

If you truly enjoy a game then who cares what reviewers said? Reminds me of the old classic "If this is to be wrong, I don't wanna be right.".

Personally I dislike "all of the above" except for Mirror's Edge, which I wanna try once it comes to PC but might not consider paying 50 bucks for... But what does that matter to you? I can argue all the way to hell and back that EVE is quite possibly one the most atrocious pieces of software ever made, but if you LIKE the game, what does that mean to you?

We can judge if a game does certain things effectively (good acting, good controls, good story, etc) but if you like the game, in all it's glamor or atrocities, all the reviews mean nothing.

Ahh. The joys of an opinion-based society. Just play what you like, yo. If someone doesn't like it, that's their thing. If you think it's worth the time and money, then it is.
