Does it ever upset you that the technologies portrayed will probably never exist. Three years ago after watching Avatar I was quite upset that I was confined to this planet when there are probably so many lush, unspoiled planets out there.

It happened again in Star Trek and Just recently in Deus Ex HR. I want better Eyes damn it. Every time I see a portrayal of a potential future it makes me sad because its probably never going to happen and even if it does I will probably be dead by that time. Damn mortality.

No, man, we've got the best planet. If you like 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, 1% Other, 1G, a magnetic sphere, liquid water, and the sort of amino acids your body can use, this is the place to live.

No. Well, maybe. Sometimes. It depends on what the tech is exactly. But sometimes the point of a sci-fi story is that too much tech is bad, in which case you can't really feel sorry for missing out on the bling machinery.

And another thing

There is only one Avatar. And he (or she) commands the four elements.

Uhh no, not really because there's always some catch when it comes to sci-fi technology.

Plus, there are many beautiful places here on good ol' Holy Terra, you probably just haven't seen them.

Also...

Well, yes for different reasons.
Fallout makes me sad because it is so grim and depressing. I enjoyed it a lot, but the post-apocalyptic setting gave me some chills.

I feel sad because fiction like Star Trek - The Next Generation makes me feel that we live in such a barbaric world, which could be much better. Humans are still so primitive, but there's hope for us!

Give it some time we'll get there eventually. Tech and science are advancing at ridiculous levels so we can't be too far off. A lot of the problems that are slowing us down are ridiculous morality issues.

I'd want the tech, but only if I was the only one... so I can flaunt it in style!

To be honest though, I quite like the age we are in... all these techs that are coming out are so cool and new, even though better stuff is in sci-fi...

I remeber years ago hearing about the new Blackberry phones, and hearing that different jobs could use it for different things... so a referee could use it to book people, and even hold it up as a red/yellow card... and then a office worker could use it to email...

I didn't understand... I thought it was going to be a different phone per job, but I was old enough to know that was a crap business strategy, and would be expensive... fast forward to today and we have the goddamn app store... we can convert our hand held devices to do whatever we want... and we can change that from anywhere, anytime (well... as long as you have 3G or WiFi.) That is so f-ing damn cool!!!

Not really, I just think that some things would be cool to have (augments, starships etc) but it doesn't depress me at all, mostly due to the 'Fiction' part of Science-Fiction.

Ah! But you're forgetting that many of the now-ubiquitous pieces of technology that we have today used to be part of Science-Fiction. Yes, there's "Fiction' in that hyphenated title, but there's also "Science"!

But, to be more on topic, yes, a little. But mainly because I'd rather be an alien than a human. Take the Turians from Mass Effect, or the Sangheili (Elites) from Halo! I want to be one of those!

Of course, the space travel, energy weapons, advanced technology, and the chance to have robotic limbs are all pretty cool too. But mostly the aliens.

It may be 'fiction' today but tomorrow it could very well be 'science.'

Of course it would be nice if we'd have some stuff that we see in movies and games but I am doing just fine with what I've got.

Google are bringing out virtual reality glasses later this year. Computing is still undergoing an exponential rise in power & drop in price, meaning in about 10 years computers will be so cheap that the majority of us will be able to just buy them & throw them away. We'll also have incredibly fast human genome sequencing, as that is also exponentially increasing in how fast and cheap you can do it.

But yeah, sometimes they still make me feel sad. It's just worth remembering that we live in a very exciting time.
