Do you dislike Microsoft?

On the internet, there seems to be a fair amount of dislike for Microsoft, not specifically on this site, but on lots of other sites, people seem to have a problem with the company, where gaming and xbox is concerned.

Personally, I think that Microsoft does a really good job, the console itself is fantastic, and the Xbox Live service itself works really well. Online play is smooth, the marketplace works fantastically, they support lots of other avenues, like Facebook, Netflix, and the indie games section is especially cool for smaller time developers who want to get their games on Xbox.

The main thing I see though, is while people mention the bad things that they do, they never seem to mention the good things. The deals of the week tend to be good, i know i've purchased many games or add ons through that, and while they charge for the ability to play online with others, it's not exactly an unfair price. And

Just wondering what peoples opinions are on Microsoft, are they the giant money grabbing conglomerate many make them out to be, or do you think that all the criticism is undeserved?

First off, welcome to the Escapist! Or rather, congrats on joining the community.

Secondly, I feel it moreover has to do with people being silly about how much better macs are and how they express individualistic nature and artistic merit etc...

Macs don't like Microsoft, and Microsofts don't like Macs, fanboyism is all this boils down to.

Didn't used to. Now I do.

I can't even fucking message people as a "Free" XBL member. And EVERYTHING requires Gold.

At least Sony doesn't make all of it's discounts and sales PS Plus only. And invent it's own silly currency. Sony's weekly main sale is available to everyone. Imagine is Steam had a "premium" service required to access it's sales?

WHY THE FUCK DOES NETFLIX REQUIRE GOLD?

inb4atleastMSdoesntgethacked

I was going to go back to Xbox Live Gold again...but now, after seeing exactly how little respect they show non-Gold members...Fuck 'em.

But, they're in it for the money...like every other business...So, I can't bash 'em too much.

And as for the non-gaming side of their business, I quite like them.

I don't HATE Microsoft. It does half the things computers use (not just computers, mind you), that is why is so easily criticized.

It is a good company, just not the BEST of them all.

I don't own a 360, so my opinion isn't influenced by that. I still use Windows XP, and I can say I don't think I could ever go to anything else since I'm so used to it.

They're good. On a scale of 1 to 10, they're a 7.

I have no problem with Microsoft except for the fact that I can't use netflixs on my 360 without a gold subscription

1. Windows is BEYOND bloated. It needs to go on a crash diet. The only reason I'm using it is DirectX, if Linux natively supported it I would be on Ubuntu by now.
2: The xBox 360 is an unreliable piece of shit. This is why I haven't bought one. Good library, if it works it's fun, but the damn things need their warranty far too much for me to think any higher of them. The best warranty in the world is the one you never need to use, and I dare you to come up with any logic saying otherwise.
3: XBL is a paid service. Why the fuck should I pay to play online when I can do so for free on the other two platforms?!
4: They skullfuck free DLC. They pick through game-fixing patches making sure there's nothing that could be considered DLC. They FORCE devs to charge for DLC. Just ask any 360 TF2 player who's seen the PC and PS3 versions what that's like...
5: Internet Explorer is the shittiest browser available today. It follows maybe half of the standards other browsers follow, it's laggy, it's bloated, it doesn't have an ad blocker, and it's generally blah.

There's five good reasons I want to give them some smacks upside the head.
your reasoning is vary flawed,LIVE works pretty damn well as far as console online goes, and they don't flat out force anyone to do anything, that is the devs them selves picking through the games to drain more cash, mostly just EA in fact. ,but if you wish to continue your flawed thoughts be my guest i'll just go back yo enjoying my free hulu plus while you are busy killing your elf complaining like an idiot.

Microsoft has been abusing their desktop operating system monopoly for many many years now.
That and unlikable people like Steve Balmer are the main reason Microsoft gets so much hate.

Another reason is that they always play it safe and rarely drive innovation. What was the last innovation started by Microsoft?

Umm...the only reason the TF2 stuff never made it to Xbox is because MS wanted to charge for it.

If you think there is dislike for Microsoft now then you should of been on the internet in the nineties. They just come across as being a bit unfashionable yet trying to hard to appear up to date now. Like, a well off middle aged man who buys a sports car. Maybe.

yeah this kinda sums it up. I personally think microsoft is a better gaming and internet browsing system while Mac is a better developer system (when you actually find developement programs desgined for it)

All that aside, I think the whole hate for microsoft stems from the fact that its a corporation, plain and simple.

I dissaprove of some of the thigns microsoft has done, but not nearly as much as some other companies *awkward stare at sony*

My international corporation is better than your international corporation!

OT: No, I use Windows, I play on an Xbox. Can't complain really, And i'm sure they do a fair bit for charity.

Kinect? Always seemed a big risk for me, and some good stuff is coming from the tech.

The thing is, that Microsoft would have never ever done Kinect, if Nintendo hadn't started the whole motion control thing.
