This thread specifically applies to shooters (it might apply to other genres, but I don't see how it could), so if the title confuses you, I am sorry. I couldn't really think of anything better =|

Whenever I play MW2 or Reach, I expect players on my team to fill a bare minimum list of requirements.
For MW2, its usually:
- Have headphones
- Be able to move through an area and make sure no enemies slip by
- Play to win, not to improve your k/d

Of course, I am always proven stupid and gullible for expecting such incredible feats from the average player that gets thrown on my team.
This is especially frustrating for Search & Destroy (the game mode that I, and most MW2 players, play all the time) where you have 1 life each, and the winning team is the team that can plant the bomb successfully, defuse the bomb, or eliminate the other team, 4 times.
I've lost track of how many times I have been watching a team mate of mine run around, completely oblivious to the enemies closing in on him, because he cannot hear their footsteps, because he doesn't have headphones...
Its irritating getting flanked by enemies that slip past my team mates, but it happens. Hell, I'm not perfect.
Its annoying when you play with guys that just care about killing everything that moves, but they rarely lose the game for everyone.
But the guys that die because they can't hear CLOMP CLOMP CLOMP CLOMP behind them... ugh... its maddening!

So fellow Escapists, do you expect other players (with or against you) to be able to do certain things?

Not really. People are people.

Just don't team-kill, and I'm happy.
Yeah, thats one of the big ones that I know everyone can agree with.
I'm curious if there are more like this.

Take the game with a touch of seriousness. I want to have fun but when a player on my team is shooting me in the back or killing me if I pick up the sniper rifle (looking at you Halo) I don't have fun. Its cool to screw around until you start affecting the enjoyment of others then your just a cockhat.

No quitting. I hate it when I'm playing Reach and its suddenly my buddy and I against six other guys because my whole team quit. It's also no fun when it's six of my team against one of them.

Also no glitch spots. Cheap camping spots I can live with, but when they are in some kind of impossible-to-get-to area I can't stand it.
Thats one thing I wish Reach mimic'd from MW2; mid-game joins.
Its so fucking stupid when a party of 4 guys gets kicked for being douchebags in a big team slayer, and then its suddenly 8 vs 4... That isn't fun for anyone =/
I don't play many games that have glitch spots, but yeah... Unfair advantages like that aren't fun for anyone

Not entirely serious, maybe.

It depends on the game, and how big the game is. If it's a typical game of Reach, for example, with 5+ players on each time, I really don't see much difference whether or not a team is communicating, and not many people communicate anyway. Besides, I never use my mic unless I'm playing with friends in a party.

On TF2 though, I'll use my mic to give regular updates to my team since teamwork and coordination are very important.

On smaller games, such as a coop session of Uncharted 2 or F*cking Run/Contractions in FEAR 3, I'll use my mic. I think the less players there are in a game, the more important everyone's coordination is, and the more likely that those players will listen.
Even if the players in these gametypes aren't using mics, they usually still listen. I've ran into a few players that even without mics, are still very eager to listen and are willing to help out whenever I ask them to.
I usually play Uncharted 2 with a friend, so there's usually a third stranger who gets paired with us. Sometimes it's some unresponsive twit that has no sense of survival and keeps getting himself killed.
Sometimes it's a fairly skilled person, with no concept of teamwork and doesn't listen and stick with us and runs off on his own frequently (A recipe for disaster in this game).
And sometimes, we'll get someone who listens to us and comes to help us when we ask him to, and reacts when I alert him that a guy with an RPG is about to destroy him and gets his ass out of there.

In competitive games, I just want my team to play together (none of this 3 snipers, 4 spies bullshit) and play to win. And not grief.

When playing TF2
don't pick a class we got 5 other people off, a team off 5 snipers and 5 spies isn't going to win a lot.
know what your class is for as in don't try sniping with a minigun.
support your teammates and focus on the objective, getting kills is all well and dandy sure but it isn't going to help if the objective is pushing a cart.

1. Contribute - even if you are a novice there will be something you can do which will be useful.
2. Don't team kill or team damage.
3. Don't do stupid things, like don't run in front of me when Im clearly engagded in a fire fight, or don't run into that doorway im just about to throw a grenade through.
4. Don't just sit there - especially important in the games I play, there is an objective to do and sitting there aint helping.
5. don't block doorways or chokepoints.

I have very simple standards for co-op multiplayer... they have to comprehend the objectives of the team, try to achieve those objectives, and listen to constructive criticism... all rare feats on the internet. So generally they have to be people I know.

I have pretty much one rule i'd love if everyone else I game with would follow: Be nice.

The sorts of things that encompasses are:

- Not calling other people names or harrassing them.

- When someone is clearly new politely give them tips on how to improve. ("Hey if you go over there and click that you get a buff", "Stay with us and we'll take them out as a team")

- When you win just be nice about it, a simple "gg" generally suffices.

- Etc. (Because it's too hot and I can't concentrate enough to come up with anything else)

When playing any online game I expect the other players to:

- have my back whenever possible. If I'm being gunned down and an ally CAN respond to help, it would be REALLY nice if they could.

- Know what they're doing. They don't need to be pro, and I'm fine with them being newbs. But they should at least be able to pull a good chunk of their own weight.

- Not be a douche. I hate douches on my team.

- Not be a whiner. I hate whiners. They distract me.

That's pretty much it. Basically, as long as you're not running into enemy fire constantly with your chainsaw every freakin respawn and are being considerate of your teammates, I will like you.

Even UK has hellish weather eh? lol. I am nice and comfy in my undeveloped basement. Its hot here even in Canada =/

Some people like being able to smack talk and take smack talk. I'm not one of them, but I know a few who are.

Don't be cheap
Don't be an ass

That's all you can hope for.
In most games I manage just fine without a team, I'm 'that guy' that gets shit done and sure as shit doesn't need your help doing it.

1). Don't team kill.
- This includes don't partially maim team members.

2). Don't get in the way.
- Don't be a dick and block your team mates shots or steal their kills for the k/ds.

3). Be a team player
- Heal your buddy if you're a medic, don't intentionally get yourself killed, etc.

So pretty much don't be a asshole.

* Don't team-kill (intentionally anyway, I'm pretty laid back with accidental friendly fire) or grief, at all
* Don't go AFK for a prolonged amount of time. I can handle toilet breaks, but if you're leaving your Xbox on while you're at school then we have a problem.
* Don't try to talk to me because I don't like your voice and I don't want to talk back. Sorry, I just prefer non-verbal communication.

That's it though. They can be amazing or terrible, and I'm not too bothered.

Nazi Zombies: Be co-operative, work together, don't hog the random box, divide door purchase between who has the most points, be tolerant of less skilled players and help them improve, don't dick about for years when I'm dead, try to save each other but not at the risk of losing the game. I know, my standards are too high.

Honestly in deathmatch setups (SWAT or Living Dead in Reach for example), I don't care about the other guys. At least if they're not being total asshats and getting in my way when I'm trying to snipe.

INVASION (caps for INTENSITY), however, is different. I go in with one guy who I normally know before hand and hope to all Hell he isn't a whiney emo b**** when things go wrong. Most of the time, when Murphy's Law gets proven (again) though they whine. Then suddenly I hate spending time with them because they carry the whining over into everything.

Basically, I want people to take it seriously, not whine and complain if something doesn't work, and generally quit bickering amongst each other to do the job at hand: be it arming a bomb, surviving Firefight, capturing a flag, or defending a Hill.
