Do You Like Anime? Write for The Escapist!

International and overseas shipping is a pain in the neck, and frankly more trouble than it's worth - and that's ignoring format differences, as the DVDs that we're sent are all NTSC, and we don't really want to require anyone to buy special hardware just to do a volunteer position.

While ignoring the shipping problem, I think you'd find most people would gladly buy special equipment to work for the escapist. Also, I believe the PS3 is an open platform?

Will the reviews we send in be answered, or are there simply too many for that? As I live outside of US (in the cold north of Norway infact), I don't meet the requirements for this competition. But I would love to send in something just too see how well I am doing, and what the biggest flaws with my review is. Basicly just to see what I have to work with

Understandable, however I have been close with companies such as Manga Entertainment, ADV Films, MVM and Bandai over here in the UK for a number of years and in the past would be mailed DVDs to screen to clubs, conventions or to review. All these were non-profitable jobs that I did just because I'm a fan and kept me happy and others happy too.

It's nice you want to get hold of the DVDs for reviewers but perhaps it's possible for them to get hold of discs themselves?

I'd also like to add would be nice to have an international's perspective.

London MCM Expo, Midlands MCM Expo, Amecon, Ayacon, Alcon, Minamicon... I could go on! Minamicon is one of the oldest running anime based conventions here in the UK.

WHY!? Okay I understand why you would only want people from America since it is easier and cheaper, but you gave me so much hope... Seriously, that bit could have been included a fair bit earlier, rather than a sucker punch to squander all raised hopes

It's just a shame we're both resident of the United Kingdom.

(I'd get into anime and mangas more, but finding hard copies of things (books, dvds), is such a pain in the but, oh and its expensive too! (luckily there's the internet!))

I'd be surprised if I went to a country that didn't have people who knew it.
Once again, don't want to diss the Escapist, but that's just my opinion.

I think it has more to do with the fact the shipping costs out of country might be a bit much for them to want to do on a weekly basis for a very short review. When you sit down and consider that the viewer base spends no money to read these articles and that writing takes a very solid grasp of a language (granted I'm sure about 99% of the brits here would love to point out that the language in question is "english") than you can understand their desires.

My piece would have to be about Death Note though, my favorite manga...and something that does not translate very well to an anime.

Odd. Despite the manga origins I thought it made an excellent anime. Heck, even the over the top performances in the english dubbings aren't all that bad. I mean there's eating a potato chip, and eating a potato chip epically. I wouldn't think that was possible until Death Note.

Ah, but here's the thing. The main "awesomeness," for lack of a better work, in Death Note was the psychological battle between Kira and L. In the manga, this can be well illustrated and still keep the interest of the reader because of how it is written. In an anime however, the essence of greatness present in written form isn't there at all. The "battle" so to speak is lackluster and seems less intense than it was meant to be. Death Note is about [arguably] the two most intelligent people in the world going against one another in the ultimate test of wits, which is debatable as to whether or not it translate well in the transition from page to screen.

I've a question though, I understand that intercontinental shipping is a pain but really, why exactly is Canada not included? I mean there are tons and tons of delivery and mailing services especially for US- Canada and vice versa. Why not use some of those? It's not really that inconvinient.

Every contest, job offering, trial etc. Each and every time, they wait for the end to tell us that the majority of us can't apply. We get sent NTSC stuff, so it wouldn't work in PAL territories - and also, shipping things overseas and internationally is a headache and a half. Apologies to all of our readers outside the US, but it's just not feasible

Unless you're sending people VHS tapes, I fail to see how it being NTSC has any bearing here.
I've been watching region 1 DVDs on my PAL television for nine and a half years.

Does anyone really have a DVD player that isn't region free in this, the Lord's year, 2010?

And shipping things internationally forces you to add the name of the country at the bottom of the address, and fork over another $5 for postage. Terrifying, I know!
But you already know that, I suspect, since you already send games to a Mr Croshaw, living as far away from the US as one can reasonably get, barring travel into the outer stratosphere. So apparently it's feasible if you're cool enough.

The video team's arrangement with Yahtzee is their own, though physically sending him games would be incredibly inefficient. We've had troubles with international and overseas shipping in the past; it's simply more trouble than it's worth.

It's not going to happen. I'm sorry, but it's just not in the cards right now.

I do have a love for anime, but writing articles/essays/anything has never really been my strong suit. Oh, and I'm not American, that might be a little bit of a problem too.
