I got into Dungeons & Dragons earlier this year, and though I still haven't learned most of the basics, I'm finally starting to find people who would play with me and was wondering what you guys thought of this hobby.

Are there any other great table-top Role-Playing Games like DnD, Pathfinder, etc.... that my friends and I might enjoy that you play?

No! Hahahaha! You stupid nerds! Dungeons and Dragons is for nerds!

Also, no one will play with me because I have to get up so early for work. =(

I used to play it a lot, however as of late I haven't really played at all mostly due to the fact that the people who I normally play with are now going to different colleges and universities so we don't see much of each other. Its a lot of fun, but I find you have to find a nice balence of goofy, light hearted, and serious role playing.

haven't touched pen/paper RPGs in a decade but at the time our group mostly stuck to WhiteWolf's World of Darkness...especially Mage, which had the best magic system ever.

my last experience with d&d was ad&d 2nd ed, which was a lot of fun but would always spiral out of control due to power creep.

Nope. In spite of playing several CRPG's based on the rules (Icewind Dale, Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights) and in spite of owning the core rule books for 3.5 (along with dice, etc) I've never played the game. I also have the rule books for several other pen and paper games that interested me (Shadowrun, Heavy Gear, D20 Modern, Vampire the Masquerade and probably a few others) but I've never played any of them either.

In fact, I've never really played a pen and paper game. None of my close friends ever wanted to give it a try and any time I found people who did play they either were too deep in a campaign to have a noob join or they weren't the sort of people I felt I would be able to tolerate seeing regularly.

P&P RPGs can be great fun, especially with friends (but then everything is fun with friends, eh?).
Played 3.5 for a while, then switched to DSA (The Black Eye in English, I guess. Is it even known in the English realm, though?) which has a less random rolling system and offers noticeably more roleplaying options.

I live in a small town in a small country... My experience reflects that. But I think I never could get as much into it as I would want to in terms of imagination. I have a good imagination, but not in a RPG term. Can't get in the feeling. Would like to try though...

I know 2 people I might be able to sucker into playing, but everybody else I know would either be too busy or have absolutely no interest whatsoever.

A pity, really. I've been wanting to try it for awhile.

No. I want to try, though. From what I've heard, it sounds fun. So I feel left out whenever people talk of D&D. Unfortunately, I have no-one to play it with.

I'm in a small town where sports are the preferred way of spending your free time. DnD was never a part of my childhood and it is hard to find adults into it here too :/

Do I want to try it? Yes I do. Will I? Probably not for a long time.

I'd have liked to, but I've never known anyone who does. Growing up in the country, you don't meet a lot of people who are into that sort of thing. Didn't see it any in college either, which is a lot more odd since I roomed with a number of people who should have been into it. But I guess they could have said the same of me.

I was able to play it once for a couple of highly entertaining hours, and I really want to play again. But, I can't find anyone that plays (or would be willing to try it out) that I could stand being with on a regular basis.

I've never played D&D. Ever.

I did play Baldur's Gate though, which used D&D stuffs quite a bit. That's the closest i've ever gotten.

I used to as a kid (my brother had the boardgame) but not anymore. I would like to play it though if I can find the right people to play with.

No. From 8-10th Grade me and a couple of pals of mine would randomly play "Unforgotten Realms", but that's over with.

Warning a long post with no TL;DR version!

Well, Pathfinder is D&D. Sort of. There are different editions of D&D as well which provide different experiences, for example 3.X [footnote]Which stands for version three-point-anything - there are 3.0; the 3.5 (revised, slightly tweaked rules, still compatible with 3.0) which are more popular; and Pathfinder is considered 3.75 (as in halfway between 3.5 and 4). Pathfinder might or might not be included when discussing 3.X but overall it is when speaking of the third edition in general.[/footnote] and 4e are the latest and most popular. I'm assuming, you've played 3.X but I'd suggest to try both of them and see which one your group finds better [footnote]Suggesting or giving recommendation about either edition is a quick and easy way to incite a flame war. You have been warned.[/footnote]

There are lots and lots of other role playing games and systems out there. D&D is probably the most popular one and you might find that it inspired a lot of other games. Depending on what you enjoy, however, you might be into another sort of game. For example there is the World of Darkness by White Wolf - that has not much in common with D&D setting-wise. The WoD is modern day urban fantasy and horror setting, it is split onto several game lines which offer you the choice to play as a different type of supernatural creatures: Vampire, Werewolf and Mage speak for themselves and seem to be the most popular. If you have ever played Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - that is set in the World of Darkness (as is VtM: redemption), aside from being a great game.

Another popular RPG is Shadowrun, which is set in the future and might be described as "cyberpunk D&D". Well, not correctly, but it gets the message across - it's a cyberpunk setting with trolls, gnomes, elves, magic, alongside hackers and cyborgs. It's pretty fun if you're into it.

What I think you might like, is the Warhammer RPGs - that is the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, which is really close to D&D, and Dark Heresy/Rogue Trader/Deathwatch, which are set in the Warhammer 40k universe. Dark Heresy in particular is my current favourite system overall which - I love both the fluff and the mechanics. Anyway, in DH you will play as agents of the Inquisition - take that information and the title and you can guess what will you be doing, in Deathwatch you play as a Space Marine, while in Rogue Trader, well, you play nothing really that important (compared to the other two) but it's still a very good game.

I think I have to mention Deadlands. I can only give you initioal description, though - it's a...well, a post-apocalyptic wild west horror. With some steampunk elements. You better go and have a look for yourself.

There are a few other systems worth mentioning, such as FATE, GURPS, Savage Worlds and Mutants and Masterminds but they don't tend to be tied to a specific setting, more of a "we give you the tools, you use them for whatever you want" type of systems. GURPS in particular is amazingly flexible and versatile. It is also one of my favourites but not only on that account - there are lots of supplements that can help you make a game in the modern day, set it in the future, add magic or super technology and in general, you can use it to recreate D&D or any other game. Also, there is FATE - if you've read the Dresden Files, there is an RPG that uses the FATE system, and it's rather good. Even if you haven't read it, it's worth taking a look.

Honourable mentions:
Ninja Burger - another favourite system of mine. The game is mighty fun about ninjas in the fast food industry. I prefer the first edition of the game, although it's tailored for quick one off games [footnote]The book is not much more than 40 pages, you need less than half of them to start playing. Assuming one person has read the book (not cover to cover - just going through the important parts once, works) you can start a game with total newbies in less than 15 minutes. That includes character creation and explaining the important stuff.[/footnote]. The second edition is for longer running campaigns, though. General premise of the game: you are a ninja tasked with delivering fast food - "guaranteed delivery in 30 minutes or less - anyone, anytime, anywhere, or we commit seppuku".
Kobolds Ate My Baby! - from the same guys that made Ninja Burger. It's only for short games but it's totally hilarious.
Eclipse phase - I haven't been able to look into it but it sounds rather good. A sci-fi horror game featuring transhumanists.
Paranoia - another sci-fi game set in a dystopian future. Also a humorous one. You will generally be fighting communists. Or mutants. Or commie mutants. Or not. Whatever the case, remember that the computer is you friend. Just trust Friend Computer and you'd be fine.

But there are countless other systems out there. You will find that most the famous titles from other mediums have an RPG based on the, such as Star Wars, Warcraft, Firefly, the Dresden Files (mentioned above). Probably anything you're into has an RPG, if not an official one, then somebody made an unofficial. If not, you can even make one yourself.

EDIT:
Well, shoo, Melanie McGreevey - I wanted to include RIFTS up there, too, but I forgot. Well, erm, RIFTS...just look it up, I can't think of a concise way to explain what it's about.

Yeah I play pathfinder relatively regularly. If you're looking for more weekend consuming board games, check out "twilight imperium" It's a space turn based strategy/ role playing game. Really detailed and an awful lot of fun.
