As a long-time lurker of the escapist forums I noticed that games such as the Fifa's of the world barely ever get mentioned. Being a sports-game enthusiast I just want to find out if Escapist's are actually playing the NBA 2k's and the Madden's or just ignoring the sport's genre completely...... and what reasons do people stay away from sport's games.

you play games to play games.
you play sports to play sports.
you can kind of see the connection, it's fun and friedly and shit, but you will never develop good controlls for a football game for example. never, fucking, ever, and if anyone can prove me wrong i will masturbate a knife for 30 seconds. since it just won't work for ONE guy controlling like TWELVE or what it is!
it's pretty much up to: pay 60 bucks for a game with worthless controll and overpriced price, or play it for real for like what, 5 bucks for a ball? maybe i am a bad exaple of this, but you don't use a computer to run with... also, I FUCKING HATE SPORTS!
btw, your account is 1 day old, wut about that.

Nope. Just can't stay interested in them. I can enjoy the occasional game of Madden or NHL, but that's not worth the price of the game. I don't know how people can put hundreds of hours into those games.

Nope, bad controls, repedative gameplay, even less originality than Call of Duty.
And a COMPLETE lack of interest.

Well I tried them all as an overenthusiastic wee lad in the year 2000 and I tried some new ones at a mates house (he just buys anything new), and I haveto say I've seen more of a difference in HD remakes of games.

So the bottom line buy one of them and you are good for life.

I play the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater from time to time. That's the closest I get. Maybe I'll play the occasional racing game my dad owns, but I never play "traditional" sports games.

Nah.

Nothing against them, I just never saw the point.

I can kick a soccer ball around a field with my friends in the real world. I'd even get some exercise and social contact in the bargain. However, I can't explore the ruined halls of Rapture outside of a video game.

I pick up Tiger Woods every now and again, but I play golf IRL as well.

Team sports games I've always found boring unless you have a bunch of mates around anyway, but it inevitably leads to real life (drunken) versions anyway.

HELL YES I AM. I'm more of a NCAA Football Enthusiast, but I have started playing FIFA lately. I also play NBA 2k11 and MLB 2k11, but I only play them for their my player modes for the most part.

For NCAA Football though, I could not count the number of dynasty seasons I have played, dynasty mode is just addicting to me because you have to recruit every year if you want to stay on top. One or two bad recruiting years can kill your school for a few seasons.

Edit: Before anyone asks, yes I do play sports irl with friends. Also sports games let me live out fantasies I cannot do in real life, like lead a team to a national championship. These games do the same thing for me that RPGs do, just these games are based more in reality.

Long time lurker, only joined recently. However the bigger question is what magical country do you live in which allows you to purchase games for $60. Us primitive Australians have been known to dwell in our habitat and pay up to $120 for games.

Hi-5 to you fellow sports game player. Couldn't have put it better myself, I can't manage Arsenal in real life (AND MAKE THEM DECENT), I can however through FIFA.

Sweden. all games are pretty damn cheap here. a ps3 is about 250-300$, but if you want cheap games, go to japan, really.

If you live in America, I'm guessing you can go to Cleveland for that last thing.

I use to love playing them, but now I don't. I still bring up the occasional NFL Blitz or NBA Jam, but that's not traditional sports. Those aren't real sports though; they are punching games with a score board.

I've tried several times in the last twenty years to get into sports games. The only one that has gripped me recently is Football Manager and that simulates you being a boss, rather than playing - and so it is more about spreadsheets than sport. I used to play golf games prior to celebrity endorsements, but that was a long time ago - and I did play Brian Lara cricket on the PS1 - but lost interest when I could score over 700 runs in an innings with little trouble.

For me I don't think the reason I don't play these games is that I can do these things in real life instead. I generally have little interest in sports and have not found the virtue in team exercise or competition on the field of play. I suspect this lack of interest in real life sports means I have no aspirations to lead my favourite team or dreams about competing at a senior level for my country. I have no sports fantasies that are fulfilled by playing them through as a game.

Have owned every FIFA game since FIFA 06. FiFA is my break game. Whenever I only have 30 mins or so to have a quick gaming session, I always shove in fifa. Also a fun game to play with my dad or brothers.
