Do you start off slowly or do you dive right in?

It's summer. There is a lake. The water is freezing. Do you walk in slowly to get used to the water until you're up to your neck? Or do you sprint into it with reckless abandon, getting completely immersed as soon as possible?

I used to walk slowly in because of a story a kid told me at swimming lessons. He told me that diving into cold water instead of walking slowly in gave people heart attacks. I was scared to do it for years until I grew mature enough to realize how stupid that was. So now I dive right in and I enjoy the shock from the temperature change.

Well, that's the thread. What do you do?

OT, I do the whole "Fuck it I'm jumping in" thing, but I always do it while at my peak of physical fitness, I wouldn't jump in after eating, fuck no.

I usually ease into the water unless I've been drinking......and if I've been drinking I stay away from the deeper parts.

Is it wrong that I came into this thread thinking something completely different?

Came.
If that's wrong then I don't think I'm right.

The shock of cold water compared to hot weather made me want to take it slow as a kid but I learned in time to just jump in. As soon as your head goes under you're perfectly fine. Slowly working your way in just reminds you how cold the water is. It makes it really uncomfortable, walking slowly into the water.

I either dive right in, or fuck off home. I'm rarely affected by cold, but if you go in slowly you're just prolonging the pain.

It can do that, I indirectly know people who've died from that.

But that still doesn't stop me jumping in. Life is too short to worry about these things.

I walk straight out/jump right into/however you want to get into the water. No waiting for me there isn't. Heck, this summer I went for a swim in the 8-10°C water far up in the north when I visited some friends in Norway. Damn that was cold, but since it was sunny and warm and all it was just as well that it was so cold. Felt good. ^^

I always thought it was a myth or something. At any rate, I've still lived to tell the tale after I'd jumped in the pool with a fully bully.

OT: I always go into water until it's up to my knees. At which point, I just take a deep breath and plunge right in.

I'm the person that wades around in the shallow end of the pool trying to "wait until he adjusts" with his arms wrapped around himself, while everyone else is already swimming.

Usually go up to my knees then go for the plunge. Or dive right in if I need to impress someone or am feeling manly... grrr!

Off topic: I definitely thought this thread would be about something different.

I just jump on in and worry about the rest as I'm freezing my ass off under water.

Going in slowly is like slowly tearing a band-aid off, it's better to rip that ***** right off then endure constant suffering from it.

Normally, I test the water and then sprint in before my body realises what an idiot my mind is.

I find jumping right in tends to get you used to the water much quicker than just paddling around like an idiot and splashing yourself a bit. Also makes you look like a badass!
