Do you think that the Mass Effect series has lost it's 'touch'?

Personally, I don't think so; I enjoyed Mass Effect 1 & 2, and I am looking forward to ME3, but there has been a lot of buzz about how Mass Effect has lost it's RPG roots. Personally, Mass Effect I was a bit dreary and deep(in a good way!), and Mass Effect II has taken some of that depth away, but RPG elements were nver 'crucial' to me in an RPG, and if EA want it to be a hybrid, I say 'Why not?'.

Basically, what I'm trying to ask people on the escapist is why all the cynicism towards Mass Effect losing it's RPG elements?

EDIT: and has it lost it's touch?

Nope.

Mass effect 3 is not released yet, is it?

And for the record RPG means ROLE PLAYING GAME, mass effect is an RPG. I challenge anyone out their otherwise.

Some people think that things like inventory management and stat grinding are critical parts of the RPG experience. When Mass Effect 2 was streamlined, they stripped out to many of these elements for a more simple approach and dumbed the game down as a result.

I personally disagree, because the only thing I think was lost in the transition between Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 was extraneous garbage. Pretty much all of the weapons in the game functioned the same. The only difference between one assault rifle and another was statistics that only change things behind the scenes. All you ended up doing was swapping out one weapon for the better version as soon as it became available. I'm glad Mass Effect 2 removed that. Weapon mods are something I wish they kept but streamlined more as well. The same can be applied to armor and all your other gear.

Seriously, micro managing the gear for an entire squad sucks horribly.

Obviously however nobody is talking about the role-playing aspect. They're talking about the elements associated with many RPGs that Mass Effect 1 embraced and then abandoned in the transition to Mass Effect 2.

Nope. ME 2 was better than the first game on every conceivable level.

I don't give a shit if I lose the ability to carry around eleventy trillion tonnes of arbitrary weapon mods.

Far from it, i played ME1 twice and ME2 6 times and i still want more Mass Effect .... what from what i have seen so far from ME3 .. and i am super excited about it as it has the best stuff from ME1 (deep customization of skills and weapons) and of ME2 (fast paced action with lots of maneuvers and moves) ^_^

Although I did like ME1, I do think that 2 was a better game. I missed a few of the RPG parts, and the Mako (in a minority there), but overall, 2 was better. And looking at the footage of 3, it's going to be even better.
All hail Bioware!

There have only been two games. I really don't think that's enough data from which to formulate a hypothesis.

I really don't feel we can accuse it of losing its touch yet because the trilogy isn't even over. I mean, Halo, CoD, long running franchises you might be able to say that about, but I don't know if you can quite yet bring that out on ME yet.

That said, I did miss the lack of RPG elements that transferred from 1 to 2, and the simplification of Gameplay. Why? Because I was an Adept, that's why. Suddenly, I am missing some of my best powers, and the ones that replace them are crippled by comparison. In the first, I remember making my Singularity so powerful that it was able to suck up entire rooms full of enemies that I could then throw into a wall across the complex the moment it ended since all were so closely bunched up. What did I have in 2 in terms of strategy or depth?

If the target is on their final red bar of health, pull upwards, wait, then throw from underneath. If they are not at health bar, either warp or shoot.

There really was very little in terms of complexity that I could pull off, and the satisfaction of it all was hampered by the ease of shooting people into orbit. Seriously, I could do it so often in ME2, that performing it became routine. In ME1 when I was able to throw someone out of a combat arena, it was much rarer, and I had to make sure I was perfectly alinged to do it. That's why Virmire became the most entertaining section of the game because the open railings and such allowed you to hurl enemies into oceans if you got it right.

So yeah, while Soldier didn't really get effected, I felt as though almost every other class was, and not in a good way. It made it so I had less to do in the face of others, and what little I could do just got endlessly repeated because I never had the chance to change my strategy to something better in a certain context or situation.

They've apparently added more RPG elements into ME:3 than both of the previous games so the "dumbed down" angle doesn't hold water for me.
(Link: http://www.examiner.com/video-game-in-national/bioware-explains-mass-effect-3-s-rpg-elements)

ME:2 was far better for some of the RPG elements being stripped away and the combat was far better. Not being able to equip whatever armour you liked on your sqaudmates really helped give them their own visual style which was lacking in ME:1.

Short answer: No.

Longer answer: Hell no.

Answer to your follow-up question: RPG fans are BY FAR the worst, most entitled, most fickle group of people on the planet. Bar none.

The only thing it lost was the ability to customize everything about their weapons/armor, although the system was incredibly flawed and time consuming in ME1 anyways. I love customization in my RPG's as well, but not the way ME1 did it. But it was a shame they just completely threw it out in ME2 instead of improving it, but we now have ME3 for that. Also, it lacks a strong main plot, but the story was about the characters anyway, so that wasn't such a huge issue to me.

I wouldn't call ME2 a huge step up or down from ME1, it's simply just a different game. And anyone who says it's lost its RPG-roots, is only taking a single variant of the word anyway. ME2 is an RPG in every sense of the word.

It seems that ME3 is taking the best of both games and mixing them into one, so no, the series has definitely not lost its touch and I can't wait to play the final game in the trilogy.

Mass Effect 2 was akin to the Subtle Knife in my opinion; that game that has a weaker story and drive and serves only to link story from A to the story of B. Only difference is, ME2 is amazing, just as good in ME1 if not better in my opinion, though in different ways. swapping out the time I wasted with weapon dicking about with dicking about scanning planets. I haven't seen anything of ME3, I don't want to spoil it for myself, but I've never been so immersed in my own character and her (I play femShep, leave me alone) story, and the connections between her and other characters. so on the ROleplaying front, no. on the traditonal aspects of RPGs, apart from afore-mentioned planet scanning, I don't miss what they cut out from ME1, it was getting in the way. All I thought could be better would be having more than 1 CD to use, instead of everything sharing one. As an infiltrator, all I used was the cloak, incinerate was left unloved.

TL;DR: Hell no, it's kept the good and beridded the bad.

It's not as though the amount of powers or abilities was cut down as well, or the ability to perform them cut down to small windows instead of being able to performed whenever you want. It's not like the story suffered in any way, and wasn't padded 80% by 'Rounding up the gang' and only 20% of it actively being stopping the enemy and doing what you had intended to do by undermining and defeating them. It's not like the massive amount of characters lead to much less depth and interaction for them individually so we were left with more hollow and short stories and arcs for each of them.

ME2 was good, but you can't just blanket it as being better that quickly. It had its problems. Some of the things that were cut were not for the better. While the tightening of the gunplay was good, the lack of selection between weapons, the chance to customize them, and the ability to use you powers and have more of them available to you in combat was also lost. I felt the story had also suffered during this time. While it was nice to see some new, more urban centres of the galaxy other then the Citadel, such as Omega, or Illium, the characters suffered I felt. While I felt that every character in the first game had been solid, well defined, and interesting (exception of course to Kaiden), I felt a lot more in the second game were just there for padding and didn't get the chance to be explored nearly with nearly as much depth as before. Jacob and Samara were probably the worst offenders, but Grunt didn't hold anything on Wrex, and Jack and Miranda each had a number of problems with them as well.

So to pretty well sum up, don't say that it's completely better then what came before it. Some of the things it lost were the most valuable. While the Mako was never that fun to drive, it at least allowed for some exploration of planets, and the ability to find side quests and stories. Do you really feel that Planet Scanning was a better replacement for that?

Of course not. They are two different games, but they're both amazing (I personally prefer the first one but hey, everyone has their own preferences)

I just have one thing to say about ME2.
Cerberus? Seriously? SERIOUSLY?? My Sole survivor Shep does not approve.

Yes, I said I enjoyed the second more than the first. Yes, boo fucking hoo. Let me save you some time and just type out what you were going to say anyway: im a Call of Duty scrub, im a noob and suck at RPG elements, I am only interested in shooting things and making things explode, and I am part of whats wrong with the gaming community. There. Now you dont have to waste your time being a complete ****. This is directed not too anyone in particular - just too the people who were just getting ready to claim superiority over me because they liked a different video game than me. Go fuck yourselfs, I have more knowledge of those old "hardcore" RPGs you love so much than you ever will have. Stop being such assholes and shut up.
That was completely unnecessary, no-one was judging you and probably neither would people have, if you read how the comments were rolling. Do you defend all your opinions in such an obscene manner?

I agree, mine was also Sole Surivor, and had this thing of massacring anyone who experimented on live humans because of it. The lack of "Go F yourself" dialogue option to The Illusive man was noted unhappily.

People really didn't ***** about this at all when Mass Effect 2... you know, actually came out. Everyone heralded it as a mass(ive) improvement on the original. This is a new fad, it seems.

It only really started when DA2 set off a bombshell. Take from that what you will.

I'd wait until I saw the third game to make that judgment. They seem to be adding some RPG stuff (weapon mods, branching abilities, etc) in from both games, and expanding that area of the content. The writing's probably going to stay great but kind of uneven, the romances are still going to be annoying and intrusive, and so on.
